Confession of Improper Marriages

Now while Ezra was praying, and while he was confessing, weeping, and bowing down before the house of God, a very large assembly of men, women, and children gathered to him from Israel; for the people wept very bitterly.

Während Esra vor dem Tempel kniete und Gott die Schuld seines Volkes unter Tränen bekannte, sammelten sich um ihn sehr viele Männer, Frauen und Kinder aus Israel. Auch sie weinten heftig.

And Shechaniah the son of Jehiel, one of the sons of Elam, spoke up and said to Ezra, “We have trespassed[a] against our God, and have taken pagan wives from the peoples of the land; yet now there is hope in Israel in spite of this.

Schechanja, der Sohn von Jehiël, aus der Sippe Elam sagte zu Esra: »Ja, wir sind unserem Gott untreu geworden, weil wir heidnische Frauen geheiratet haben. Doch auch jetzt gibt es für Israel noch Hoffnung:

Now therefore, let us make a covenant with our God to put away all these wives and those who have been born to them, according to the advice of my master and of those who tremble at the commandment of our God; and let it be done according to the law.

Lasst uns mit unserem Gott einen Bund schließen und schwören, uns von den heidnischen Frauen und ihren Kindern zu trennen. Wir werden tun, was du und die anderen, die Ehrfurcht vor Gottes Geboten haben, uns sagen. Das Gesetz des Herrn muss befolgt werden!

Arise, for this matter is your responsibility. We also are with you. Be of good courage, and do it.”

Und nun steh auf und nimm die Angelegenheit selbst in die Hand. Wir werden dich dabei unterstützen. Sei mutig und entschlossen!«

Then Ezra arose, and made the leaders of the priests, the Levites, and all Israel swear an oath that they would do according to this word. So they swore an oath.

Da stand Esra auf. Er ließ alle führenden Männer der Priester, der Leviten und des ganzen Volkes schwören, nach Schechanjas Rat zu handeln.

Then Ezra rose up from before the house of God, and went into the chamber of Jehohanan the son of Eliashib; and when he came there, he ate no bread and drank no water, for he mourned because of the guilt of those from the captivity.

Dann verließ Esra den Platz vor dem Haus Gottes und ging in die Tempelkammer von Johanan, Eljaschibs Sohn. Dort blieb er die Nacht über, ohne etwas zu essen und zu trinken, denn er trauerte über die Sünde der Israeliten.

And they issued a proclamation throughout Judah and Jerusalem to all the descendants of the captivity, that they must gather at Jerusalem,

Auf Beschluss der Sippenoberhäupter und führenden Männer wurde in Jerusalem und in ganz Juda folgende Botschaft verbreitet: »Alle aus der Verbannung zurückgekehrten Israeliten haben sich innerhalb von drei Tagen in Jerusalem einzufinden. Wer der Aufforderung nicht folgt, wird aus der Gemeinde ausgeschlossen, und sein gesamter Besitz wird eingezogen.«

So all the men of Judah and Benjamin gathered at Jerusalem within three days. It was the ninth month, on the twentieth of the month; and all the people sat in the open square of the house of God, trembling because of this matter and because of heavy rain.

Da kamen alle Männer aus den Stämmen Juda und Benjamin vor Ablauf des dritten Tages nach Jerusalem. Es war der 20. Tag des 9. Monats. Die Versammelten saßen auf dem Tempelvorplatz. Sie hatten große Angst und zitterten vor Kälte, denn es regnete stark.

Then Ezra the priest stood up and said to them, “You have [b]transgressed and [c]have taken pagan wives, adding to the guilt of Israel.

Esra, der Priester, stand auf und sagte zu ihnen: »Ihr seid Gott untreu geworden. Ihr habt heidnische Frauen geheiratet und so noch größere Schuld auf Israel geladen.

Now therefore, make confession to the Lord God of your fathers, and do His will; separate yourselves from the peoples of the land, and from the pagan wives.”

Bekennt jetzt dem HERRN, dem Gott eurer Vorfahren, eure Sünden! Und dann tut, was er von euch erwartet: Sondert euch ab von den anderen Völkern im Land, trennt euch von euren heidnischen Frauen!«

Then all the assembly answered and said with a loud voice, “Yes! As you have said, so we must do.

Alle Versammelten riefen: »Du hast recht! Was du uns gesagt hast, müssen wir tun!

But there are many people; it is the season for heavy rain, and we are not able to stand outside. Nor is this the work of one or two days, for there are many of us who have transgressed in this matter.

Aber wir sind zu viele, außerdem ist Regenzeit. Wir können nicht im Freien bleiben. Die Angelegenheit lässt sich auch nicht in ein oder zwei Tagen regeln. Zu viele sind davon betroffen.

Please, let the leaders of our entire assembly stand; and let all those in our cities who have taken pagan wives come at appointed times, together with the elders and judges of their cities, until the fierce wrath of our God is turned away from us in this matter.”

Die Oberhäupter unseres Volkes sollen hierbleiben und die ganze Versammlung vertreten. Alle, die heidnische Frauen geheiratet haben, sollen an einem bestimmten Tag mit den führenden Männern und Richtern ihres Ortes vor ihnen erscheinen. Erst wenn wir alles in Ordnung gebracht haben, wird Gott seinen glühenden Zorn wieder von uns abwenden.«

Only Jonathan the son of Asahel and Jahaziah the son of Tikvah opposed this, and Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite gave them support.

Alle waren einverstanden, bis auf Jonatan, der Sohn von Asaël, und Jachseja, der Sohn von Tikwa. Sie wurden von Meschullam und dem Leviten Schabbetai unterstützt.

Then the descendants of the captivity did so. And Ezra the priest, with certain heads of the fathers’ households, were set apart by the fathers’ households, each of them by name; and they sat down on the first day of the tenth month to examine the matter.

Doch die Israeliten setzten ihren Beschluss in die Tat um. Der Priester Esra wählte einige Sippenoberhäupter aus, die alle Fälle untersuchen sollten, in denen jüdische Männer nichtjüdische Frauen geheiratet hatten. Am 1. Tag des 10. Monats begannen sie damit, und am 1. Tag des 1. Monats waren sie fertig.

Pagan Wives Put Away

And among the sons of the priests who had taken pagan wives the following were found of the sons of Jeshua the son of [d]Jozadak, and his brothers: Maaseiah, Eliezer, Jarib, and Gedaliah.

Es folgt ein Verzeichnis der Männer, die mit heidnischen Frauen verheiratet waren. Sie gaben ihre Hand darauf, sich von diesen Frauen zu trennen, und brachten je einen Schafbock als Schuldopfer dar. Von den Priestern: Maaseja, Eliëser, Jarib und Gedalja aus den Sippen von Jeschua, dem Sohn von Jozadak, und seinen Brüdern;

Also of the sons of Immer: Hanani and Zebadiah;

of the sons of Harim: Maaseiah, Elijah, Shemaiah, Jehiel, and Uzziah;

Maaseja, Elia, Schemaja, Jehiël und Usija aus der Sippe Harim;

of the sons of Pashhur: Elioenai, Maaseiah, Ishmael, Nethanel, Jozabad, and Elasah.

Eljoënai, Maaseja, Jismael, Netanel, Josabad und Elasa aus der Sippe Paschhur.

Also of the Levites: Jozabad, Shimei, Kelaiah (the same is Kelita), Pethahiah, Judah, and Eliezer.

Von den Leviten: Josabad, Schimi, Kelaja, den sie auch Kelita nannten, Petachja, Juda und Eliëser.

Also of the singers: Eliashib; and of the gatekeepers: Shallum, Telem, and Uri.

Von den Sängern: Eljaschib. Von den Torwächtern: Schallum, Telem und Uri.

And others of Israel: of the sons of Parosh: Ramiah, Jeziah, Malchiah, Mijamin, Eleazar, Malchijah, and Benaiah;

Von den übrigen Israeliten: Ramja, Jisija, Malkija, Mijamin, Eleasar, Malkija und Benaja aus der Sippe Parosch;

of the sons of Elam: Mattaniah, Zechariah, Jehiel, Abdi, Jeremoth, and Eliah;

Mattanja, Secharja, Jehiël, Abdi, Jeremot und Elia aus der Sippe Elam;

of the sons of Zattu: Elioenai, Eliashib, Mattaniah, Jeremoth, Zabad, and Aziza;

Eljoënai, Eljaschib, Mattanja, Jeremot, Sabad und Asisa aus der Sippe Sattu;

of the sons of Bebai: Jehohanan, Hananiah, Zabbai, and Athlai;

Johanan, Hananja, Sabbai und Atlai aus der Sippe Bebai;

of the sons of Bani: Meshullam, Malluch, Adaiah, Jashub, Sheal, and [e]Ramoth;

Meschullam, Malluch, Adaja, Jaschub, Scheal und Jeremot aus der Sippe Bani;

of the sons of Pahath-Moab: Adna, Chelal, Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattaniah, Bezalel, Binnui, and Manasseh;

Adna, Kelal, Benaja, Maaseja, Mattanja, Bezalel, Binnui und Manasse aus der Sippe Pahat-Moab;

of the sons of Harim: Eliezer, Ishijah, Malchijah, Shemaiah, Shimeon,

Eliëser, Jischija, Malkija, Schemaja, Simeon, Benjamin, Malluch und Schemarja aus der Sippe Harim;

of the sons of Hashum: Mattenai, Mattattah, Zabad, Eliphelet, Jeremai, Manasseh, and Shimei;

Mattenai, Mattatta, Sabad, Elifelet, Jeremai, Manasse und Schimi aus der Sippe Haschum;

of the sons of Bani: Maadai, Amram, Uel,

Maadai, Amram, Uël, Benaja, Bedja, Keluhi, Wanja, Meremot, Eljaschib, Mattanja, Mattenai, Jaasai aus der Sippe Bani;

Bani, Binnui, Shimei,

Schimi, Schelemja, Nathan, Adaja, Machnadbai, Schaschai, Scharai, Asarel, Schelemja, Schemarja, Schallum, Amarja und Josef aus der Sippe Binnui;

of the sons of Nebo: Jeiel, Mattithiah, Zabad, Zebina, [h]Jaddai, Joel, and Benaiah.

Jeïël, Mattitja, Sabad, Sebina, Jaddai, Joel und Benaja aus der Sippe Nebo.

All these had taken pagan wives, and some of them had wives by whom they had children.

Alle diese Männer hatten Frauen aus den anderen Völkern geheiratet. Nun trennten sie sich von ihnen und ihren Kindern.
