that in a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded in the riches of their liberality.
Während sie durch große Not geprüft wurden, verwandelten sich ihre übergroße Freude und ihre tiefe Armut in den Reichtum ihrer selbstlosen Güte.
For I bear witness that according to their ability, yes, and beyond their ability, they were freely willing,

And not only as we had hoped, but they first gave themselves to the Lord, and then to us by the will of God.
Und über unsere Erwartung hinaus haben sie sich eingesetzt, zunächst für den Herrn, aber auch für uns, wie es Gottes Wille war.
So we urged Titus, that as he had begun, so he would also complete this grace in you as well.
Daraufhin ermutigten wir Titus, dieses Liebeswerk, das er früher bei euch begonnen hatte, nun auch zu vollenden.
But as you abound in everything — in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in all diligence, and in your love for us — see that you abound in this grace also.
Wie ihr aber an allem reich seid, an Glauben, Rede und Erkenntnis, an jedem Eifer und an der Liebe, die wir in euch begründet haben, so sollt ihr euch auch an diesem Liebeswerk mit reichlichen Spenden beteiligen.

Ich meine das nicht als strenge Weisung, aber ich gebe euch Gelegenheit, angesichts des Eifers anderer auch eure Liebe als echt zu erweisen.
For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich.
Denn ihr kennt die Gnade unseres Herrn Jesus Christus: Er, der reich war, wurde euretwegen arm, um euch durch seine Armut reich zu machen.
And in this I give advice: It is to your advantage not only to be doing what you began and were desiring to do a year ago;
Ich gebe euch nur einen Rat, der euch helfen soll; ihr habt ja schon voriges Jahr angefangen, etwas zu unternehmen, und zwar aus eigenem Wollen.
but now you also must complete the doing of it; that as there was a readiness to desire it, so there also may be a completion out of what you have.
Jetzt sollt ihr das Begonnene zu Ende führen, damit das Ergebnis dem guten Willen entspricht — je nach eurem Besitz.
For if there is first a willing mind, it is accepted according to what one has, and not according to what he does not have.
Wenn nämlich der gute Wille da ist, dann ist jeder willkommen mit dem, was er hat, und man fragt nicht nach dem, was er nicht hat.
For I do not mean that others should be eased and you burdened;
Denn es geht nicht darum, dass ihr in Not geratet, indem ihr anderen helft; es geht um einen Ausgleich.
but by an equality, that now at this time your abundance may supply their lack, that their abundance also may supply your lack — that there may be equality.
Im Augenblick soll euer Überfluss ihrem Mangel abhelfen, damit auch ihr Überfluss einmal eurem Mangel abhilft. So soll ein Ausgleich entstehen,
As it is written, “He who gathered much had nothing left over, and he who gathered little had no lack.”
wie es in der Schrift heißt: Wer viel gesammelt hatte, hatte nicht zu viel, und wer wenig, hatte nicht zu wenig.
Dank sei Gott, der den gleichen Eifer für euch auch Titus ins Herz gelegt hat!
For he not only accepted the exhortation, but being more diligent, he went to you of his own accord.
Denn Titus war mit meinem Vorschlag einverstanden und sein Eifer war so groß, dass er aus eigenem Entschluss gleich zu euch abreiste.
And we have sent with him the brother whose praise is in the gospel throughout all the churches,
Zusammen mit ihm haben wir den Bruder geschickt, der wegen seiner Verkündigung des Evangeliums in allen Gemeinden Anerkennung findet
and not only that, but who was also chosen by the churches to travel with us with this gift, which is administered by us to the glory of the Lord Himself and to show your ready mind,
und außerdem von den Gemeinden dazu bestimmt wurde, unser Reisegefährte zu sein, wenn wir diese Gnadengabe zur Ehre des Herrn und als Zeichen unseres guten Willens überbringen.
avoiding this: that anyone should blame us in this lavish gift which is administered by us —
Denn angesichts der großen Spende, die von uns überbracht werden soll, möchten wir vermeiden, dass man uns verdächtigt.
providing honorable things, not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of men.
Denn wir sind auf das Gute bedacht, nicht nur vor dem Herrn, sondern auch vor den Menschen.
And we have sent with them our brother whom we have often proved diligent in many things, but now much more diligent, because of the great confidence which we have in you.
Wir haben aber mit den beiden noch einen weiteren Bruder geschickt, dessen Eifer wir vielfach und bei vielen Gelegenheiten feststellen konnten und der sich in diesem Fall noch eifriger zeigt, weil er großes Vertrauen zu euch hat.
Was nun Titus angeht: Er ist mein Gefährte und mein Mitarbeiter, der für euch tätig ist; unsere anderen Brüder aber sind Abgesandte der Gemeinden und ein Abglanz Christi.
