The Command to Build God’s House
In the second year of King Darius, in the sixth month, on the first day of the month, the word of the Lord came by Haggai the prophet to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, saying,
In the second year of King Darius, in the sixth month, on the first day of the month, the word of the Lord came by Haggai the prophet to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, saying,
Im zweiten Jahr des Königs Darius, im sechsten Monat, am ersten Tage des Monats, geschah des HERRN Wort durch den Propheten Haggai zu Serubabel, dem Sohn Sealthiels, dem Fürsten Juda’s, und zu Josua, dem Sohn Jozadaks, dem Hohenpriester, und sprach:
“Thus speaks the Lord of hosts, saying: ‘This people says, “The time has not come, the time that the Lord’s house should be built.” ’ ”
So spricht der HERR Zebaoth: Dies Volk spricht: Die Zeit ist noch nicht da, daß man des HERRN Haus baue.
Then the word of the Lord came by Haggai the prophet, saying,
Und des HERRN Wort geschah durch den Propheten Haggai:
Aber eure Zeit ist da, daß ihr in getäfelten Häusern wohnt, und dies Haus muß wüst stehen?
Now therefore, thus says the Lord of hosts: “Consider your ways!
Nun, so spricht der HERR Zebaoth: Schauet, wie es euch geht!
“You have sown much, and bring in little;
You eat, but do not have enough;
You drink, but you are not filled with drink;
You clothe yourselves, but no one is warm;
And he who earns wages,
Earns wages to put into a bag with holes.”

Ihr säet viel, und bringet wenig ein; ihr esset, und werdet doch nicht satt; ihr trinket, und werdet doch nicht trunken; ihr kleidet euch, und könnt euch doch nicht erwärmen; und wer Geld verdient, der legt’s in einen löchrigen Beutel.
Thus says the Lord of hosts: “Consider your ways!
So spricht der HERR Zebaoth: Schauet, wie es euch geht!
Gehet hin auf das Gebirge und holet Holz und bauet das Haus; das soll mir angenehm sein, und ich will meine Ehre erzeigen, spricht der HERR.
“You looked for much, but indeed it came to little; and when you brought it home, I blew it away. Why?” says the Lord of hosts. “Because of My house that is in ruins, while every one of you runs to his own house.
Denn ihr wartet wohl auf viel, und siehe, es wird wenig; und ob ihr’s schon heimbringt, so zerstäube ich’s doch. Warum das? spricht der HERR Zebaoth. Darum daß mein Haus so wüst steht und ein jeglicher eilt auf sein Haus.
Therefore the heavens above you withhold the dew, and the earth withholds its fruit.
Darum hat der Himmel über euch den Tau verhalten und das Erdreich sein Gewächs.
For I called for a drought on the land and the mountains, on the grain and the new wine and the oil, on whatever the ground brings forth, on men and livestock, and on all the labor of your hands.”
Und ich habe die Dürre gerufen über Land und Berge, über Korn, Most, Öl und über alles, was aus der Erde kommt, auch über Leute und Vieh und über alle Arbeit der Hände.
The People’s Obedience
Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the Lord their God, and the words of Haggai the prophet, as the Lord their God had sent him; and the people feared the presence of the Lord.

Da gehorchte Serubabel, der Sohn Sealthiels, und Josua, der Sohn Jozadaks, der Hohepriester, und alle übrigen des Volks solcher Stimme des HERRN, ihres Gottes, und den Worten des Propheten Haggai, wie ihn der HERR, ihr Gott, gesandt hatte; und das Volk fürchtete sich vor dem HERRN.
Then Haggai, the Lord’s messenger, spoke the Lord’s message to the people, saying, “I am with you, says the Lord.”
Da sprach Haggai, der Engel des HERRN, der die Botschaft des HERRN hatte an das Volk: Ich bin mit euch, spricht der HERR.
So the Lord stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people; and they came and worked on the house of the Lord of hosts, their God,
Und der HERR erweckte den Geist Serubabels, des Sohnes Sealthiels, des Fürsten Juda’s, und den Geist Josuas, des Sohnes Jozadaks, des Hohenpriesters, und den Geist des ganzen übrigen Volks, daß sie kamen und arbeiteten am Hause des HERRN Zebaoth, ihres Gottes,
