A False Proverb Refuted

The word of the Lord came to me again, saying,

І до мене було Господнє слово, що промовляло:

“What do you mean when you use this proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying:
‘The fathers have eaten sour grapes,
And the children’s teeth are set on edge’?

Людський сину, чим для вас є ця притча в синів Ізраїля, що каже: Батьки їли нестиглий виноград, а зуби дітей мають оскомину?

“As I live,” says the Lord God, “you shall no longer use this proverb in Israel.

Живу Я, — говорить Господь, — якщо ще будуть говорити цю притчу в Ізраїлі.

“Behold, all souls are Mine;
The soul of the father
As well as the soul of the son is Mine;
The soul who sins shall die.

Адже всі душі — Мої. Так, як душа батька, так і душа сина, — Мої. Душа, яка грішить, вона помре.

But if a man is just
And does what is lawful and right;

А людина, яка буде праведною, що чинитиме суд і праведність,

If he has not eaten [a]on the mountains,
Nor lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel,
Nor defiled his neighbor’s wife,
Nor approached a woman during her impurity;

не їстиме на горах і не підніматиме своїх очей до милого домові Ізраїля, і не безчеститиме жінки свого ближнього, і не наближатиметься до жінки, що має виділення,

7

If he has not oppressed anyone,
But has restored to the debtor his pledge;
Has robbed no one by violence,
But has given his bread to the hungry
And covered the naked with clothing;

і не насилуватиме людини, поруку віддаватиме тому, хто заставив, і не грабуватиме грабунку, даватиме свій хліб голодуючому, і одягатиме нагого,

If he has not [b]exacted usury
Nor taken any increase,
But has withdrawn his hand from iniquity
And executed true [c]judgment between man and man;

і не даватиме на лихву свого срібла, і не братиме понад міру, і відвертатиме свою руку від неправедності, чинитиме праведний суд між чоловіком і між його ближнім,

If he has walked in My statutes
And kept My judgments faithfully —
He is just;
He shall surely live!”
Says the Lord God.

і ходитиме за Моїми приписами, і зберігатиме Мої заповіді, щоб їх чинити, — цей є праведний, він безсумнівно буде жити [1] , — говорить Господь.

“If he begets a son who is a robber
Or a shedder of blood,
Who does any of these things

І якщо він породить поганого сина, що проливає кров і що чинить гріхи,

11

And does none of those duties,
But has eaten [d]on the mountains
Or defiled his neighbor’s wife;

11

який не пішов дорогою свого праведного батька, але й на висотах їв жертви, і опоганив жінку свого ближнього,

12

If he has oppressed the poor and needy,
Robbed by violence,
Not restored the pledge,
Lifted his eyes to the idols,
Or committed abomination;

12

і насилував бідного й убогого, і здобичі не привласнив, і застави не віддав, а уставився своїми очима на ідолів, чинив беззаконня,

13

If he has exacted usury
Or taken increase —
Shall he then live?
He shall not live!
If he has done any of these abominations,
He shall surely die;
His blood shall be upon him.

з лихвою давав і надмірно брав, — цей безсумнівно не буде жити [2] , він вчинив усі ці беззаконня, він неодмінно помре [3] , — його кров буде на ньому.

14

“If, however, he begets a son
Who sees all the sins which his father has done,
And considers but does not do likewise;

Якщо ж породить сина, і він побачить усі гріхи свого батька, які він робив, і злякається, і не зробить згідно із цими,

15

Who has not eaten [e]on the mountains,
Nor lifted his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel,
Nor defiled his neighbor’s wife;

15

на висотах не їв жертв, і своїх очей не покладав на миле домові Ізраїля, і не опоганив жінки свого ближнього,

16

Has not oppressed anyone,
Nor withheld a pledge,
Nor robbed by violence,
But has given his bread to the hungry
And covered the naked with clothing;

16

і не насилував чоловіка, і заручене не затримав, і здобичі не привласнив, дав свій хліб бідному, а нагого одягнув,

17

Who has withdrawn his hand from [f]the poor
And not received usury or increase,
But has executed My judgments
And walked in My statutes —
He shall not die for the iniquity of his father;
He shall surely live!

і від неправедності відвернув свою руку, не взяв лихви ані понад міру, чинив праведне і ходив за Моїми приписами, — він не помре в беззаконнях свого батька, він безсумнівно буде жити [4].

18

“As for his father,
Because he cruelly oppressed,
Robbed his brother by violence,
And did what is not good among his people,
Behold, he shall die for his iniquity.

А його батько, якщо гнобитиме гнобленням і привласнював здобич, чинив протилежне посеред Мого народу, то він помре у своєму беззаконні.

Turn and Live

“Yet you say, ‘Why should the son not bear the guilt of the father?’ Because the son has done what is lawful and right, and has kept all My statutes and observed them, he shall surely live.

І ви говоритимете: Як то, що син не взяв беззаконня батька? Адже син чинив праведність і милосердя, зберіг усі Мої закони і їх виконав. Він безсумнівно буде жити [5].

20

The soul who sins shall die. The son shall not bear the guilt of the father, nor the father bear the guilt of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself.

А душа, що згрішила, помре. А син не візьме неправедність батька, ані батько не візьме неправедність сина. Праведність праведного буде на ньому, і беззаконня беззаконного буде на ньому.

21

“But if a wicked man turns from all his sins which he has committed, keeps all My statutes, and does what is lawful and right, he shall surely live; he shall not die.

Якщо ж беззаконний відвернеться від усіх своїх беззаконь, які він чинив, і зберігатиме всі Мої заповіді, і чинитиме праведність і милосердя, — він безсумнівно буде жити [6] , не помре!

22

None of the transgressions which he has committed shall be remembered against him; because of the righteousness which he has done, he shall live.

22

Усі його проступки, які він учинив, не згадаються. Житиме в його праведності, яку він чинив.

23

Do I have any pleasure at all that the wicked should die?” says the Lord God, “and not that he should turn from his ways and live?

23

Невже ж Я справді бажатиму [7] смерті беззаконного, — говорить Господь, — хіба лиш, щоб звернути його з поганої дороги, і щоб він жив?

24

“But when a righteous man turns away from his righteousness and commits iniquity, and does according to all the abominations that the wicked man does, shall he live? All the righteousness which he has done shall not be remembered; because of the unfaithfulness of which he is guilty and the sin which he has committed, because of them he shall die.

Коли ж праведний відвернеться від своєї праведності й чинитиме неправедність за всяким беззаконням, яке робив беззаконний, усі його праведності, які він робив, не згадаються в його переступах, якими провинився, і у своїх гріхах, якими він згрішив, — у них він помре.

25

“Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord is not fair.’ Hear now, O house of Israel, is it not My way which is fair, and your ways which are not fair?

А ви сказали: Господня дорога не є прямою. Послухайте ж, доме Ізраїля: Чи Моя дорога не є пряма? Хіба не ваша дорога є непряма?

26

When a righteous man turns away from his righteousness, commits iniquity, and dies in it, it is because of the iniquity which he has done that he dies.

Коли праведний відвернеться від своєї праведності й учинить переступ, то помре в переступі, який він учинив, — у ньому помре!

27

Again, when a wicked man turns away from the wickedness which he committed, and does what is lawful and right, he preserves himself alive.

27

А коли беззаконний відвернеться від свого беззаконня, яке він чинив, і робитиме суд і праведність, то цей зберіг свою душу

28

Because he considers and turns away from all the transgressions which he committed, he shall surely live; he shall not die.

28

і відвернувся від усіх своїх безбожностей, які він чинив, — він безсумнівно буде жити [8] , не помре!

29

Yet the house of Israel says, ‘The way of the Lord is not fair.’ O house of Israel, is it not My ways which are fair, and your ways which are not fair?

29

А дім Ізраїля говорить: Господня дорога не є прямою. Хіба Моя дорога не є пряма, доме Ізраїля? Чи ваша дорога не є прямою?

30

“Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways,” says the Lord God. “Repent, and turn from all your transgressions, so that iniquity will not be your ruin.

Кожного з вас, доме Ізраїля, судитиму за його дорогою, — говорить Господь, — поверніться і відверніться від усіх ваших безбожностей, і не будуть вам на муку неправедності!

31

Cast away from you all the transgressions which you have committed, and get yourselves a new heart and a new spirit. For why should you die, O house of Israel?

Відкиньте від себе всі ваші безбожності, якими ви були безбожними проти Мене, і створіть собі нове серце і новий дух. Чому помираєте, доме Ізраїля?

32

For I have no pleasure in the death of one who dies,” says the Lord God. “Therefore turn and live!”

32

Тому що Я не бажаю смерті того, хто вмирає, — говорить Господь!
