New King James Version

New International Version

  • Jesus Faces Pilate

Immediately, in the morning, the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council; and they bound Jesus, led Him away, and delivered Him to Pilate.
  • Jesus Before Pilate

Very early in the morning, the chief priests, with the elders, the teachers of the law and the whole Sanhedrin, made their plans. So they bound Jesus, led him away and handed him over to Pilate.
  • Then Pilate asked Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?”
He answered and said to him, “It is as you say.”
  • “Are you the king of the Jews?” asked Pilate.
“You have said so,” Jesus replied.
  • And the chief priests accused Him of many things, but He answered nothing.
  • The chief priests accused him of many things.
  • Then Pilate asked Him again, saying, “Do You answer nothing? See how many things [a]they testify against You!”
  • So again Pilate asked him, “Aren’t you going to answer? See how many things they are accusing you of.”
  • But Jesus still answered nothing, so that Pilate marveled.
  • But Jesus still made no reply, and Pilate was amazed.
  • Taking the Place of Barabbas

Now at the feast he was accustomed to releasing one prisoner to them, whomever they requested.
  • Now it was the custom at the festival to release a prisoner whom the people requested.
  • And there was one named Barabbas, who was chained with his fellow rebels; they had committed murder in the rebellion.
  • A man called Barabbas was in prison with the insurrectionists who had committed murder in the uprising.
  • Then the multitude, [b]crying aloud, began to ask him to do just as he had always done for them.
  • The crowd came up and asked Pilate to do for them what he usually did.
  • But Pilate answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?”
  • “Do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews?” asked Pilate,
  • For he knew that the chief priests had handed Him over because of envy.
  • knowing it was out of self-interest that the chief priests had handed Jesus over to him.
  • But the chief priests stirred up the crowd, so that he should rather release Barabbas to them.
  • But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have Pilate release Barabbas instead.
  • Pilate answered and said to them again, “What then do you want me to do with Him whom you call the King of the Jews?”
  • “What shall I do, then, with the one you call the king of the Jews?” Pilate asked them.
  • So they cried out again, “Crucify Him!”
  • “Crucify him!” they shouted.
  • Then Pilate said to them, “Why, what evil has He done?”
But they cried out all the more, “Crucify Him!”
  • “Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate.
But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!”
  • So Pilate, wanting to gratify the crowd, released Barabbas to them; and he delivered Jesus, after he had scourged Him, to be crucified.
  • Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified.
  • The Soldiers Mock Jesus

Then the soldiers led Him away into the hall called [c]Praetorium, and they called together the whole garrison.
  • The Soldiers Mock Jesus

The soldiers led Jesus away into the palace (that is, the Praetorium) and called together the whole company of soldiers.
  • And they clothed Him with purple; and they twisted a crown of thorns, put it on His head,
  • They put a purple robe on him, then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on him.
  • and began to salute Him, “Hail, King of the Jews!”
  • And they began to call out to him, “Hail, king of the Jews!”
  • Then they struck Him on the head with a reed and spat on Him; and bowing the knee, they worshiped Him.
  • Again and again they struck him on the head with a staff and spit on him. Falling on their knees, they paid homage to him.
  • And when they had mocked Him, they took the purple off Him, put His own clothes on Him, and led Him out to crucify Him.
  • And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him out to crucify him.
  • The King on a Cross

Then they compelled a certain man, Simon a Cyrenian, the father of Alexander and Rufus, as he was coming out of the country and passing by, to bear His cross.
  • The Crucifixion of Jesus

A certain man from Cyrene, Simon, the father of Alexander and Rufus, was passing by on his way in from the country, and they forced him to carry the cross.
  • And they brought Him to the place Golgotha, which is translated, Place of a Skull.
  • They brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means “the place of the skull”).
  • Then they gave Him wine mingled with myrrh to drink, but He did not take it.
  • Then they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it.
  • And when they crucified Him, they divided His garments, casting lots for them to determine what every man should take.
  • And they crucified him. Dividing up his clothes, they cast lots to see what each would get.
  • Now it was the third hour, and they crucified Him.
  • It was nine in the morning when they crucified him.
  • And the inscription of His [d]accusation was written above:
    THE KING OF THE JEWS.
  • The written notice of the charge against him read: the king of the jews.
  • With Him they also crucified two robbers, one on His right and the other on His left.
  • They crucified two rebels with him, one on his right and one on his left.
