    The Wicked Are Slain

    Then He called out in my hearing with a loud voice, saying, “Let those who have charge over the city draw near, each with a [a]deadly weapon in his hand.”

    Ich hörte, wie Gott mit lauter Stimme rief: »Kommt und vollstreckt das Urteil über Jerusalem! Greift zu den Waffen, um die Menschen in der Stadt zu vernichten!«

    And suddenly six men came from the direction of the upper gate, which faces north, each with his [b]battle-ax in his hand. One man among them was clothed with linen and had a writer’s inkhorn [c]at his side. They went in and stood beside the bronze altar.

    Da kamen sechs Männer durch das obere Tor an der Nordseite des Tempels, jeder von ihnen hielt eine tödliche Waffe in der Hand. Bei ihnen war ein Mann, der ein Gewand aus Leinen trug. An seinem Gürtel hing die Ausrüstung eines Schreibers. Die Männer kamen näher und stellten sich neben den bronzenen Altar.

    Now the glory of the God of Israel had gone up from the cherub, where it had been, to the threshold of the [d]temple. And He called to the man clothed with linen, who had the writer’s inkhorn at his side;

    Der HERR, der Gott Israels, entfernte sich von den Keruben, über denen er in seiner Herrlichkeit thronte, und ließ sich an der Türschwelle des Tempels nieder. Dann rief er den Mann mit dem Leinengewand und dem Schreibzeug am Gürtel zu sich

    and the Lord said to him, “Go through the midst of the city, through the midst of Jerusalem, and put a mark on the foreheads of the men who sigh and cry over all the abominations that are done within it.”

    und befahl ihm: »Geh durch ganz Jerusalem und mache ein Zeichen auf die Stirn all der Menschen, die seufzen und klagen über die abscheulichen Dinge, die in dieser Stadt getrieben werden!«

    To the others He said in my [e]hearing, “Go after him through the city and kill;[f] do not let your eye spare, nor have any pity.

    Ich hörte, wie er zu den anderen Männern sagte: »Geht hinter ihm her durch die Stadt und schlagt zu! Zeigt kein Mitleid, verschont niemanden!

    Utterly[g] slay old and young men, maidens and little children and women; but do not come near anyone on whom is the mark; and begin at My sanctuary.” So they began with the elders who were before the [h]temple.

    Tötet die alten und die jungen Männer, die Frauen, Mädchen und Kinder! Bringt sie alle um! Doch rührt keinen von denen an, die das Zeichen auf der Stirn haben! Hier in meinem Heiligtum sollt ihr beginnen!« Da machten sie sich ans Werk und töteten zuerst die Führer des Volkes, die vor dem Tempel standen.

    Then He said to them, “Defile the [i]temple, and fill the courts with the slain. Go out!” And they went out and killed in the city.

    Dann sagte Gott zu den sechs Männern: »Bringt die Leichen in die Vorhöfe des Tempels — ja, entweiht ihn damit! Dann geht in die Stadt!« Sie gingen hinaus,

    So it was, that while they were killing them, I was left alone; and I fell on my face and cried out, and said, “Ah, Lord God! Will You destroy all the remnant of Israel in pouring out Your fury on Jerusalem?”

    und während sie dort die Menschen niedermetzelten, blieb ich allein auf dem Tempelvorhof zurück. Ich warf mich zu Boden und schrie: »Ach, HERR, mein Gott! Bist du so zornig über Jerusalem, dass du auch noch den letzten Rest des Volkes ausrotten willst?«

    Then He said to me, “The iniquity of the house of Israel and Judah is exceedingly great, and the land is full of bloodshed, and the city full of perversity; for they say, ‘The Lord has forsaken the land, and the Lord does not see!’

    Da antwortete er: »Die Leute von Israel und Juda haben unendlich viel Schuld auf sich geladen und hören einfach nicht auf damit! Im ganzen Land herrschen Mord und Totschlag, und in Jerusalem beugt man an jeder Ecke das Recht. Sie behaupten: ›Der HERR hat das Land verlassen, er sieht uns nicht!‹

    And as for Me also, My eye will neither spare, nor will I have pity, but I will recompense their deeds on their own head.”

    Darum werde ich keine Träne um sie vergießen und kein Mitleid mit ihnen haben. Jetzt bekommen sie von mir, was sie verdienen!«

    Just then, the man clothed with linen, who had the inkhorn at his side, reported back and said, “I have done as You commanded me.”

    In diesem Moment kam der Mann mit dem Leinengewand und dem Schreibzeug zurück und berichtete dem Herrn: »Ich habe getan, was du mir befohlen hast!«
