Joseph’s Brothers Return with Benjamin
Now the famine was severe in the land.

And it came to pass, when they had eaten up the grain which they had brought from Egypt, that their father said to them, “Go back, buy us a little food.”
Als das Getreide, das sie aus Ägypten gebracht hatten, aufgezehrt war, sagte ihr Vater zu ihnen: Geht noch einmal hin, kauft uns etwas Brotgetreide!
But Judah spoke to him, saying, “The man solemnly warned us, saying, ‘You shall not see my face unless your brother is with you.’
Juda antwortete ihm: Der Mann hat uns ausdrücklich gewarnt: Kommt mir ja nicht mehr unter die Augen, wenn ihr nicht euren Bruder mitbringt!
If you send our brother with us, we will go down and buy you food.
Wenn du bereit bist, unseren Bruder mitzuschicken, ziehen wir hinunter und kaufen dir Brotgetreide.
But if you will not send him, we will not go down; for the man said to us, ‘You shall not see my face unless your brother is with you.’ ”
Willst du ihn aber nicht mitschicken, ziehen wir nicht hinunter. Denn der Mann hat uns gesagt: Kommt mir ja nicht mehr unter die Augen, wenn ihr nicht euren Bruder mitbringt!
Da sagte Israel: Warum habt ihr mir so etwas Schlimmes angetan, jenem Mann zu sagen, dass ihr noch einen Bruder habt?
But they said, “The man asked us pointedly about ourselves and our family, saying, ‘Is your father still alive? Have you another brother?’ And we told him according to these words. Could we possibly have known that he would say, ‘Bring your brother down’?”
Der Mann, entgegneten sie, hat sich eingehend nach uns und unserer Verwandtschaft erkundigt und gefragt: Lebt euer Vater noch, habt ihr noch einen Bruder? Wir haben ihm Auskunft gegeben, wie es wirklich ist. Konnten wir denn wissen, dass er sagen würde: Bringt euren Bruder herab!
Then Judah said to Israel his father, “Send the lad with me, and we will arise and go, that we may live and not die, both we and you and also our little ones.
Juda sagte seinem Vater Israel: Lass den Knaben mit mir ziehen! Dann können wir aufbrechen und gehen. So werden wir am Leben bleiben und nicht sterben, sowohl wir als auch du und unsere Kinder.
I myself will be surety for him; from my hand you shall require him. If I do not bring him back to you and set him before you, then let me bear the blame forever.
Ich verbürge mich für ihn; aus meiner Hand magst du ihn zurückfordern. Wenn ich ihn dir nicht zurückbringe und vor dich hinstelle, will ich alle Tage bei dir in Schuld stehen.
For if we had not lingered, surely by now we would have returned this second time.”
Ja, hätten wir nicht gezögert, könnten wir jetzt schon zum zweiten Mal zurück sein.
And their father Israel said to them, “If it must be so, then do this: Take some of the best fruits of the land in your vessels and carry down a present for the man — a little balm and a little honey, spices and myrrh, pistachio nuts and almonds.
Da sagte ihr Vater Israel zu ihnen: Wenn es schon sein muss, dann macht es so: Nehmt von den besten Erzeugnissen des Landes in eurem Gepäck mit und überbringt es dem Mann als Geschenk: etwas Mastix, etwas Honig, Tragakant und Ladanum, Pistazien und Mandeln!
Take double money in your hand, and take back in your hand the money that was returned in the mouth of your sacks; perhaps it was an oversight.
Nehmt den doppelten Geldbetrag mit! Das Geld, das sich wieder oben in euren Getreidesäcken fand, gebt mit eigenen Händen zurück! Vielleicht war es ein Versehen.
Take your brother also, and arise, go back to the man.
So nehmt denn euren Bruder mit, brecht auf und geht wieder zu dem Mann zurück!
And may God Almighty give you mercy before the man, that he may release your other brother and Benjamin. If I am bereaved, I am bereaved!”
El-Schaddai lasse euch Erbarmen bei dem Mann finden, sodass er euch den anderen Bruder und Benjamin freigibt. Ich aber, ich verliere noch alle Kinder.
So the men took that present and Benjamin, and they took double money in their hand, and arose and went down to Egypt; and they stood before Joseph.
Die Männer nahmen das Geschenk und den doppelten Geldbetrag mit und dazu auch Benjamin. Sie machten sich auf, zogen nach Ägypten hinab und traten vor Josef hin.
Als Josef bei ihnen Benjamin sah, sagte er zu seinem Hausverwalter: Führe die Männer ins Haus, schlachte ein Tier und richte es her! Denn mit mir werden die Männer zu Mittag essen.
Then the man did as Joseph ordered, and the man brought the men into Joseph’s house.
Der Mann tat, wie Josef gesagt hatte: Er führte die Männer in das Haus Josefs.
Die Männer fürchteten sich, weil sie in Josefs Haus geführt wurden, und dachten: Wegen des Geldes, das sich beim ersten Mal wieder in unseren Getreidesäcken fand, werden wir hineingeführt. Man wird sich auf uns stürzen, über uns herfallen und uns und unsere Esel zu Sklaven machen.
When they drew near to the steward of Joseph’s house, they talked with him at the door of the house,
Sie traten näher an den Hausverwalter Josefs heran und redeten mit ihm an der Haustür.
and said, “O sir, we indeed came down the first time to buy food;
Sie sagten: Bitte, Herr, schon früher sind wir einmal hierhergekommen, um Brotgetreide zu kaufen.
but it happened, when we came to the encampment, that we opened our sacks, and there, each man’s money was in the mouth of his sack, our money in full weight; so we have brought it back in our hand.
Als wir aber in die Herberge kamen und unsere Getreidesäcke öffneten, siehe, da lag das Geld eines jeden von uns oben im Sack, unser Geld in seinem vollen Gewicht. Wir bringen es mit eigenen Händen wieder zurück.
And we have brought down other money in our hands to buy food. We do not know who put our money in our sacks.”
Wir haben noch anderes Geld in unseren Händen mitgebracht, um Brotgetreide einzukaufen. Wir wissen nicht, wer das Geld in unsere Säcke gelegt hat.
But he said, “Peace be with you, do not be afraid. Your God and the God of your father has given you treasure in your sacks; I had your money.” Then he brought Simeon out to them.
Er sagte: Friede sei mit euch! Fürchtet euch nicht! Euer Gott, der Gott eures Vaters, hat euch einen Schatz in eure Säcke gelegt. Bei mir ist euer Geld eingegangen. Dann brachte er Simeon zu ihnen heraus.
So the man brought the men into Joseph’s house and gave them water, and they washed their feet; and he gave their donkeys feed.
Der Mann führte die Männer ins Haus Josefs und gab ihnen Wasser. Sie wuschen ihre Füße und er gab ihnen Futter für ihre Esel.
Then they made the present ready for Joseph’s coming at noon, for they heard that they would eat bread there.
Sie legten, bis Josef zu Mittag kam, das Geschenk zurecht; denn sie hatten gehört, dass sie dort essen sollten.
And when Joseph came home, they brought him the present which was in their hand into the house, and bowed down before him to the earth.
Als Josef ins Haus kam, überreichten sie ihm das Geschenk, das sie in ihren Händen hielten, und warfen sich vor ihm auf die Erde nieder.
Then he asked them about their well-being, and said, “Is your father well, the old man of whom you spoke? Is he still alive?”
Er erkundigte sich, wie es ihnen gehe, und fragte: Geht es eurem alten Vater gut, von dem ihr erzählt habt? Ist er noch am Leben?
And they answered, “Your servant our father is in good health; he is still alive.” And they bowed their heads down and prostrated themselves.
Sie erwiderten: Deinem Knecht, unserem Vater, geht es gut; er lebt noch. Dann verneigten sie sich und warfen sich nieder.
Then he lifted his eyes and saw his brother Benjamin, his mother’s son, and said, “Is this your younger brother of whom you spoke to me?” And he said, “God be gracious to you, my son.”
Als er seine Augen erhob und seinen Bruder Benjamin, den Sohn seiner Mutter, erblickte, fragte er: Ist das euer jüngster Bruder, von dem ihr mir erzählt habt? Und weiter sagte er: Gott sei dir gnädig, mein Sohn.
Now his heart yearned for his brother; so Joseph made haste and sought somewhere to weep. And he went into his chamber and wept there.
Dann ging Josef schnell weg, denn sein Gemüt war bewegt wegen seines Bruders. Er wollte weinen. Und so ging er in die Kammer und weinte dort.
Then he washed his face and came out; and he restrained himself, and said, “Serve the bread.”
Dann wusch er sein Gesicht, kam heraus, nahm sich zusammen und sagte: Tragt das Essen auf!
So they set him a place by himself, and them by themselves, and the Egyptians who ate with him by themselves; because the Egyptians could not eat food with the Hebrews, for that is an abomination to the Egyptians.
Man trug das Essen auf, getrennt für ihn, für sie und für die mit ihm speisenden Ägypter. Die Ägypter können nämlich nicht gemeinsam mit den Hebräern essen, weil das für die Ägypter ein Gräuel ist.
And they sat before him, the firstborn according to his birthright and the youngest according to his youth; and the men looked in astonishment at one another.
Sie saßen vor ihm entsprechend ihrem Alter, vom Erstgeborenen bis zum Jüngsten. Da blickten die Männer einander verwundert an.
Then he took servings to them from before him, but Benjamin’s serving was five times as much as any of theirs. So they drank and were merry with him.
Er ließ ihnen Gerichte vorsetzen, die vor ihm standen, was man aber Benjamin vorsetzte, übertraf das aller anderen um das Fünffache. Sie tranken mit ihm und sie wurden trunken.
