Greeting

Paul and Timothy, bondservants of Jesus Christ,
To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, with the [a]bishops and deacons:

Diesen Brief schreiben Paulus und Timotheus, die Jesus Christus dienen, an alle in Philippi, die mit Jesus Christus verbunden sind und ganz zu Gott gehören, an die Leiter der Gemeinde und die Diakone.

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Wir wünschen euch Gnade und Frieden von Gott, unserem Vater, und von Jesus Christus, unserem Herrn.

Thankfulness and Prayer

I thank my God upon every remembrance of you,

Ich danke meinem Gott immer wieder, wenn ich an euch denke,

always in every prayer of mine making request for you all with joy,

und das tue ich in jedem meiner Gebete mit großer Freude.

for your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now,

Denn ihr habt euch vom ersten Tag an bis heute mit mir für die rettende Botschaft eingesetzt.

being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ;

Ich bin ganz sicher, dass Gott sein gutes Werk, das er bei euch begonnen hat, zu Ende führen wird, bis zu dem Tag, an dem Jesus Christus kommt.

just as it is right for me to think this of you all, because I have you in my heart, inasmuch as both in my chains and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel, you all are partakers with me of grace.

Es ist ja nicht erstaunlich, dass ich so von euch denke, denn ihr liegt mir ganz besonders am Herzen. Und auch wenn ich jetzt im Gefängnis bin und vor Gericht die Wahrheit der rettenden Botschaft verteidige und bezeuge — ihr alle habt Anteil an diesem Auftrag und an der Gnade, die Gott mir damit erweist.

For God is my witness, how greatly I long for you all with the affection of Jesus Christ.

Gott weiß, wie sehr ich mich nach euch allen sehne; liebe ich euch doch so, wie auch Jesus Christus euch liebt.

And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment,

Ich bete darum, dass eure Liebe immer reicher und tiefer wird und dass ihr immer mehr Einsicht und Verständnis erlangt.

that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ,

So lernt ihr entscheiden, wie ihr leben sollt, um an dem Tag, an dem Jesus Christus Gericht hält, untadelig und ohne Schuld vor euren Richter treten zu können.

being filled with the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.

Alles Gute, was Christus in einem von Schuld befreiten Leben schafft, wird dann bei euch zu finden sein. Und das alles zu Gottes Ehre und zu seinem Lob!

Christ Is Preached

But I want you to know, brethren, that the things which happened to me have actually turned out for the furtherance of the gospel,

Meine lieben Brüder und Schwestern! Ihr sollt wissen, dass meine Gefangenschaft die Ausbreitung der rettenden Botschaft nicht gehindert hat. Im Gegenteil!

so that it has become evident to the whole [b]palace guard, and to all the rest, that my chains are in Christ;

Allen meinen Bewachern und auch den übrigen Menschen, mit denen ich es hier zu tun habe, ist inzwischen klar geworden, dass ich nur deswegen eingesperrt bin, weil ich an Christus glaube.

and most of the brethren in the Lord, having become confident by my chains, are much more bold to speak the word without fear.

Außerdem haben durch meine Gefangenschaft die meisten Christen neuen Mut gewonnen und die Zuversicht, dass der Herr ihnen hilft. Furchtlos und ohne Scheu sagen sie jetzt Gottes Botschaft weiter.

Some indeed preach Christ even from envy and strife, and some also from goodwill:

Zwar verkünden manche nur deswegen die Botschaft von Christus, weil sie neidisch sind und mir eine erfolgreiche Missionsarbeit nicht gönnen; andere aber lassen sich von den besten Absichten leiten.

[c]The former preach Christ from selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing to add affliction to my chains;

Sie handeln aus Liebe zu mir, weil sie wissen, dass ich im Gefängnis bin, um für die rettende Botschaft einzutreten.

but the latter out of love, knowing that I am appointed for the defense of the gospel.

Die anderen aber reden von Jesus Christus nur aus Eigennutz. Sie meinen es nicht ehrlich und wollen mir noch zusätzlich Kummer bereiten.

What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is preached; and in this I rejoice, yes, and will rejoice.

Doch was macht das schon! Wichtig ist allein, dass die rettende Botschaft von Christus verbreitet wird; mag das nun mit Hintergedanken oder in ehrlicher Absicht geschehen. Wenn nur jeder erfährt, wer Jesus Christus ist! Darüber freue ich mich, und ich werde mich auch in Zukunft darüber freuen!

To Live Is Christ

For I know that this will turn out for my deliverance through your prayer and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ,

Weil ihr für mich betet und Jesus Christus mir durch seinen Geist beisteht, bin ich sicher, dass hier alles zum Besten für mich ausgehen wird.

according to my earnest expectation and hope that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ will be magnified in my body, whether by life or by death.

Ich hoffe inständig und bin zuversichtlich, dass ich während meiner Gefangenschaft nicht schwach werde und versage, sondern dass Christus wie bisher, so auch jetzt durch mich bekannt gemacht und geehrt wird, sei es durch mein Leben oder durch meinen Tod.

For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.

Denn Christus ist mein Leben und das Sterben für mich nur Gewinn.

But if I live on in the flesh, this will mean fruit from my labor; yet what I shall choose I [d]cannot tell.

Weil ich aber mehr für Christus erreichen kann, wenn ich am Leben bleibe, weiß ich nicht, was ich mir wünschen soll.

[e]For I am hard-pressed between the two, having a desire to depart and be with Christ, which is far better.

Ich bin hin- und hergerissen: Am liebsten würde ich schon jetzt sterben, um bei Christus zu sein. Das wäre das Allerbeste!

Nevertheless to remain in the flesh is more needful for you.

Andererseits habe ich bei euch noch eine wichtige Aufgabe zu erfüllen.

And being confident of this, I know that I shall remain and continue with you all for your progress and joy of faith,

Deshalb bin ich auch davon überzeugt, dass ich weiterleben werde und euch allen erhalten bleibe. Dann will ich euch helfen, damit euer Glaube wächst und eure Freude auf diese Weise noch größer wird.

that your rejoicing for me may be more abundant in Jesus Christ by my coming to you again.

Wenn ich erst wieder bei euch bin, werdet ihr noch mehr loben und danken können für alles, was Jesus Christus durch mich getan hat.

Striving and Suffering for Christ

Only let your conduct be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of your affairs, that you stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel,

Vor allem ist wichtig, dass ihr als ganze Gemeinde so lebt, wie es der rettenden Botschaft von Christus entspricht. Ob ich nun zu euch kommen kann und es mit eigenen Augen sehe oder ob ich nur davon höre — ich möchte, dass ihr alle durch Gottes Geist fest zusammensteht und einmütig für den Glauben kämpft, den diese Botschaft in euch geweckt hat.

and not in any way terrified by your adversaries, which is to them a proof of perdition, but [f]to you of salvation, and that from God.

Lasst euch auf keinen Fall von euren Gegnern einschüchtern! Euer Mut wird ihnen zeigen, dass sie verloren sind, ihr aber von Gott gerettet werdet.

For to you it has been granted on behalf of Christ, not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for His sake,

Ihr habt nicht nur das Vorrecht, an Christus zu glauben, ihr dürft sogar für ihn leiden.

having the same conflict which you saw in me and now hear is in me.

Damit kämpft ihr nun denselben Kampf wie ich. Und wie dieser Kampf aussieht, habt ihr ja früher selbst mit angesehen. Jetzt kann ich euch davon nur berichten.
