    God’s Case Against Israel

    Moreover the word of the Lord came to me, saying,

    Das Wort des HERRN erging an mich:

    “Go and cry in the hearing of Jerusalem, saying, ‘Thus says the Lord:
    “I remember you,
    The kindness of your youth,
    The love of your betrothal,
    When you [a]went after Me in the wilderness,
    In a land not sown.

    Auf! Ruf Jerusalem laut ins Ohr: So spricht der HERR: Ich gedenke deiner Jugendtreue, der Liebe deiner Brautzeit, wie du mir in der Wüste gefolgt bist, im Land ohne Aussaat.

    Israel was holiness to the Lord,
    The firstfruits of His increase.
    All that devour him will offend;
    Disaster will come upon them,” says the Lord.’ ”

    Heilig war Israel dem HERRN, Erstlingsfrucht seiner Ernte. Wer davon aß, machte sich schuldig, Unheil kam über ihn — Spruch des HERRN.

    Hear the word of the Lord, O house of Jacob and all the families of the house of Israel.

    Hört das Wort des HERRN, ihr vom Haus Jakob und all ihr Geschlechter des Hauses Israel!

    Thus says the Lord:
    “What injustice have your fathers found in Me,
    That they have gone far from Me,
    Have followed [b]idols,
    And have become idolaters?

    So spricht der HERR: Was fanden eure Väter Unrechtes an mir, dass sie sich von mir entfernten, nichtigen Göttern nachliefen und so selber zunichte wurden?

    Neither did they say, ‘Where is the Lord,
    Who brought us up out of the land of Egypt,
    Who led us through the wilderness,
    Through a land of deserts and pits,
    Through a land of drought and the shadow of death,
    Through a land that no one crossed
    And where no one dwelt?’

    Sie fragten nicht: Wo ist der HERR, der uns aus dem Land Ägypten heraufgeführt, der uns in der Wüste den Weg gewiesen hat, im Land der Steppen und Schluchten, im dürren und düsteren Land, im Land, das keiner durchwandert und niemand bewohnt?

    I brought you into a bountiful country,
    To eat its fruit and its goodness.
    But when you entered, you defiled My land
    And made My heritage an abomination.

    Ich brachte euch dann in das Gartenland, um euch seine Früchte und Güter genießen zu lassen. Aber kaum seid ihr dort gewesen, da habt ihr mein Land entweiht und mein Eigentum zum Abscheu gemacht.

    The priests did not say, ‘Where is the Lord?’
    And those who handle the law did not know Me;
    The rulers also transgressed against Me;
    The prophets prophesied by Baal,
    And walked after things that do not profit.

    Die Priester fragten nicht: Wo ist der HERR? Die Hüter der Weisung kannten mich nicht, die Hirten des Volkes wurden mir untreu. Die Propheten prophezeiten bei Baal und liefen unnützen Götzen nach.

    “Therefore I will yet [c]bring charges against you,” says the Lord,
    “And against your children’s children I will bring charges.

    Darum muss ich euch weiter anklagen — Spruch des HERRN — und gegen eure Kindeskinder Klage erheben.

    For pass beyond the coasts of [d]Cyprus and see,
    Send to [e]Kedar and consider diligently,
    And see if there has been such a thing.

    Geht doch hinüber zu den Inseln der Kittäer und seht euch um oder schickt nach Kedar, forscht genau nach und seht zu, ob irgendwo etwas Ähnliches geschah!

    Has a nation changed its gods,
    Which are not gods?
    But My people have changed their Glory
    For what does not profit.

    Hat je ein Volk seine Götter gewechselt? Dabei sind es gar keine Götter. Mein Volk aber hat seinen Ruhm gegen unnütze Götzen vertauscht.

    Be astonished, O heavens, at this,
    And be horribly afraid;
    Be very desolate,” says the Lord.

    Entsetzt euch darüber, ihr Himmel, erschaudert gewaltig! — Spruch des HERRN.

    “For My people have committed two evils:
    They have forsaken Me, the fountain of living waters,
    And hewn themselves cisterns — broken cisterns that can hold no water.

    Denn mein Volk hat doppeltes Unrecht verübt: Mich hat es verlassen, den Quell des lebendigen Wassers, um sich Zisternen zu graben, Zisternen mit Rissen, die das Wasser nicht halten.

    “Is Israel a servant?
    Is he a homeborn slave?
    Why is he plundered?

    Ist Israel denn ein Knecht oder ein im Haus geborener Sklave? Warum wurde es zur Beute?

    The young lions roared at him, and growled;
    They made his land waste;
    His cities are burned, without inhabitant.

    Über ihm brüllten Löwen und ließen ihre Stimme erschallen. Sie machten sein Land zur Wüste; seine Städte sind verbrannt und menschenleer.

    Also the people of [f]Noph and Tahpanhes
    Have [g]broken the crown of your head.

    Sogar die Leute von Memfis und Tachpanhes zertrümmern dir den Schädel.

    Have you not brought this on yourself,
    In that you have forsaken the Lord your God
    When He led you in the way?

    Geschieht dir das nicht deshalb, weil du den HERRN, deinen Gott, in der Zeit verlassen hast, als er dich geleitete auf dem Weg?

    And now why take the road to Egypt,
    To drink the waters of Sihor?
    Or why take the road to Assyria,
    To drink the waters of [h]the River?

    Was nützt dir jetzt der Weg nach Ägypten, um Nilwasser zu trinken, und was nützt dir jetzt der Weg nach Assur, um Eufratwasser zu trinken?

    Your own wickedness will correct you,
    And your backslidings will rebuke you.
    Know therefore and see that it is an evil and bitter thing
    That you have forsaken the Lord your God,
    And the [i]fear of Me is not in you,”
    Says the Lord God of hosts.

    Dein böses Tun straft dich, deine Abtrünnigkeit züchtigt dich. So erkenne doch und sieh ein, wie schlimm und bitter es ist, den HERRN, deinen Gott, zu verlassen und keine Furcht vor mir zu haben — Spruch des Herrn, des GOTTES der Heerscharen.

    “For of old I have broken your yoke and burst your bonds;
    And you said, ‘I will not [j]transgress,’
    When on every high hill and under every green tree
    You lay down, playing the harlot.

    Von jeher habe ich dein Joch zerbrochen, deine Stricke zerrissen. Doch du hast gesagt: Ich will nicht dienen. Auf jedem hohen Hügel und unter jedem üppigen Baum hast du dich als Dirne hingestreckt.

    Yet I had planted you a noble vine, a seed of highest quality.
    How then have you turned before Me
    Into the degenerate plant of an alien vine?

    Ich aber hatte dich als Edelrebe gepflanzt, als gutes, edles Gewächs. Wie hast du dich gewandelt zum Wildling, zum entarteten Weinstock!

    For though you wash yourself with lye, and use much soap,
    Yet your iniquity is marked[k] before Me,” says the Lord God.

    Selbst wenn du dich mit Lauge waschen und noch so viel Seife verwenden wolltest, deine Schuld bliebe doch ein Schmutzfleck vor meinen Augen — Spruch GOTTES, des Herrn.

    “How can you say, ‘I am not [l]polluted,
    I have not gone after the Baals’?
    See your way in the valley;
    Know what you have done:
    You are a swift dromedary breaking loose in her ways,

    Wie kannst du sagen: Ich bin nicht unrein geworden, den Baalen bin ich nicht nachgelaufen? Schau auf dein Treiben im Tal, erkenne, was du verübt hast! Eine schnelle Kamelstute bist du, die kreuz und quer ihre Wege rennt,

    A wild donkey used to the wilderness,
    That sniffs at the wind in her desire;
    In her time of mating, who can turn her away?
    All those who seek her will not weary themselves;
    In her month they will find her.

    eine wilde Eselin, die an die Wüste gewöhnt ist. In ihrer Brunst schnappt sie nach Luft. Wer vermag ihre Gier zu hemmen? Jeder, der sie begehrt, findet sie ohne Mühe zur Zeit ihrer Brunst.

    Withhold your foot from being unshod, and your throat from thirst.
    But you said, ‘There is no hope.
    No! For I have loved aliens, and after them I will go.’

    Erspare deinem Fuß das Barfußgehen und deiner Kehle den Durst! Du aber sagst: Nein, lass mich! Denn ich bin verliebt in die Fremden und will ihnen nachlaufen.

    “As the thief is ashamed when he is found out,
    So is the house of Israel ashamed;
    They and their kings and their princes, and their priests and their prophets,

    Wie ein ertappter Dieb sich schämt, so müssen sich die Leute vom Haus Israel schämen, sie selbst, ihre Könige und Beamten, ihre Priester und Propheten.

    Saying to a tree, ‘You are my father,’
    And to a stone, ‘You gave birth to me.’
    For they have turned their back to Me, and not their face.
    But in the time of their trouble
    They will say, ‘Arise and save us.’

    Sie sagen ja zum Holz: Du bist mein Vater und zum Stein: Du hast mich geboren. Sie kehren mir den Rücken zu und nicht das Gesicht; sind sie aber in Not, dann rufen sie: Erheb dich und hilf uns!

    But where are your gods that you have made for yourselves?
    Let them arise,
    If they can save you in the time of your [m]trouble;
    For according to the number of your cities
    Are your gods, O Judah.

    Wo sind nun deine Götter, die du dir gemacht hast? Sie mögen sich erheben, falls sie dir helfen können, wenn du in Not bist. Denn so zahlreich wie deine Städte, Juda, sind auch deine Götter.

    “Why will you plead with Me?
    You all have transgressed against Me,” says the Lord.

    Warum streitet ihr gegen mich? Ihr alle seid mir untreu geworden — Spruch des HERRN.

    “In vain I have chastened your children;
    They received no correction.
    Your sword has devoured your prophets
    Like a destroying lion.

    Vergeblich schlug ich eure Söhne; sie nahmen die Züchtigung nicht an. Euer Schwert fraß eure Propheten wie ein reißender Löwe.

    “O generation, see the word of the Lord!
    Have I been a wilderness to Israel,
    Or a land of darkness?
    Why do My people say, ‘We [n]are lords;
    We will come no more to You’?

    Ihr nun, das gegenwärtige Geschlecht, schaut auf das Wort des HERRN! Bin ich denn für Israel eine Wüste geworden oder ein finsteres Land? Warum sagt mein Volk: Wir wollen frei umherschweifen, wir kommen nicht mehr zu dir?

    Can a virgin forget her ornaments,
    Or a bride her attire?
    Yet My people have forgotten Me days without number.
  • 32
    Vergisst denn ein Mädchen seinen Schmuck, eine Braut ihre Bänder? Mein Volk aber hat mich vergessen seit ungezählten Tagen.

    “Why do you beautify your way to seek love?
    Therefore you have also taught
    The wicked women your ways.
  • 33
    Wie gut findest du deinen Weg, wenn du Liebe suchst. Sogar an Verbrechen hast du dein Verhalten gewöhnt.

    Also on your skirts is found
    The blood of the lives of the poor innocents.
    I have not found it by [o]secret search,
    But plainly on all these things.

    Selbst am Saum deiner Kleider fand sich das Blut von Armen, von Unschuldigen, die du nicht etwa beim Einbruch ertappt hast. Ja, es fand sich sogar noch mehr.

    Yet you say, ‘Because I am innocent,
    Surely His anger shall turn from me.’
    Behold, I will plead My case against you,
    Because you say, ‘I have not sinned.’

    Und trotzdem sagst du: Ich bin unschuldig; sein Zorn hat sich ja von mir abgewandt. — Aber ich gehe ins Gericht mit dir, weil du sagst: Ich habe mich nicht versündigt.

    Why do you gad about so much to change your way?
    Also you shall be ashamed of Egypt as you were ashamed of Assyria.

    Wie kannst du nur so leicht bereit sein, deinen Weg zu wechseln! Auch von Ägypten wirst du enttäuscht, wie du von Assur enttäuscht worden bist.

    Indeed you will go forth from him
    With your hands on your head;
    For the Lord has rejected your trusted allies,
    And you will not prosper by them.

    Auch von dort wirst du wegziehen, die Hände über dem Kopf. Denn der HERR verwirft alle, denen du vertraust; du hast mit ihnen kein Glück.
