    God’s Judgment Defended

    What advantage then has the Jew, or what is the profit of circumcision?

    Was ist nun der Vorzug der Juden, was der Nutzen der Beschneidung?

    Much in every way! Chiefly because to them were committed the [a]oracles of God.

    Er ist groß in jeder Hinsicht. Vor allem: Ihnen sind die Worte Gottes anvertraut.

    For what if some did not believe? Will their unbelief make the faithfulness of God without effect?

    Denn was macht das schon: Wenn einige untreu wurden, wird dann etwa ihre Untreue die Treue Gottes aufheben?

    Certainly not! Indeed, let God be [b]true but every man a liar. As it is written:
    “That You may be justified in Your words,
    And may overcome when You are judged.”

    Keineswegs! Gott soll sich vielmehr als wahrhaftig erweisen, jeder Mensch aber als Lügner, wie geschrieben steht: Damit du recht behältst mit deinen Worten und den Sieg davonträgst, wenn man mit dir rechtet.

    But if our unrighteousness demonstrates the righteousness of God, what shall we say? Is God unjust who inflicts wrath? (I speak as a man.)

    Wenn aber unsere Ungerechtigkeit die Gerechtigkeit Gottes bestätigt, was sagen wir dann? Ist Gott — ich frage sehr menschlich — nicht ungerecht, wenn er seinen Zorn verhängt?

    Certainly not! For then how will God judge the world?

    Keineswegs! Denn wie könnte Gott die Welt sonst richten?

    For if the truth of God has increased through my lie to His glory, why am I also still judged as a sinner?

    Wenn aber die Wahrhaftigkeit Gottes sich durch meine Unwahrhaftigkeit als groß erwiesen hat und so Gott verherrlicht wird, warum werde ich dann als Sünder gerichtet?

    And why not say, “Let us do evil that good may come”? — as we are slanderously reported and as some affirm that we say. Their [c]condemnation is just.

    Und gilt am Ende das, womit man uns verleumdet und was einige uns in den Mund legen: Lasst uns Böses tun, damit Gutes entsteht? Diese Leute werden mit Recht verurteilt.

    All Have Sinned

    What then? Are we better than they? Not at all. For we have previously charged both Jews and Greeks that they are all under sin.

    Was heißt das nun? Sind wir im Vorteil? Nicht unbedingt. Denn wir haben vorher die Anklage erhoben, dass alle, Juden wie Griechen, unter der Herrschaft der Sünde stehen,

    As it is written:
    “There is none righteous, no, not one;

    wie geschrieben steht: Es gibt keinen, der gerecht ist, auch nicht einen;

    There is none who understands;
    There is none who seeks after God.

    es gibt keinen Verständigen, keinen, der Gott sucht.
  • 12
    They have all turned aside;
    They have together become unprofitable;
    There is none who does good, no, not one.”

    Alle sind abtrünnig geworden, alle miteinander taugen nichts. Es gibt keinen, der Gutes tut, auch nicht einen Einzigen.

    “Their throat is an open [d]tomb;
    With their tongues they have practiced deceit”;
    “The poison of asps is under their lips”;

    Ihre Kehle ist ein offenes Grab, mit ihrer Zunge betrügen sie; Schlangengift ist auf ihren Lippen.

    “Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness.”

    Ihr Mund ist voll Fluch und Gehässigkeit.

    “Their feet are swift to shed blood;
  • 15
    Schnell sind ihre Füße, Blut zu vergießen;

    Destruction and misery are in their ways;
  • 16
    Verderben und Unheil sind auf ihren Wegen

    And the way of peace they have not known.”

    und den Weg des Friedens kennen sie nicht.

    “There is no fear of God before their eyes.”

    Die Gottesfurcht steht ihnen nicht vor Augen.

    Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become [e]guilty before God.

    Wir wissen aber: Was das Gesetz sagt, sagt es denen, die unter dem Gesetz leben, damit jeder Mund gestopft und die ganze Welt vor Gott schuldig wird.

    Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin.

    Denn aus Werken des Gesetzes wird niemand vor ihm gerecht werden; denn durch das Gesetz kommt es nur zur Erkenntnis der Sünde.

    God’s Righteousness Through Faith

    But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets,

    Jetzt aber ist unabhängig vom Gesetz die Gerechtigkeit Gottes offenbart worden, bezeugt vom Gesetz und von den Propheten:

    even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all [f]and on all who believe. For there is no difference;

    die Gerechtigkeit Gottes durch Glauben an Jesus Christus, offenbart für alle, die glauben. Denn es gibt keinen Unterschied:

    for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

    Alle haben ja gesündigt und die Herrlichkeit Gottes verloren.

    being justified [g]freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,

    Umsonst werden sie gerecht, dank seiner Gnade, durch die Erlösung in Christus Jesus.

    whom God set forth as a [h]propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed,

    Ihn hat Gott aufgerichtet als Sühnemal — wirksam durch Glauben — in seinem Blut, zum Erweis seiner Gerechtigkeit durch die Vergebung der Sünden, die früher,

    to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.

    in der Zeit der Geduld Gottes, begangen wurden; ja zum Erweis seiner Gerechtigkeit in der gegenwärtigen Zeit, um zu zeigen: Er selbst ist gerecht und macht den gerecht, der aus Glauben an Jesus lebt.

    Boasting Excluded

    Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? Of works? No, but by the law of faith.

    Wo bleibt da noch das Rühmen? Es ist ausgeschlossen. Durch welches Gesetz? Durch das der Werke? Nein, durch das Gesetz des Glaubens.

    Therefore we conclude that a man is [i]justified by faith apart from the deeds of the law.

    Denn wir sind der Überzeugung, dass der Mensch gerecht wird durch Glauben, unabhängig von Werken des Gesetzes.

    Or is He the God of the Jews only? Is He not also the God of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles also,

    Oder ist Gott nur der Gott der Juden, nicht auch der Heiden? Ja, auch der Heiden,

    since there is one God who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith.

    da doch gilt: Gott ist der Eine. Er wird aufgrund des Glaubens sowohl die Beschnittenen wie die Unbeschnittenen gerecht machen.

    Do we then make void the law through faith? Certainly not! On the contrary, we establish the law.

    Setzen wir also durch den Glauben das Gesetz außer Kraft? Im Gegenteil, wir richten das Gesetz auf.
