My son, keep my words,
And treasure my commands within you.

Keep my commands and live,
And my law as the apple of your eye.

Додержуй мої заповіді, — і будеш жити,
— і мою науку, як твоїх очей зіницю.

Bind them on your fingers;
Write them on the tablet of your heart.

Собі до пальців їх прив'яжи
та напиши їх на таблиці серця свого.

Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,”
And call understanding your nearest kin,

а розум назви другом,

That they may keep you from the immoral woman,
From the seductress who flatters with her words.

The Crafty Harlot

For at the window of my house
I looked through my lattice,

And saw among the simple,
I perceived among the [a]youths,
A young man devoid[b] of understanding,

Passing along the street near her corner;
And he took the path to her house

In the twilight, in the evening,
In the black and dark night.

And there a woman met him,
With the attire of a harlot, and a crafty heart.

She was loud and rebellious,
Her feet would not stay at home.

ноги її не посидять у хаті.

At times she was outside, at times in the open square,
Lurking at every corner.

То на вулиці, то на майданах,
на всіх розпуттях у засідку сідає.

So she caught him and kissed him;
With an [c]impudent face she said to him:

Вона хапає його та цілує,
і безлично до нього каже:

“I have peace offerings with me;
Today I have paid my vows.

“Мала принести мирні жертви,
сьогодні я мої обітниці сповнила.

15

So I came out to meet you,
Diligently to seek your face,
And I have found you.

Тому й вийшла я тобі назустріч,
тебе шукати — та знайшла тебе я.

I have spread my bed with tapestry,
Colored coverings of Egyptian linen.

Постелю мою я прибрала килимами,
тонку єгипетську тканину розстелила.

17

I have perfumed my bed
With myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon.

Поприскала я ліжко моє
міррою, алое, цинамоном.

18

Come, let us take our fill of love until morning;
Let us delight ourselves with love.

Ходи лишень, упийся до ранку пестощами,
та насолодимось любов'ю,

19

For [d]my husband is not at home;
He has gone on a long journey;

бо мужа нема дома,
вибравсь у далекую дорогу.

20

He has taken a bag of money [e]with him,
And will come home [f]on the appointed day.”

Сакву грошей забрав з собою;
як місяць буде у повні, повернеться він додому.”

[g]With her enticing speech she caused him to yield,
With her flattering lips she [h]seduced him.

Зводить вона його своїм щедрим щебетанням,
зводить його солодкими словами.

22

Immediately he went after her, as an ox goes to the slaughter,
Or [i]as a fool to the correction of the [j]stocks,

І він умить за нею тягне,
немов віл, що йде під обух,
немов олень, що в сильце вскочив,

23

Till an arrow struck his liver.
As a bird hastens to the snare,
He did not know it [k]would cost his life.

покіль стріла його печінки не прошиє,
немов та пташка, що сама летить у сітку,
не знаючи, що йдеться про її погибель.

24

Now therefore, listen to me, my children;
Pay attention to the words of my mouth:

Слухай тепер мене, мій сину,
вважай на слова уст моїх.

25

Do not let your heart turn aside to her ways,
Do not stray into her paths;

25

Нехай твоє серце до її доріг не хилиться,
не блукай її стежками;

26

For she has cast down many wounded,
And all who were slain by her were strong men.

бо багатьох вона на смерть поранила,
і найсильніші всі жертвою її упали.

27

Her house is the way to [l]hell,
Descending to the chambers of death.

Дім її — дорога до Шеолу,
