Vision of the Locusts

Thus the Lord God showed me: Behold, He formed locust swarms at the [a]beginning of the late crop; indeed it was the late crop after the king’s mowings.

Gott, der HERR, gab mir eine Vision: Ich sah, wie er Heuschreckenschwärme erschuf. Gerade hatte man das erste Heu eingebracht, das für die königlichen Stallungen bestimmt war, und das Gras wuchs allmählich wieder nach.

And so it was, when they had finished eating the grass of the land, that I said:
“O Lord God, forgive, I pray!
Oh,[b] that Jacob may stand,
For he is small!”

Da fielen die Heuschrecken über die Pflanzen im ganzen Land her. Als sie alles abgefressen hatten, rief ich: »Ach, HERR, Gott, vergib doch! Wie sollen die Nachkommen von Jakob sonst überleben? Sie sind ja ein so kleines Volk!«

So the Lord relented concerning this.
“It shall not be,” said the Lord.

Da hatte der HERR Erbarmen mit ihnen und sagte: »Was du eben gesehen hast, wird nicht geschehen!«

Vision of the Fire

Thus the Lord God showed me: Behold, the Lord God called [c]for conflict by fire, and it consumed the great deep and devoured the [d]territory.

Dann gab Gott, der HERR, mir eine weitere Vision: Ich sah, wie er Feuer herbeirief, um sein Volk zu bestrafen. Zuerst verzehrte es das Wasser in den Tiefen der Erde, dann bedeckten die Flammen das ganze Land.

Then I said:
“O Lord God, cease, I pray!
Oh, that Jacob may stand,
For he is small!”

Da rief ich: »Ach, HERR, Gott, bitte hör auf! Wie sollen die Nachkommen von Jakob sonst überleben? Sie sind ja ein so kleines Volk!«

So the Lord relented concerning this.
“This also shall not be,” said the Lord God.

Da hatte der HERR wieder Erbarmen mit ihnen und sagte: »Auch was du gerade gesehen hast, wird nicht geschehen.«

Vision of the Plumb Line

Thus He showed me: Behold, the Lord stood on a wall made with a plumb line, with a plumb line in His hand.

Zum dritten Mal gab der Herr mir eine Vision: Nun sah ich, wie er auf einer Mauer stand, die mit Hilfe eines Lots gebaut worden war. Er hielt ein Bleilot in der Hand

And the Lord said to me, “Amos, what do you see?”
And I said, “A plumb line.”
Then the Lord said:
“Behold, I am setting a plumb line
In the midst of My people Israel;
I will not pass by them anymore.

und fragte mich: »Amos, was siehst du?« »Ein Bleilot«, antwortete ich. Da sagte er: »Ich lege jetzt dieses Lot an mein Volk Israel, um es zu prüfen. In Zukunft gehe ich nicht mehr über ihre Sünden hinweg.

The [e]high places of Isaac shall be desolate,
And the [f]sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste.
I will rise with the sword against the house of Jeroboam.”

Ich verwüste die Opferstätten, wo die Nachkommen von Isaak ihre Götter verehren; ja, alle Heiligtümer Israels verwandle ich in Trümmerhaufen. Mein Schwert trifft das Königshaus von Jerobeam!«

Amaziah’s Complaint

Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, “Amos has conspired against you in the midst of the house of Israel. The land is not able to [g]bear all his words.

Amazja, der oberste Priester in Bethel, sandte einen Boten zu Jerobeam, dem König von Israel, und ließ ihm ausrichten: »Amos zettelt mitten in Israel einen Aufstand gegen dich an! Seine Reden sind unerträglich!

For thus Amos has said:
‘Jeroboam shall die by the sword,
And Israel shall surely be led away captive
From their own land.’ ”

Er hat behauptet: ›Jerobeam wird durchs Schwert umkommen, und das Volk Israel wird aus dem Land vertrieben und in die Verbannung geführt.‹«

Then Amaziah said to Amos:
“Go, you seer!
Flee to the land of Judah.
There eat bread,
And there prophesy.

Zu Amos sagte Amazja: »Du Prophet, verschwinde von hier und geh heim nach Juda! Dort kannst du weiter weissagen und dir so dein Brot verdienen.

But never again prophesy at Bethel,
For it is the king’s [h]sanctuary,
And it is the royal [i]residence.”

Aber hier in Bethel ist Schluss damit! Denn hier steht der Tempel des Königs, das wichtigste Heiligtum Israels.«

Then Amos answered, and said to Amaziah:
“I was no prophet,
Nor was I a son of a prophet,
But I was a sheepbreeder
And a tender of sycamore fruit.

Amos erwiderte: »Ich bin kein Prophet, der sich bezahlen lässt, und ich komme auch aus keiner Prophetenschule. Ich bin Viehzüchter und pflanze Maulbeerfeigenbäume an.

Then the Lord took me [j]as I followed the flock,
And the Lord said to me,
‘Go, prophesy to My people Israel.’

Aber der HERR hat mich von meiner Herde weggeholt und mir befohlen: ›Geh zu meinem Volk Israel und richte ihm meine Botschaft aus!‹

Now therefore, hear the word of the Lord:
You say, ‘Do not prophesy against Israel,
And do not [k]spout against the house of Isaac.’

Und nun willst du mir verbieten, den Auftrag Gottes zu erfüllen und zu den Israeliten, den Nachkommen von Isaak, zu sprechen? Hör, was der HERR dir ankündigt:

“Therefore thus says the Lord:
‘Your wife shall be a harlot in the city;
Your sons and daughters shall fall by the sword;
Your land shall be divided by survey line;
You shall die in a defiled land;
And Israel shall surely be led away captive
From his own land.’ ”

Deine Frau soll in dieser Stadt zur Hure werden, deine Söhne und Töchter werden im Krieg getötet, dein Grundbesitz wird an andere verteilt, und du selbst wirst in einem heidnischen Land sterben! Denn die Israeliten werden von hier verschleppt werden. Darauf gebe ich, der HERR, mein Wort!«
