New King James Version

New Living Translation

  • God’s Commission to Joshua

After the death of Moses the servant of the Lord, it came to pass that the Lord spoke to Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ assistant, saying:
  • The LORD’s Charge to Joshua

After the death of Moses the LORD’s servant, the LORD spoke to Joshua son of Nun, Moses’ assistant. He said,
  • “Moses My servant is dead. Now therefore, arise, go over this Jordan, you and all this people, to the land which I am giving to them — the children of Israel.
  • “Moses my servant is dead. Therefore, the time has come for you to lead these people, the Israelites, across the Jordan River into the land I am giving them.
  • Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given you, as I said to Moses.
  • I promise you what I promised Moses: ‘Wherever you set foot, you will be on land I have given you —
  • From the wilderness and this Lebanon as far as the great river, the River Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and to the Great Sea toward the going down of the sun, shall be your territory.
  • from the Negev wilderness in the south to the Lebanon mountains in the north, from the Euphrates River in the east to the Mediterranean Seaa in the west, including all the land of the Hittites.’
  • No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life; as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not leave you nor forsake you.
  • No one will be able to stand against you as long as you live. For I will be with you as I was with Moses. I will not fail you or abandon you.
  • Be strong and of good courage, for to this people you shall [a]divide as an inheritance the land which I swore to their fathers to give them.
  • “Be strong and courageous, for you are the one who will lead these people to possess all the land I swore to their ancestors I would give them.
  • Only be strong and very courageous, that you may observe to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may [b]prosper wherever you go.
  • Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the instructions Moses gave you. Do not deviate from them, turning either to the right or to the left. Then you will be successful in everything you do.
  • This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you[c] shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.
  • Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do.
  • Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
  • This is my command — be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”
  • The Order to Cross the Jordan

Then Joshua commanded the officers of the people, saying,

  • Joshua’s Charge to the Israelites

Joshua then commanded the officers of Israel,
  • “Pass through the camp and command the people, saying, ‘Prepare provisions for yourselves, for within three days you will cross over this Jordan, to go in to possess the land which the Lord your God is giving you to possess.’ ”
  • “Go through the camp and tell the people to get their provisions ready. In three days you will cross the Jordan River and take possession of the land the LORD your God is giving you.”
  • And to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and half the tribe of Manasseh Joshua spoke, saying,
  • Then Joshua called together the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh. He told them,
  • “Remember the word which Moses the servant of the Lord commanded you, saying, ‘The Lord your God is giving you rest and is giving you this land.’
  • “Remember what Moses, the servant of the LORD, commanded you: ‘The LORD your God is giving you a place of rest. He has given you this land.’
  • Your wives, your little ones, and your livestock shall remain in the land which Moses gave you on this side of the Jordan. But you shall [d]pass before your brethren armed, all your mighty men of valor, and help them,
  • Your wives, children, and livestock may remain here in the land Moses assigned to you on the east side of the Jordan River. But your strong warriors, fully armed, must lead the other tribes across the Jordan to help them conquer their territory. Stay with them
  • until the Lord has given your brethren rest, as He gave you, and they also have taken possession of the land which the Lord your God is giving them. Then you shall return to the land of your possession and enjoy it, which Moses the Lord’s servant gave you on this side of the Jordan toward the sunrise.”
  • until the LORD gives them rest, as he has given you rest, and until they, too, possess the land the LORD your God is giving them. Only then may you return and settle here on the east side of the Jordan River in the land that Moses, the servant of the LORD, assigned to you.”
  • So they answered Joshua, saying, “All that you command us we will do, and wherever you send us we will go.
  • They answered Joshua, “We will do whatever you command us, and we will go wherever you send us.
  • Just as we heeded Moses in all things, so we will heed you. Only the Lord your God be with you, as He was with Moses.
  • We will obey you just as we obeyed Moses. And may the LORD your God be with you as he was with Moses.
  • Whoever rebels against your command and does not heed your words, in all that you command him, shall be put to death. Only be strong and of good courage.”
  • Anyone who rebels against your orders and does not obey your words and everything you command will be put to death. So be strong and courageous!”
