New King James Version

Darby Bible Translation

  • The Plot to Kill Jesus

    Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread drew near, which is called Passover.
  • The Plot to Kill Jesus

    Now the feast of unleavened bread, which [is] called the passover, drew nigh,
  • And the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might kill Him, for they feared the people.
  • and the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might kill him; for they feared the people.
  • Then Satan entered Judas, surnamed Iscariot, who was numbered among the twelve.
  • And Satan entered into Judas, who was surnamed Iscariote, being of the number of the twelve.
  • So he went his way and conferred with the chief priests and captains, how he might betray Him to them.
  • And he went away and spoke with the chief priests and captains as to how he should deliver him up to them.
  • And they were glad, and agreed to give him money.
  • And they were rejoiced, and agreed to give him money.
  • So he promised and sought opportunity to betray Him to them in the absence of the multitude.
  • And he came to an agreement to do it, and sought an opportunity to deliver him up to them away from the crowd.
  • Jesus and His Disciples Prepare the Passover

    Then came the Day of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover must be [a]killed.
  • The Last Supper

    And the day of unleavened bread came, in which the passover was to be killed.
  • And He sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat.”
  • And he sent Peter and John, saying, Go and prepare the passover for us, that we may eat [it].
  • So they said to Him, “Where do You want us to prepare?”
  • But they said to him, Where wilt thou that we prepare [it]?
  • And He said to them, “Behold, when you have entered the city, a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him into the house which he enters.
  • And he said to them, Behold, as ye enter into the city a man will meet you, carrying an earthen pitcher of water; follow him into the house where he goes in;
  • Then you shall say to the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says to you, “Where is the guest room where I may eat the Passover with My disciples?” ’
  • and ye shall say to the master of the house, The Teacher says to thee, Where is the guest-chamber where I may eat the passover with my disciples?
  • Then he will show you a large, furnished upper room; there make ready.”
  • And *he* will shew you a large upper room furnished: there make ready.
  • So they went and found it just as He had said to them, and they prepared the Passover.
  • And having gone they found it as he had said to them; and they prepared the passover.
  • Jesus Institutes the Lord’s Supper

    When the hour had come, He sat down, and the [b]twelve apostles with Him.
  • The Lord's Supper Instituted

    And when the hour was come, he placed himself at table, and the [twelve] apostles with him.
  • Then He said to them, “With fervent desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer;
  • And he said to them, With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer.
  • for I say to you, I will no longer eat of it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.”
  • For I say unto you, that I will not eat any more at all of it until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God.
  • Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, “Take this and divide it among yourselves;
  • And having received a cup, when he had given thanks he said, Take this and divide it among yourselves.
  • for I say to you, [c]I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”
  • For I say unto you, that I will not drink at all of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God come.
  • And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.”
  • And having taken a loaf, when he had given thanks, he broke [it], and gave [it] to them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.
  • Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you.
  • In like manner also the cup, after having supped, saying, This cup [is] the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.
  • But behold, the hand of My betrayer is with Me on the table.
  • Moreover, behold, the hand of him that delivers me up [is] with me on the table;
  • And truly the Son of Man goes as it has been determined, but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed!”
  • and the Son of man indeed goes as it is determined, but woe unto that man by whom he is delivered up.
  • Then they began to question among themselves, which of them it was who would do this thing.
  • And *they* began to question together among themselves who then it could be of them who was about to do this.
  • The Disciples Argue About Greatness

    Now there was also a dispute among them, as to which of them should be considered the greatest.
  • Who is the Greatest?

    And there was also a strife among them which of them should be held to be [the] greatest.
  • And He said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those who exercise authority over them are called ‘benefactors.’
  • And he said to them, The kings of the nations rule over them, and they that exercise authority over them are called benefactors.
  • But not so among you; on the contrary, he who is greatest among you, let him be as the younger, and he who governs as he who serves.
  • But *ye* [shall] not [be] thus; but let the greater among you be as the younger, and the leader as he that serves.
  • For who is greater, he who sits at the table, or he who serves? Is it not he who sits at the table? Yet I am among you as the One who serves.
  • For which [is] greater, he that is at table or he that serves? [Is] not he that is at table? But *I* am in the midst of you as the one that serves.
  • “But you are those who have continued with Me in My trials.
  • But *ye* are they who have persevered with me in my temptations.
  • And I bestow upon you a kingdom, just as My Father bestowed one upon Me,
  • And *I* appoint unto you, as my Father has appointed unto me, a kingdom,
  • that you may eat and drink at My table in My kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.”
  • that ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
  • Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial

    [d]And the Lord said, “Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat.
  • Jesus Predicts Peter's Denial

    And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has demanded to have you, to sift [you] as wheat;
  • But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren.”
  • but *I* have besought for thee that thy faith fail not; and *thou*, when once thou hast been restored, confirm thy brethren.
  • But he said to Him, “Lord, I am ready to go with You, both to prison and to death.”
  • And he said to him, Lord, with thee I am ready to go both to prison and to death.
  • Then He said, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster shall not crow this day before you will deny three times that you know Me.”
  • And he said, I tell thee, Peter, [the] cock shall not crow to-day before that thou shalt thrice deny that thou knowest me.
  • Supplies for the Road

    And He said to them, “When I sent you without money bag, knapsack, and sandals, did you lack anything?”
    So they said, “Nothing.”
  • And he said to them, When I sent you without purse and scrip and sandals, did ye lack anything? And they said, Nothing.
  • Then He said to them, “But now, he who has a money bag, let him take it, and likewise a knapsack; and he who has no sword, let him sell his garment and buy one.
  • He said therefore to them, But now he that has a purse let him take [it], in like manner also a scrip, and he that has none let him sell his garment and buy a sword;
  • For I say to you that this which is written must still be [e]accomplished in Me: ‘And He was numbered with the transgressors.’ For the things concerning Me have an end.”
  • for I say unto you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me, And he was reckoned with [the] lawless: for also the things concerning me have an end.
  • So they said, “Lord, look, here are two swords.”
    And He said to them, “It is enough.”
  • And they said, Lord, behold here are two swords. And he said to them, It is enough.
  • The Prayer in the Garden

    Coming out, He went to the Mount of Olives, as He was accustomed, and His disciples also followed Him.
  • Jesus Prays on the Mount of Olives

    And going forth he went according to his custom to the mount of Olives, and the disciples also followed him.
  • When He came to the place, He said to them, “Pray that you may not enter into temptation.”
  • And when he was at the place he said to them, Pray that ye enter not into temptation.
  • And He was withdrawn from them about a stone’s throw, and He knelt down and prayed,
  • And he was withdrawn from them about a stone's throw, and having knelt down he prayed,
  • saying, “Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done.”
  • saying, Father, if thou wilt remove this cup from me: -- but then, not my will, but thine be done.
  • [f]Then an angel appeared to Him from heaven, strengthening Him.
  • And an angel appeared to him from heaven strengthening him.
  • And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly. Then His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.
  • And being in conflict he prayed more intently. And his sweat became as great drops of blood, falling down upon the earth.
  • When He rose up from prayer, and had come to His disciples, He found them sleeping from sorrow.
  • And rising up from his prayer, coming to the disciples, he found them sleeping from grief.
  • Then He said to them, “Why do you sleep? Rise and pray, lest you enter into temptation.”
  • And he said to them, Why sleep ye? rise up and pray that ye enter not into temptation.
  • Betrayal and Arrest in Gethsemane

    And while He was still speaking, behold, a multitude; and he who was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them and drew near to Jesus to kiss Him.
  • Jesus' Betrayal and Arrest

    As he was yet speaking, behold, a crowd, and he that was called Judas, one of the twelve, went on before them, and drew near to Jesus to kiss him.
  • But Jesus said to him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?”
  • And Jesus said to him, Judas, deliverest thou up the Son of man with a kiss?
  • When those around Him saw what was going to happen, they said to Him, “Lord, shall we strike with the sword?”
  • And they who were around him, seeing what was going to follow, said [to him], Lord, shall we smite with [the] sword?
  • And one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear.
  • And a certain one from among them smote the bondman of the high priest and took off his right ear.
  • But Jesus answered and said, “Permit even this.” And He touched his ear and healed him.
  • And Jesus answering said, Suffer thus far; and having touched his ear, he healed him.
  • Then Jesus said to the chief priests, captains of the temple, and the elders who had come to Him, “Have you come out, as against a robber, with swords and clubs?
  • And Jesus said to the chief priests and captains of the temple and elders, who were come against him, Have ye come out as against a robber with swords and sticks?
  • When I was with you daily in the temple, you did not try to seize Me. But this is your hour, and the power of darkness.”
  • When I was day by day with you in the temple ye did not stretch out your hands against me; but this is your hour and the power of darkness.
  • Peter Denies Jesus, and Weeps Bitterly

    Having arrested Him, they led Him and brought Him into the high priest’s house. But Peter followed at a distance.
  • Peter Denies Jesus

    And having laid hold on him, they led him [away], and they led [him] into the house of the high priest. And Peter followed afar off.
  • Now when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat among them.
  • And they having lit a fire in the midst of the court and sat down together, Peter sat among them.
  • And a certain servant girl, seeing him as he sat by the fire, looked intently at him and said, “This man was also with Him.”
  • And a certain maid, having seen him sitting by the light, and having fixed her eyes upon him, said, And this [man] was with him.
  • But he denied [g]Him, saying, “Woman, I do not know Him.”
  • But he denied [him], saying, Woman, I do not know him.
  • And after a little while another saw him and said, “You also are of them.”
    But Peter said, “Man, I am not!”
  • And after a short time another seeing him said, And *thou* art of them. But Peter said, Man, I am not.
  • Then after about an hour had passed, another confidently affirmed, saying, “Surely this fellow also was with Him, for he is a Galilean.”
  • And after the lapse of about one hour another stoutly maintained it, saying, In truth this [man] also was with him, for also he is a Galilaean.
  • But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are saying!”
    Immediately, while he was still speaking, [h]the rooster crowed.
  • And Peter said, Man, I know not what thou sayest. And immediately, while he was yet speaking, [the] cock crew.
  • And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had said to him, “Before the rooster [i]crows, you will deny Me three times.”
  • And the Lord, turning round, looked at Peter; and Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he said to him, Before [the] cock crow thou shalt deny me thrice.
  • So Peter went out and wept bitterly.
  • And Peter, going forth without, wept bitterly.
  • Jesus Mocked and Beaten

    Now the men who held Jesus mocked Him and beat Him.
  • The Soldiers Mock Jesus

    And the men who held him mocked him, beating [him];
  • [j]And having blindfolded Him, they struck Him on the face and asked Him, saying, “Prophesy! Who is the one who struck You?”
  • and covering him up, asked him saying, Prophesy, who is it that struck thee?
  • And many other things they blasphemously spoke against Him.
  • And they said many other injurious things to him.
  • Jesus Faces the Sanhedrin

    As soon as it was day, the elders of the people, both chief priests and scribes, came together and led Him into their council, saying,
  • Jesus Before the Council

    And when it was day, the elderhood of the people, both [the] chief priests and scribes, were gathered together, and led him into their council, saying,
  • “If You are the Christ, tell us.”
    But He said to them, “If I tell you, you will by no means believe.
  • If *thou* art the Christ, tell us. And he said to them, If I tell you, ye will not at all believe;
  • And if I [k]also ask you, you will by no means answer [l]Me or let Me go.
  • and if I should ask [you], ye would not answer me at all, nor let me go;
  • Hereafter the Son of Man will sit on the right hand of the power of God.”
  • but henceforth shall the Son of man be sitting on the right hand of the power of God.
  • Then they all said, “Are You then the Son of God?”
    So He said to them, “You rightly say that I am.”
  • And they all said, *Thou* then art the Son of God? And he said to them, *Ye* say that I am.
  • And they said, “What further testimony do we need? For we have heard it ourselves from His own mouth.”
  • And they said, What need have we any more of witness, for we have heard ourselves out of his mouth?
