The New Birth
There was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.

This man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, “Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him.”
Der suchte Jesus bei Nacht auf und sagte zu ihm: Rabbi, wir wissen, du bist ein Lehrer, von Gott gekommen; denn niemand kann die Zeichen tun, die du tust, wenn nicht Gott mit ihm ist.
Jesus antwortete ihm: Amen, amen, ich sage dir: Wenn jemand nicht von oben geboren wird, kann er das Reich Gottes nicht sehen.
Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?”
Nikodemus entgegnete ihm: Wie kann ein Mensch, der schon alt ist, geboren werden? Kann er etwa in den Schoß seiner Mutter zurückkehren und noch einmal geboren werden?
Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.
Jesus antwortete: Amen, amen, ich sage dir: Wenn jemand nicht aus dem Wasser und dem Geist geboren wird, kann er nicht in das Reich Gottes kommen.
That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
Was aus dem Fleisch geboren ist, das ist Fleisch; was aber aus dem Geist geboren ist, das ist Geist.
Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’
Wundere dich nicht, dass ich dir sagte: Ihr müsst von oben geboren werden.
The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.”
Der Wind weht, wo er will; du hörst sein Brausen, weißt aber nicht, woher er kommt und wohin er geht. So ist es mit jedem, der aus dem Geist geboren ist.
Nicodemus answered and said to Him, “How can these things be?”
Nikodemus erwiderte ihm: Wie kann das geschehen?
Jesus answered and said to him, “Are you the teacher of Israel, and do not know these things?
Jesus antwortete: Du bist der Lehrer Israels und verstehst das nicht?
Most assuredly, I say to you, We speak what We know and testify what We have seen, and you do not receive Our witness.
Amen, amen, ich sage dir: Was wir wissen, davon reden wir, und was wir gesehen haben, das bezeugen wir und doch nehmt ihr unser Zeugnis nicht an.
If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things?
Wenn ich zu euch über irdische Dinge gesprochen habe und ihr nicht glaubt, wie werdet ihr glauben, wenn ich zu euch über himmlische Dinge spreche?
Und niemand ist in den Himmel hinaufgestiegen außer dem, der vom Himmel herabgestiegen ist: der Menschensohn.
And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up,
Und wie Mose die Schlange in der Wüste erhöht hat, so muss der Menschensohn erhöht werden,
damit jeder, der glaubt, in ihm ewiges Leben hat.
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
Denn Gott hat die Welt so sehr geliebt, dass er seinen einzigen Sohn hingab, damit jeder, der an ihn glaubt, nicht verloren geht, sondern ewiges Leben hat.
For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
Denn Gott hat seinen Sohn nicht in die Welt gesandt, damit er die Welt richtet, sondern damit die Welt durch ihn gerettet wird.
“He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
Wer an ihn glaubt, wird nicht gerichtet; wer nicht glaubt, ist schon gerichtet, weil er nicht an den Namen des einzigen Sohnes Gottes geglaubt hat.
And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
Denn darin besteht das Gericht: Das Licht kam in die Welt, doch die Menschen liebten die Finsternis mehr als das Licht; denn ihre Taten waren böse.
For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed.
Jeder, der Böses tut, hasst das Licht und kommt nicht zum Licht, damit seine Taten nicht aufgedeckt werden.
But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God.”
Wer aber die Wahrheit tut, kommt zum Licht, damit offenbar wird, dass seine Taten in Gott vollbracht sind.
John the Baptist Exalts Christ
After these things Jesus and His disciples came into the land of Judea, and there He remained with them and baptized.

Darauf kam Jesus mit seinen Jüngern nach Judäa. Dort hielt er sich mit ihnen auf und taufte.
Now John also was baptizing in Aenon near Salim, because there was much water there. And they came and were baptized.
Aber auch Johannes taufte damals, und zwar in Änon bei Salim, weil dort viel Wasser war; und die Leute kamen und ließen sich taufen.
For John had not yet been thrown into prison.
Johannes war nämlich noch nicht ins Gefängnis geworfen worden.
Then there arose a dispute between some of John’s disciples and the Jews about purification.
Da kam es zwischen den Jüngern des Johannes und einem Juden zum Streit über die Frage der Reinigung.
And they came to John and said to him, “Rabbi, He who was with you beyond the Jordan, to whom you have testified — behold, He is baptizing, and all are coming to Him!”
Sie kamen zu Johannes und sagten zu ihm: Rabbi, der Mann, der auf der anderen Seite des Jordan bei dir war und für den du Zeugnis abgelegt hast, der tauft jetzt und alle kommen zu ihm.
John answered and said, “A man can receive nothing unless it has been given to him from heaven.
Johannes antwortete: Kein Mensch kann etwas nehmen, wenn es ihm nicht vom Himmel gegeben ist.
You yourselves bear me witness, that I said, ‘I am not the Christ,’ but, ‘I have been sent before Him.’
Ihr selbst seid meine Zeugen, dass ich gesagt habe: Ich bin nicht der Christus, sondern nur vor ihm hergesandt.
He who has the bride is the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice. Therefore this joy of mine is fulfilled.
Wer die Braut hat, ist der Bräutigam; der Freund des Bräutigams aber, der dabeisteht und ihn hört, ist voller Freude über die Stimme des Bräutigams. Diese Freude hat sich nun bei mir vollendet.
He who comes from above is above all; he who is of the earth is earthly and speaks of the earth. He who comes from heaven is above all.
Er, der von oben kommt, steht über allen; wer von der Erde stammt, ist irdisch und redet irdisch. Er, der aus dem Himmel kommt, steht über allen.
And what He has seen and heard, that He testifies; and no one receives His testimony.
Was er gesehen und gehört hat, bezeugt er, doch niemand nimmt sein Zeugnis an.
He who has received His testimony has certified that God is true.
Wer sein Zeugnis annimmt, hat besiegelt, dass Gott wahrhaftig ist.
For He whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God does not give the Spirit by measure.
Denn der, den Gott gesandt hat, spricht die Worte Gottes; denn ohne Maß gibt er den Geist.
The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into His hand.
Der Vater liebt den Sohn und hat alles in seine Hand gegeben.
