Eliphaz Accuses Job of Folly

Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said:

1

І відказав Елифаз із Теману й промовив:

2

“Should a wise man answer with empty knowledge,
And fill [a]himself with the east wind?

2

Хиба ж стане мудрий відповідати своїм пустим знаннєм і сповняти нутро своє вітром палючим,

3

Should he reason with unprofitable talk,
Or by speeches with which he can do no good?

3

Виправдувати себе словами марними й бесїдою, що не має нїякої сили?

4

Yes, you cast off fear,
And restrain [b]prayer before God.

4

Ти ж і ввесь страх відкинув і за малу маєш собі річ, говорити до Бога!

5

For your iniquity teaches your mouth,
And you choose the tongue of the crafty.

5

Се ж безбожність твоя настроїла так уста твої й ти вибрав язик лукавих!

6

Your own mouth condemns you, and not I;
Yes, your own lips testify against you.

Тебе усуджують власні уста твої, а не я, і твій язик говорить проти тебе.

7

“Are you the first man who was born?
Or were you made before the hills?

Хиба ти первим родивсь чоловіком і перше, нїж гори, сотворений?

8

Have you heard the counsel of God?
Do you limit wisdom to yourself?

Хиба в Бога ти в радї бував і (його) премудрість собі присвоїв?

9

What do you know that we do not know?
What do you understand that is not in us?

9

Що знаєш ти, чого б і ми не знали? Що розумієш ти, чого б і ми не розуміли?

10

Both the gray-haired and the aged are among us,
Much older than your father.

10

Е й проміж нами сїдоголові й старцї, що перейшли віком і батька твого.

11

Are the consolations of God too small for you,
And the word spoken [c]gently with you?

Хиба ж се мала річ, щоб Бог тебе потїшив? чи й сього ти не знаєш?

12

Why does your heart carry you away,
And [d]what do your eyes wink at,

12

Куди пориває тебе серце твоє, й куди так гордо спозираєш?

13

That you turn your spirit against God,
And let such words go out of your mouth?

13

Чому ти справив проти Бога дух твій і устами твоїми такі слова верзеш?

14

“What is man, that he could be pure?
And he who is born of a woman, that he could be righteous?

14

Що таке чоловік, щоб йому бути чистим, і хиба праведен той, хто вродився від жінки?

15

If God puts no trust in His saints,
And the heavens are not pure in His sight,

15

Глянь, він і сьвятим своїм не доймає віри, й самі небеса перед ним ще нечисті:

16

How much less man, who is abominable and filthy,
Who drinks iniquity like water!

16

Тимпаче ж нечиста й гидка людина, що, наче воду, пє беззаконність.

17

“I will tell you, hear me;
What I have seen I will declare,

17

Я буду говорити тобі, тільки слухай мене; я роскажу тобі те, що видав,

18

What wise men have told,
Not hiding anything received from their fathers,

18

Що чували мудрі й не затаїли чуваного від батьків своїх;

19

To whom alone the [e]land was given,
And no alien passed among them:

19

В їх одних у руках була ще вся земля, і нї один чужинець ще не вештавсь між ними:

20

The wicked man writhes with pain all his days,
And the number of years is hidden from the oppressor.

20

Поки ледачий живе, поти він і мучить себе, та й число лїт (його муки) закрите перед гнобительом;

21

[f]Dreadful sounds are in his ears;
In prosperity the destroyer comes upon him.

21

Шум страху в його в ушах, і під час спокою йде на його вбийник.

22

He does not believe that he will return from darkness,
For a sword is waiting for him.

22

Не сподївається він із темряви спастися, а всюди меч перед собою бачить.

23

He wanders about for bread, saying, ‘Where is it?’
He knows that a day of darkness is ready at his hand.

23

Блукаєсь усюди за куском хлїба; знає, що вже йому наготовлений, вже й під рукою в його день чорний.

24

Trouble and anguish make him afraid;
They overpower him, like a king ready for [g]battle.

24

Страшить його нужда, й тїснота подолїває його, наче царя перед боєм, —

25

For he stretches out his hand against God,
And acts defiantly against the Almighty,

25

За те, що простягав проти Бога він руку, й що вставав навпроти Вседержителя,

26

Running stubbornly against Him
With his strong, embossed shield.

26

Виступав проти його з гордою шиєю, поза грубими щитами своїми;

27

“Though he has covered his face with his fatness,
And made his waist heavy with fat,

27

За те, що вкрив лице собі салом своїм, а боки свої обложив жиром.

28

He dwells in desolate cities,
In houses which no one inhabits,
Which are destined to become ruins.

28

І оселиться він у містах розвалених, в господах, де вже нїхто не живе, що призначені на розвалини.

29

He will not be rich,
Nor will his wealth continue,
Nor will his possessions overspread the earth.

29

Не забагатїє він, і не вцїлїє майно його, й не розшириться по землї добуток його.

30

He will not depart from darkness;
The flame will dry out his branches,
And by the breath of His mouth he will go away.

30

Мороку він не втече; галуззє його полумє спалить, а його самого подихом уст своїх захопить.

31

Let him not trust in futile things, deceiving himself,
For futility will be his reward.

31

Оманений нехай не довіряє марнотї, бо марна буде й заплата йому.

32

It will be accomplished before his time,
And his branch will not be green.

32

Перед часом прийде конець йому, й віттє його не буде зеленїти.

33

He will shake off his unripe grape like a vine,
And cast off his blossom like an olive tree.

33

Мов виноградина та, поскидає він недоспілу ягоду свою, й, як маслина, поронить цьвіт свій.

34

For the company of hypocrites will be barren,
And fire will consume the tents of bribery.

34

Оттак опустїє дом безбожника, й огонь пожере шатри підкупства,

35

They conceive trouble and bring forth futility;
Their womb prepares deceit.”

35

(в думцї) Почав він зло, а зродив льжу, та й нутро (серце) його наготовує зраду.
