The Memorial Stones
And it came to pass, when all the people had completely crossed over the Jordan, that the Lord spoke to Joshua, saying:

Als das ganze Volk durch den Jordan gezogen war, sprach der HERR zu Josua:
“Take for yourselves twelve men from the people, one man from every tribe,
»Wählt nun zwölf Männer aus dem Volk aus, von jedem Stamm einen.
and command them, saying, ‘Take for yourselves twelve stones from here, out of the midst of the Jordan, from the place where the priests’ feet stood firm. You shall carry them over with you and leave them in the lodging place where you lodge tonight.’ ”
Befehlt ihnen, zwölf große Steine aus dem Jordan zu holen, genau an der Stelle, wo die Priester stehen. Sie sollen die Steine zu dem Ort bringen, an dem ihr heute übernachten werdet.«
Then Joshua called the twelve men whom he had appointed from the children of Israel, one man from every tribe;
Josua rief die zwölf Männer
and Joshua said to them: “Cross over before the ark of the Lord your God into the midst of the Jordan, and each one of you take up a stone on his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel,
und wies sie an: »Geht zurück in den Jordan, bis an die Stelle, wo die Priester mit der Bundeslade des HERRN, eures Gottes, stehen. Jeder von euch soll sich dort einen großen Stein auf die Schulter laden, damit wir zwölf Steine haben, für jeden Stamm Israels einen.
that this may be a sign among you when your children ask in time to come, saying, ‘What do these stones mean to you?’
Aus ihnen soll ein Denkmal gebaut werden. Wenn euch eure Kinder später einmal fragen, was diese Steine bedeuten,
Then you shall answer them that the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord; when it crossed over the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. And these stones shall be for a memorial to the children of Israel forever.”
dann erklärt ihnen: ›Als man die Bundeslade durch den Jordan trug, staute sich sein Wasser, und wir konnten trockenen Fußes hinüberziehen. Daran soll dieses Denkmal die Israeliten zu allen Zeiten erinnern.‹«
And the children of Israel did so, just as Joshua commanded, and took up twelve stones from the midst of the Jordan, as the Lord had spoken to Joshua, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel, and carried them over with them to the place where they lodged, and laid them down there.
Die zwölf Männer taten, was Josua ihnen befohlen hatte. Sie hoben zwölf Steine aus dem Flussbett, für jeden Stamm Israels einen, und trugen sie bis an den Ort, wo sie übernachten sollten.
Then Joshua set up twelve stones in the midst of the Jordan, in the place where the feet of the priests who bore the ark of the covenant stood; and they are there to this day.
Josua nahm weitere zwölf Steine und richtete mitten im Jordan ein Denkmal auf, genau dort, wo die Priester mit der Bundeslade standen. Diese Steine sind noch heute dort.
So the priests who bore the ark stood in the midst of the Jordan until everything was finished that the Lord had commanded Joshua to speak to the people, according to all that Moses had commanded Joshua; and the people hurried and crossed over.
Die Priester mit der Bundeslade standen noch immer im Flussbett. Sie blieben so lange dort, bis Josua und das Volk alle Weisungen des HERRN ausgeführt hatten, ganz wie es Moses Willen entsprach. Die Israeliten hatten den Fluss so schnell wie möglich durchquert.
Then it came to pass, when all the people had completely crossed over, that the ark of the Lord and the priests crossed over in the presence of the people.
Erst als alle auf der anderen Seite waren, brachen auch die Priester mit der Bundeslade auf und nahmen ihren Platz an der Spitze des Zuges wieder ein.
And the men of Reuben, the men of Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh crossed over armed before the children of Israel, as Moses had spoken to them.
Die Stämme Ruben und Gad und der halbe Stamm Manasse zogen bewaffnet vor den anderen Israeliten her, wie Mose es befohlen hatte.
Insgesamt waren es etwa 40.000 kampfbereite Soldaten, die unter der Führung des HERRN in die Ebene von Jericho einmarschierten.
An diesem Tag sorgte der HERR dafür, dass ganz Israel vor Josua Achtung bekam. Das Volk hatte nun den gleichen Respekt vor ihm wie früher vor Mose; und so blieb es sein Leben lang.
“Command the priests who bear the ark of the Testimony to come up from the Jordan.”
»Befiehl den Priestern, die die Bundeslade mit dem Gesetz tragen, ans Ufer zu kommen.«
Joshua therefore commanded the priests, saying, “Come up from the Jordan.”
Josua forderte die Priester dazu auf,
And it came to pass, when the priests who bore the ark of the covenant of the Lord had come from the midst of the Jordan, and the soles of the priests’ feet touched the dry land, that the waters of the Jordan returned to their place and overflowed all its banks as before.
und sie stiegen mit der Bundeslade aus dem Jordan. Kaum berührten sie mit ihren Füßen das Land, da strömte das Wasser mit gleicher Gewalt wie zuvor, und der Jordan trat wieder über die Ufer.
Now the people came up from the Jordan on the tenth day of the first month, and they camped in Gilgal on the east border of Jericho.
Dies ereignete sich am 10. Tag des 1. Monats. Das Volk schlug sein Lager bei Gilgal auf, an der östlichen Grenze des Gebietes von Jericho.
And those twelve stones which they took out of the Jordan, Joshua set up in Gilgal.
Dort errichtete Josua ein Denkmal aus den zwölf Steinen, die er vom Jordan hatte mitbringen lassen.
Then he spoke to the children of Israel, saying: “When your children ask their fathers in time to come, saying, ‘What are these stones?’
Er sagte zu den Israeliten: »Wenn eure Nachkommen euch eines Tages fragen werden, was diese Steine bedeuten,
then you shall let your children know, saying, ‘Israel crossed over this Jordan on dry land’;
dann sollt ihr ihnen erklären: ›Die Steine erinnern uns daran, dass Israel trockenen Fußes den Jordan durchquert hat.‹
for the Lord your God dried up the waters of the Jordan before you until you had crossed over, as the Lord your God did to the Red Sea, which He dried up before us until we had crossed over,
Denn der HERR, euer Gott, hat diesen Fluss vor euren Augen aufgestaut, damit ihr hindurchziehen konntet, so wie er euch damals einen Weg durch das Schilfmeer gebahnt hat.
