Balaam Foretells the Happiness of Israel

Now when Balaam saw that it pleased the Lord to bless Israel, he did not go as at other times, to seek to use [a]sorcery, but he set his face toward the wilderness.

І побачив Валаам, що добрим є перед Господом, щоб благословити Ізраїль. Не пішов за звичаєм назустріч ворожбитству, а повернув своє обличчя до пустелі.

2

And Balaam raised his eyes, and saw Israel encamped according to their tribes; and the Spirit of God came upon him.

2

І Валаам, підвівши свої очі, побачив Ізраїля, який розташувався табором за племенами. І Божий Дух зійшов на нього.

Then he took up his oracle and said:
“The utterance of Balaam the son of Beor,
The utterance of the man whose eyes are opened,

Скориставшись своєю притчею, він сказав: Говорить Валаам, син Веора. Говорить людина, дійсно провидець.

4

The utterance of him who hears the words of God,
Who sees the vision of the Almighty,
Who falls down, with eyes wide open:

Говорить той, хто чує Божі слова, який уві сні, коли його очі відкриті, бачив Боже видіння!

5

“How lovely are your tents, O Jacob!
Your dwellings, O Israel!

5

Які гарні твої житла, Якове, і твої намети, Ізраїлю!

6

Like valleys that stretch out,
Like gardens by the riverside,
Like aloes planted by the Lord,
Like cedars beside the waters.

6

Вони — наче лісисті долини, наче сади біля річки і наче намети, які розбив Господь, — наче кедри поблизу води.

7

He shall pour water from his buckets,
And his seed shall be in many waters.
“His king shall be higher than Agag,
And his kingdom shall be exalted.

7

Вийде людина з його нащадків і пануватиме над багатьма народами, і царство його звеличиться понад царство Ґоґа, і стане великим його царство.

8

“God brings him out of Egypt;
He has strength like a wild ox;
He shall consume the nations, his enemies;
He shall break their bones
And pierce them with his arrows.

Бог вивів його з Єгипту, для нього Він, — слава, наче слава однорога, — поглине народи з його ворогів, і позбавить їх сили, і своїми стрілами застрелить ворога.

9

‘He bows down, he lies down as a lion;
And as a lion, who shall rouse him?’
“Blessed is he who blesses you,
And cursed is he who curses you.”

Лігши, спочине, як лев і наче левеня. Хто наважиться його розбудити? Ті, хто благословляє тебе, — благословенні, а ті, хто проклинає тебе, — прокляті!

Then Balak’s anger was aroused against Balaam, and he struck his hands together; and Balak said to Balaam, “I called you to curse my enemies, and look, you have bountifully blessed them these three times!

Now therefore, flee to your place. I said I would greatly honor you, but in fact, the Lord has kept you back from honor.”

Тож тепер утікай у свою місцевість. Я казав: Виявлю тобі честь! Та Господь тепер позбавив тебе слави!

12

So Balaam said to Balak, “Did I not also speak to your messengers whom you sent to me, saying,

А Валаам сказав Валакові: Хіба не сказав я твоїм гінцям, яких ти послав до мене, говорячи:

13

‘If Balak were to give me his house full of silver and gold, I could not go beyond the word of the Lord, to do good or bad of my own will. What the Lord says, that I must speak’?

13

Навіть якщо Валак дасть мені свій дім, повний срібла й золота, я не зможу порушити Господнє слово, щоб робити щось від себе — лихе чи добре? Що скаже Бог, те і говоритиму!

14

And now, indeed, I am going to my people. Come, I will advise you what this people will do to your people in the latter days.”

А тепер ось відходжу у свою місцевість. Давай пораджу тобі, що зробить цей народ твоєму народові в останні дні.

15

Balaam’s Fourth Prophecy

So he took up his oracle and said:
“The utterance of Balaam the son of Beor,
And the utterance of the man whose eyes are opened;

15

Він використав свою притчу і сказав: Говорить Валаам, син Веора. Говорить людина, дійсно провидець,

16

The utterance of him who hears the words of God,
And has the knowledge of the Most High,
Who sees the vision of the Almighty,
Who falls down, with eyes wide open:

16

яка чує Божі слова, знає думку Всевишнього. І, коли бачить Боже видіння, у сні його очі відкриті.

17

“I see Him, but not now;
I behold Him, but not near;
A Star shall come out of Jacob;
A Scepter shall rise out of Israel,
And [b]batter the brow of Moab,
And destroy all the sons of [c]tumult.

Вкажу на нього, але не тепер! Провіщаю його блаженним, але він — не близько! Підійметься зірка від Якова, і постане чоловік з Ізраїля. І розіб’є моавських вождів, і пограбує всіх синів Сита.

18

“And Edom shall be a possession;
Seir also, his enemies, shall be a possession,
While Israel does [d]valiantly.

18

І буде спадщиною Едом, і його ворог Ісав стане спадщиною, а Ізраїль діятиме в силі.

19

Out of Jacob One [e]shall have dominion,
And destroy the remains of the city.”

19

І постане з Якова, і знищить того, хто врятується з міста!

20

Then he looked on Amalek, and he took up his oracle and said:
“Amalek was first among the nations,
But shall be last until he perishes.”

20

Побачивши Амалика, скориставшись своєю притчею, він сказав: Амалик — початок народів, та їхні нащадки загинуть!

21

Then he looked on the Kenites, and he took up his oracle and said:
“Firm is your dwelling place,
And your nest is set in the rock;

21

А побачивши кенейця, він, скориставшись своєю притчею, сказав: Міцне твоє поселення! Але якщо і на скелі поставиш кубло своє,

22

Nevertheless Kain shall be burned.
How long until Asshur carries you away captive?”

22

та навіть якщо буде у Веора кубло хитрості, то і тоді ассирійці полонять тебе!

23

Then he took up his oracle and said:
“Alas! Who shall live when God does this?

23

І, бачачи Оґа, він знову вдався до своєї притчі й сказав: Ох, ох! Хто ж виживе, коли Бог здійснюватиме це?

24

But ships shall come from the coasts of Cyprus,[f]
And they shall afflict Asshur and afflict Eber,
And so shall [g]Amalek, until he perishes.”

24

І вийде з рук кіттійців, і пригноблять Ассура, і пригноблять євреїв, та вони разом загинуть!

25

So Balaam rose and departed and returned to his place; Balak also went his way.
