The Peril of Adultery

My son, pay attention to my wisdom;
[a]Lend your ear to my understanding,

1

Мій сину, на мудрість мою уважа́й, нахили своє ухо до мого розуму,

That you may [b]preserve discretion,
And your lips may keep knowledge.

щоб розважність ти міг стерегти́, а пізна́ння — хай у́ста твої стережу́ть!

3

For the lips of [c]an immoral woman drip honey,
And her mouth is smoother than oil;

Бо кра́пають со́лодощ губи блудни́ці, а у́ста її від оливи масні́ші,

4

But in the end she is bitter as wormwood,
Sharp as a two-edged sword.

та гірки́й їй кінець, мов поли́н, гострий, як меч обосі́чний, —

5

Her feet go down to death,
Her steps lay hold of [d]hell.

5

її ноги до смерти спускаються, шео́лу тримаються кроки її!

6

Lest you ponder her path of life —
Her ways are unstable;
You do not know them.

Вона путь життя не урі́внює, її стежки непевні, і цього не знає вона.

7

Therefore hear me now, my children,
And do not depart from the words of my mouth.

Тож тепер, мої діти, мене ви послухайте, не відхо́дьте від слів моїх уст:

Remove your way far from her,
And do not go near the door of her house,

віддали́ ти від неї дорогу свою, і не зближа́йсь до дверей її дому,

9

Lest you give your [e]honor to others,
And your years to the cruel one;

щоб слави своєї ти іншим не дав, а роки свої — для жорстокого,

10

Lest aliens be filled with your [f]wealth,
And your labors go to the house of a foreigner;

10

щоб чужі не наси́тились сили твоєї й маєтку твого́ в чужім домі!

11

And you mourn at last,
When your flesh and your body are consumed,

І будеш стогнати при своєму кінці́, як знемо́жеться тіло твоє й твої сили,

12

And say:
“How I have hated instruction,
And my heart despised correction!

і скажеш: „Як нена́видів я те напу́чування, а карта́ння те серце моє відкидало!

13

I have not obeyed the voice of my teachers,
Nor inclined my ear to those who instructed me!

І не слухав я голосу своїх учителі́в, і уха свого не схиля́в до наставників.

14

I was on the verge of total ruin,
In the midst of the assembly and congregation.”

Тро́хи не був я при кожному злому, в сере́дині збору й громади!“

15

Drink water from your own cistern,
And running water from your own well.

15

Пий воду з криниці своєї, і теку́че з свого коло́дязя:

16

Should your fountains be dispersed abroad,
[g]Streams of water in the streets?

16

чи ж мають на вулицю вилиті бути джере́ла твої, а на площі — потоки твоєї води? —

17

Let them be only your own,
And not for strangers with you.

17

Нехай вони будуть для тебе, для тебе самого, а не для чужих із тобою!

18

Let your fountain be blessed,
And rejoice with the wife of your youth.

Хай твоє джерело́ буде благослове́нне, і радій через жінку твоїх юних літ, —

19

As a loving deer and a graceful doe,
Let her breasts satisfy you at all times;
And always be [h]enraptured with her love.

вона ла́ня любовна та се́рна прекрасна, її пе́рса напоять тебе кожноча́сно, — впивайся ж наза́вжди коха́нням її!

20

For why should you, my son, be enraptured by an immoral woman,
And be embraced in the arms of a seductress?

20

І на́що, мій сину, ти маєш впиватись блудни́цею, і на́що ти бу́деш приго́ртати груди чужи́нки?

21

For the ways of man are before the eyes of the Lord,
And He [i]ponders all his paths.

Бож перед очима Господніми всі дороги люди́ни, і стежки́ її всі Він рівняє:

22

His own iniquities entrap the wicked man,
And he is caught in the cords of his sin.

22

власні провини безбожного схо́плять його, і поворо́ззям свого гріха буде зв'я́заний він,

23

He shall die for lack of instruction,
And in the greatness of his folly he shall go astray.

23

помиратиме він без напу́чування, і буде блукати в великій глупо́ті своїй!
