Coming of the Holy Spirit

When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all [a]with one accord in one place.

The Holy Spirit Comes

On the day of Pentecosta all the believers were meeting together in one place.

And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.

Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting.

Then there appeared to them [b]divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them.

Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them.

4

And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages,b as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability.

The Crowd’s Response

And there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men, from every nation under heaven.

At that time there were devout Jews from every nation living in Jerusalem.

And when this sound occurred, the multitude came together, and were confused, because everyone heard them speak in his own language.

When they heard the loud noise, everyone came running, and they were bewildered to hear their own languages being spoken by the believers.

Then they were all amazed and marveled, saying to one another, “Look, are not all these who speak Galileans?

They were completely amazed. “How can this be?” they exclaimed. “These people are all from Galilee,

And how is it that we hear, each in our own [c]language in which we were born?

and yet we hear them speaking in our own native languages!

Parthians and Medes and Elamites, those dwelling in Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,

Here we are — Parthians, Medes, Elamites, people from Mesopotamia, Judea, Cappadocia, Pontus, the province of Asia,

Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya adjoining Cyrene, visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes,

Phrygia, Pamphylia, Egypt, and the areas of Libya around Cyrene, visitors from Rome

Cretans and [d]Arabs — we hear them speaking in our own tongues the wonderful works of God.”

(both Jews and converts to Judaism), Cretans, and Arabs. And we all hear these people speaking in our own languages about the wonderful things God has done!”

So they were all amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “Whatever could this mean?”

They stood there amazed and perplexed. “What can this mean?” they asked each other.

13

Others mocking said, “They are full of new wine.”

13

But others in the crowd ridiculed them, saying, “They’re just drunk, that’s all!”

Peter’s Sermon

But Peter, standing up with the eleven, raised his voice and said to them, “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and heed my words.

Peter Preaches to the Crowd

Then Peter stepped forward with the eleven other apostles and shouted to the crowd, “Listen carefully, all of you, fellow Jews and residents of Jerusalem! Make no mistake about this.

15

For these are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only [e]the third hour of the day.

These people are not drunk, as some of you are assuming. Nine o’clock in the morning is much too early for that.

16

But this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:

No, what you see was predicted long ago by the prophet Joel:

17

‘And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God,
That I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh;
Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
Your young men shall see visions,
Your old men shall dream dreams.

17

‘In the last days,’ God says,
‘I will pour out my Spirit upon all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy.
Your young men will see visions,
and your old men will dream dreams.

18

And on My menservants and on My maidservants
I will pour out My Spirit in those days;
And they shall prophesy.

18

In those days I will pour out my Spirit
even on my servants — men and women alike —
and they will prophesy.

19

I will show wonders in heaven above
And signs in the earth beneath:
Blood and fire and vapor of smoke.

19

And I will cause wonders in the heavens above
and signs on the earth below —
blood and fire and clouds of smoke.

20

The sun shall be turned into darkness,
And the moon into blood,
Before the coming of the great and awesome day of the Lord.

20

The sun will become dark,
and the moon will turn blood red
before that great and glorious day of the LORD arrives.

21

And it shall come to pass
That whoever calls on the name of the Lord
Shall be saved.’

But everyone who calls on the name of the LORD
will be saved.’c

“Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a Man attested by God to you by miracles, wonders, and signs which God did through Him in your midst, as you yourselves also know —

22

“People of Israel, listen! God publicly endorsed Jesus the Nazarened by doing powerful miracles, wonders, and signs through him, as you well know.

23

Him, being delivered by the determined purpose and foreknowledge of God, you [f]have taken by lawless hands, have crucified, and put to death;

23

But God knew what would happen, and his prearranged plan was carried out when Jesus was betrayed. With the help of lawless Gentiles, you nailed him to a cross and killed him.

24

whom God raised up, having [g]loosed the [h]pains of death, because it was not possible that He should be held by it.

24

But God released him from the horrors of death and raised him back to life, for death could not keep him in its grip.

25

For David says concerning Him:
‘I foresaw the Lord always before my face,
For He is at my right hand, that I may not be shaken.

25

King David said this about him:
‘I see that the LORD is always with me.
I will not be shaken, for he is right beside me.

26

Therefore my heart rejoiced, and my tongue was glad;
Moreover my flesh also will rest in hope.

26

No wonder my heart is glad,
and my tongue shouts his praises!
My body rests in hope.

27

For You will not leave my soul in Hades,
Nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption.

27

For you will not leave my soul among the deade
or allow your Holy One to rot in the grave.

28

You have made known to me the ways of life;
You will make me full of joy in Your presence.’

28

You have shown me the way of life,
and you will fill me with the joy of your presence.’f

29

“Men and brethren, let me speak freely to you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.

29

“Dear brothers, think about this! You can be sure that the patriarch David wasn’t referring to himself, for he died and was buried, and his tomb is still here among us.

30

Therefore, being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that of the fruit of his body, [i]according to the flesh, He would raise up the Christ to sit on his throne,

But he was a prophet, and he knew God had promised with an oath that one of David’s own descendants would sit on his throne.

31

he, foreseeing this, spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ, that His soul was not left in Hades, nor did His flesh see corruption.

31

David was looking into the future and speaking of the Messiah’s resurrection. He was saying that God would not leave him among the dead or allow his body to rot in the grave.

32

This Jesus God has raised up, of which we are all witnesses.

“God raised Jesus from the dead, and we are all witnesses of this.

33

Therefore being exalted [j]to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He poured out this which you now see and hear.

33

Now he is exalted to the place of highest honor in heaven, at God’s right hand. And the Father, as he had promised, gave him the Holy Spirit to pour out upon us, just as you see and hear today.

“For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he says himself:
‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at My right hand,

For David himself never ascended into heaven, yet he said,
‘The LORD said to my Lord,
“Sit in the place of honor at my right hand

35

Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.” ’

35

until I humble your enemies,
making them a footstool under your feet.”’g

36

“Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.”

36

“So let everyone in Israel know for certain that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, to be both Lord and Messiah!”

37

Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?”

37

Peter’s words pierced their hearts, and they said to him and to the other apostles, “Brothers, what should we do?”

38

Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the [k]remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

38

Peter replied, “Each of you must repent of your sins and turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

39

For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.”

39

This promise is to you, to your children, and to those far awayh — all who have been called by the Lord our God.”

40

A Vital Church Grows

And with many other words he testified and exhorted them, saying, “Be saved from this [l]perverse generation.”

40

Then Peter continued preaching for a long time, strongly urging all his listeners, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation!”

41

Then those who [m]gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them.

41

Those who believed what Peter said were baptized and added to the church that day — about 3,000 in all.

42

And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ [n]doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers.

42

The Believers Form a Community

All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supperi), and to prayer.

43

Then fear came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles.

43

A deep sense of awe came over them all, and the apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders.

44

Now all who believed were together, and had all things in common,

44

And all the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had.

45

and [o]sold their possessions and goods, and divided[p] them among all, as anyone had need.

45

They sold their property and possessions and shared the money with those in need.

46

So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart,

46

They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosityj —

47

praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added [q]to the church daily those who were being saved.

47

all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved.
