Paul Urges Forgiveness

But I determined this within myself, that I would not come again to you in sorrow.

1

А я постановив у собі те, щоб до вас не прийти знов у смутку.

For if I make you sorrowful, then who is he who makes me glad but the one who is made sorrowful by me?

Бо коли я засму́чую вас, то хто той, хто потішить мене, як не той, кого я засмути́в?

Forgive the Offender

And I wrote this very thing to you, lest, when I came, I should have sorrow over those from whom I ought to have joy, having confidence in you all that my joy is the joy of you all.

І це саме писав я до вас, щоб, прийшовши, я смутку не мав би від тих, що від них мені тішитися нале́жало, про всіх вас бувши певний, що радість моя — то радість усіх вас!

For out of much [a]affliction and anguish of heart I wrote to you, with many tears, not that you should be grieved, but that you might know the love which I have so abundantly for you.

Бо з великого горя та з ту́ги сердечної я написав вам з рясни́ми слізьми́ не на те, щоб були ви засму́чені, але щоб пізнали любов, що в мене її пребагато до вас!

But if anyone has caused grief, he has not grieved me, but all of you to some extent — not to be too severe.

А як хто засмутив, не мене засмутив, а поча́сти — щоб не пригніти́ти — і всіх вас.

This punishment which was inflicted by the majority is sufficient for such a man,

До́сить такому кара́ння того, що від багатьох,

so that, on the contrary, you ought rather to forgive and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one be swallowed up with too much sorrow.

через те навпаки́, — краще простити й поті́шити, щоб смуток великий його не поже́р.

Therefore I urge you to reaffirm your love to him.

Через те вас благаю: зміцніть до нього любов!

For to this end I also wrote, that I might put you to the test, whether you are obedient in all things.

Бо на це я й писав, щоб пізнати ваш до́свід, чи в усім ви слухня́ні.

Now whom you forgive anything, I also forgive. For [b]if indeed I have forgiven anything, I have forgiven that one for your sakes in the presence of Christ,

А кому ви прощаєте що, тому й я; бо й я, як простив що кому, то кому я простив, зробив те через вас від Особи Христа,

lest Satan should take advantage of us; for we are not ignorant of his devices.

щоб нас сатана не перехитрував, — відо́мі бо нам його задуми!

Triumph in Christ

Furthermore, when I came to Troas to preach Christ’s gospel, and a [c]door was opened to me by the Lord,

А коли я прийшов до Троа́ди звіщати Христову Єва́нгелію, і були двері для мене відчинені в Господі,

I had no rest in my spirit, because I did not find Titus my brother; but taking my leave of them, I departed for Macedonia.

не мав я споко́ю для духа свого, бо я не знайшов був свого брата Тита; але, попрощавшися з ними, я пішов в Македонію.

Now thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and through us [d]diffuses the fragrance of His knowledge in every place.

А Богові подяка, що Він постійно чинить нас переможцями в Христі, і запа́шність знання́ про Себе через нас виявляє на всякому місці!

For we are to God the fragrance of Christ among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing.

Ми бо для Бога Христова запа́шність серед тих, хто спасається, і тих, які гинуть,

To the one we are the aroma of death leading to death, and to the other the aroma of life leading to life. And who is sufficient for these things?

для одних бо смертельна запа́шність на смерть, а для других запа́шність життє́ва в життя. І хто здатен на це?

For we are not, as [e]so many, peddling[f] the word of God; but as of sincerity, but as from God, we speak in the sight of God in Christ.

Бо ми не такі, як багато-хто, що Боже Слово фальшують, але ми провіщаємо, як із щирости, як від Бога, перед Богом, у Христі!
