Egypt Cut Down Like a Great Tree
Now it came to pass in the eleventh year, in the third month, on the first day of the month, that the word of the Lord came to me, saying,

Im 11. Jahr unserer Verbannung, am 1. Tag des 3. Monats, empfing ich eine Botschaft vom HERRN. Er sprach zu mir:
“Son of man, say to Pharaoh king of Egypt and to his multitude:
‘Whom are you like in your greatness?
‘Whom are you like in your greatness?
»Du Mensch, sag zum Pharao, dem König von Ägypten, mit seinem ganzen Prunk: Groß ist deine Macht, womit kann ich dich vergleichen?
Indeed Assyria was a cedar in Lebanon,
With fine branches that shaded the forest,
And of high stature;
And its top was among the thick boughs.

Schau, eine Zypresse bist du, eine Zeder auf dem Libanon. Ihre schönen Zweige spenden Schatten; hoch ist sie gewachsen, ihr Wipfel ragt bis in die Wolken empor.
Das Erdreich versorgt sie mit Wasser, die Quellen in der Tiefe lassen sie in die Höhe wachsen; sie speisen auch die Bäche im Wald und tränken die Bäume ringsum.

Weil die Zeder so viel Wasser hat, ist sie größer als alle anderen Bäume; sie besitzt eine prächtige Krone mit vielen langen Ästen.
In ihren Zweigen nisten die Vögel, in ihrem Schutz werfen die wilden Tiere ihre Jungen, und in ihrem Schatten wohnen viele Völker.

Sie ist ein wunderschöner Baum, hochgewachsen und mit langen Zweigen, denn ihre Wurzeln bekommen reichlich Wasser.
Keine andere Zeder ist so schön wie sie, keine Zypresse oder Platane hat so mächtige Äste, selbst die Bäume in meinem Garten halten einem Vergleich mit ihr nicht stand.

Ich, der Herr, habe sie schön gemacht und ihr viele Zweige gegeben. Alle Bäume in Eden blicken voller Neid zu ihr auf.
Doch weil sie so hochgewachsen ist und ihr Wipfel bis in die Wolken ragt, ist sie stolz und überheblich geworden. Darum sage ich, Gott, der HERR:
therefore I will deliver it into the hand of the mighty one of the nations, and he shall surely deal with it; I have driven it out for its wickedness.
Ich gebe sie in die Gewalt des mächtigsten aller Könige; er wird sie so behandeln, wie sie es für ihre Gottlosigkeit verdient hat. Sie wollte von mir nichts wissen, und so wende auch ich mich von ihr ab.
And aliens, the most terrible of the nations, have cut it down and left it; its branches have fallen on the mountains and in all the valleys; its boughs lie broken by all the rivers of the land; and all the peoples of the earth have gone from under its shadow and left it.
Ein grausames Heer aus vielen Völkern wird sie fällen und zu Boden werfen. Ihre Zweige fallen auf die Berge und in die Täler, ihre Äste zerbrechen und bleiben in den Schluchten liegen. Die Völker, die in ihrem Schatten gewohnt haben, ziehen fort und lassen sie achtlos zurück.
‘On its ruin will remain all the birds of the heavens,
And all the beasts of the field will come to its branches —

Auf ihrem gefällten Stamm sitzen die Vögel, die wilden Tiere hausen zwischen ihren toten Ästen.
So that no trees by the waters may ever again exalt themselves for their height, nor set their tops among the thick boughs, that no tree which drinks water may ever be high enough to reach up to them.
‘For they have all been delivered to death,
To the depths of the earth,
Among the children of men who go down to the Pit.’

In Zukunft soll kein Baum, der am Wasser steht, wieder so hoch wachsen, keiner soll seinen Wipfel bis in die Wolken strecken und sich über andere erheben. Jeder hohe Baum wird gefällt, er muss hinunter in die Totenwelt, genau wie die Menschen.
Ich, Gott, der HERR, sage: Wenn ich die Zeder in die Totenwelt hinabstürze, trauert das Wasser in der Tiefe, die Flüsse fließen nicht mehr, und die Quellen versiegen. Ich sorge dafür, dass der Libanon sich in Trauer hüllt und die Bäume im Wald verdorren.
Wenn sie dorthin fällt, wo die Toten ruhen, gibt es ein solches Getöse, dass die Völker erschrecken. Die Bäume aus meinem Garten und die besten, gut bewässerten Bäume des Libanon erwarten sie schon und trösten sich damit, dass auch die große Zeder ihr Schicksal teilt.

Denn sie sind schon dort angekommen, zusammen mit den Menschen, die im Krieg gefallen sind. Alle Verbündeten, die im Schatten der Zeder gewohnt haben, sind bereits in der Totenwelt versammelt.
‘To which of the trees in Eden will you then be likened in glory and greatness? Yet you shall be brought down with the trees of Eden to the depths of the earth; you shall lie in the midst of the uncircumcised, with those slain by the sword. This is Pharaoh and all his multitude,’ says the Lord God.”
Ägypten, noch bist du groß und wunderschön, womit kann ich dich vergleichen? Kein Baum im Garten Eden reicht an dich heran. Doch zusammen mit den anderen Bäumen wirst du hinabstürzen ins Totenreich. Dort liegst du mitten unter den unbeschnittenen Heiden, die im Krieg gefallen sind. Ja, so wird es dem Pharao und seinem ganzen Prunk ergehen! Darauf gebe ich, Gott, der HERR, mein Wort!«
