Samson Defeats the Philistines
After a while, in the time of wheat harvest, it happened that Samson visited his wife with a young goat. And he said, “Let me go in to my wife, into her room.” But her father would not permit him to go in.

Her father said, “I really thought that you thoroughly hated her; therefore I gave her to your companion. Is not her younger sister better than she? Please, take her instead.”

And Samson said to them, “This time I shall be blameless regarding the Philistines if I harm them!”
Simson sagte zu ihnen: Diesmal bin ich frei von Schuld, wenn ich den Philistern etwas Böses antue.
Then Samson went and caught three hundred foxes; and he took torches, turned the foxes tail to tail, and put a torch between each pair of tails.
Simson ging weg und fing dreihundert Schakale. Dann nahm er Fackeln, kehrte Schwanz zu Schwanz und steckte je eine Fackel mitten zwischen zwei Schwänze.
When he had set the torches on fire, he let the foxes go into the standing grain of the Philistines, and burned up both the shocks and the standing grain, as well as the vineyards and olive groves.
Er zündete die Fackeln an und ließ sie in die Getreidefelder der Philister laufen. So verbrannte er die Garben und das noch stehende Korn, ebenso die Weingärten und die Ölbäume.
Then the Philistines said, “Who has done this?”
And they answered, “Samson, the son-in-law of the Timnite, because he has taken his wife and given her to his companion.” So the Philistines came up and burned her and her father with fire.

Als die Philister fragten: Wer hat das getan?, antwortete man: Simson, der Schwiegersohn des Timniters, weil dieser ihm seine Frau weggenommen und seinem Gefährten gegeben hat. Da zogen die Philister hinauf und verbrannten die Frau und ihren Vater.
Samson said to them, “Since you would do a thing like this, I will surely take revenge on you, and after that I will cease.”
Darauf sagte ihnen Simson: Wenn ihr es so macht, dann werde ich nicht mehr aufhören, bis ich an euch Rache genommen habe.
So he attacked them hip and thigh with a great slaughter; then he went down and dwelt in the cleft of the rock of Etam.
Und er schlug ihnen mit gewaltigen Schlägen die Knochen entzwei. Dann ging er hinab und hauste in der Felsenkluft von Etam.
Now the Philistines went up, encamped in Judah, and deployed themselves against Lehi.
Die Philister zogen hinauf, schlugen in Juda ihr Lager auf und streiften in Lehi umher.
Die Männer von Juda fragten sie: Warum seid ihr gegen uns heraufgezogen? Sie antworteten: Um Simson zu fesseln, sind wir heraufgezogen, um es mit ihm so zu machen, wie er es mit uns gemacht hat.
Then three thousand men of Judah went down to the cleft of the rock of Etam, and said to Samson, “Do you not know that the Philistines rule over us? What is this you have done to us?”
And he said to them, “As they did to me, so I have done to them.”
And he said to them, “As they did to me, so I have done to them.”
Da zogen dreitausend Männer aus Juda zur Felsenkluft von Etam hinab und sagten zu Simson: Weißt du nicht, dass die Philister unsere Herren sind? Was hast du uns da angetan? Er antwortete ihnen: Wie sie es mit mir gemacht haben, so habe ich es mit ihnen gemacht.
But they said to him, “We have come down to arrest you, that we may deliver you into the hand of the Philistines.”
Then Samson said to them, “Swear to me that you will not kill me yourselves.”
Then Samson said to them, “Swear to me that you will not kill me yourselves.”
Sie sagten zu ihm: Um dich zu fesseln, sind wir herabgezogen, und dich in die Hand der Philister zu geben. Simson sagte zu ihnen: Schwört mir, dass ihr selber nicht über mich herfallen werdet!
So they spoke to him, saying, “No, but we will tie you securely and deliver you into their hand; but we will surely not kill you.” And they bound him with two new ropes and brought him up from the rock.
Sie antworteten ihm: Nein, wir wollen dich nur fesseln und in ihre Hand geben, aber töten wollen wir dich nicht. Sie fesselten ihn also mit zwei neuen Stricken und führten ihn vom Felsen hinauf.
Als er nach Lehi hinaufkam, liefen ihm die Philister mit Triumphgeschrei entgegen. Da kam der Geist des HERRN über ihn. Die Stricke an seinen Armen wurden wie Flachsfäden, die vom Feuer versengt werden, und die Fesseln schmolzen von seinen Händen.
He found a fresh jawbone of a donkey, reached out his hand and took it, and killed a thousand men with it.
Er fand den noch blutigen Kinnbacken eines Esels, streckte seine Hand aus, ergriff ihn und erschlug damit tausend Männer.
Then Samson said:
“With the jawbone of a donkey,
Heaps upon heaps,
With the jawbone of a donkey
I have slain a thousand men!”
“With the jawbone of a donkey,
Heaps upon heaps,
With the jawbone of a donkey
I have slain a thousand men!”
Damals sagte Simson: Mit dem Kinnbacken eines Esels einen Haufen, zwei Haufen! Mit einem Eselskinnbacken habe ich tausend Männer erschlagen.
Und es geschah, als er ausgeredet hatte, warf er den Kinnbacken aus seiner Hand weg; daher nannte man den Ort Ramat Lehi.
Then he became very thirsty; so he cried out to the Lord and said, “You have given this great deliverance by the hand of Your servant; and now shall I die of thirst and fall into the hand of the uncircumcised?”
Weil er großen Durst hatte, rief er zum HERRN und sagte: Du hast durch die Hand deines Knechtes diesen großen Sieg gegeben; jetzt aber muss ich vor Durst sterben und den Unbeschnittenen in die Hände fallen.
Da spaltete Gott die Höhle von Lehi und es kam Wasser daraus hervor, sodass Simson trinken konnte. Seine Lebensgeister kehrten zurück und er lebte wieder auf. Deshalb nennt man die Quelle bei Lehi bis zum heutigen Tag Quelle des Rufers.
