New King James Version

New Living Translation

  • Hannah’s Prayer

    And Hannah prayed and said:
    “My heart rejoices in the Lord;
    My [a]horn is exalted in the Lord.
    [b]I smile at my enemies,
    Because I rejoice in Your salvation.
  • Hannah’s Prayer of Praise

    Then Hannah prayed:
    “My heart rejoices in the LORD!
    The LORD has made me strong.a
    Now I have an answer for my enemies;
    I rejoice because you rescued me.
  • “No one is holy like the Lord,
    For there is none besides You,
    Nor is there any rock like our God.
  • No one is holy like the LORD!
    There is no one besides you;
    there is no Rock like our God.
  • “Talk no more so very proudly;
    Let no arrogance come from your mouth,
    For the Lord is the God of knowledge;
    And by Him actions are weighed.
  • “Stop acting so proud and haughty!
    Don’t speak with such arrogance!
    For the LORD is a God who knows what you have done;
    he will judge your actions.
  • “The bows of the mighty men are broken,
    And those who stumbled are girded with strength.
  • The bow of the mighty is now broken,
    and those who stumbled are now strong.
  • Those who were full have hired themselves out for bread,
    And the hungry have ceased to hunger.
    Even the barren has borne seven,
    And she who has many children has become feeble.
  • Those who were well fed are now starving,
    and those who were starving are now full.
    The childless woman now has seven children,
    and the woman with many children wastes away.
  • “The Lord kills and makes alive;
    He brings down to the grave and brings up.
  • The LORD gives both death and life;
    he brings some down to the graveb but raises others up.
  • The Lord makes poor and makes rich;
    He brings low and lifts up.
  • The LORD makes some poor and others rich;
    he brings some down and lifts others up.
  • He raises the poor from the dust
    And lifts the beggar from the ash heap,
    To set them among princes
    And make them inherit the throne of glory.
    “For the pillars of the earth are the Lord’s,
    And He has set the world upon them.
  • He lifts the poor from the dust
    and the needy from the garbage dump.
    He sets them among princes,
    placing them in seats of honor.
    For all the earth is the LORD’s,
    and he has set the world in order.
  • He will guard the feet of His saints,
    But the wicked shall be silent in darkness.
    “For by strength no man shall prevail.
  • “He will protect his faithful ones,
    but the wicked will disappear in darkness.
    No one will succeed by strength alone.
  • The adversaries of the Lord shall be broken in pieces;
    From heaven He will thunder against them.
    The Lord will judge the ends of the earth.
    “He will give strength to His king,
    And exalt the [c]horn of His anointed.”
  • Those who fight against the LORD will be shattered.
    He thunders against them from heaven;
    the LORD judges throughout the earth.
    He gives power to his king;
    he increases the strengthc of his anointed one.”
  • Then Elkanah went to his house at Ramah. But the child [d]ministered to the Lord before Eli the priest.
  • Then Elkanah returned home to Ramah without Samuel. And the boy served the LORD by assisting Eli the priest.
  • The Wicked Sons of Eli

    Now the sons of Eli were corrupt;[e] they did not know the Lord.

  • Eli’s Wicked Sons

    Now the sons of Eli were scoundrels who had no respect for the LORD
  • And the priests’ custom with the people was that when any man offered a sacrifice, the priest’s servant would come with a three-pronged fleshhook in his hand while the meat was boiling.
  • or for their duties as priests. Whenever anyone offered a sacrifice, Eli’s sons would send over a servant with a three-pronged fork. While the meat of the sacrificed animal was still boiling,
  • Then he would thrust it into the pan, or kettle, or caldron, or pot; and the priest would take for himself all that the fleshhook brought up. So they did in Shiloh to all the Israelites who came there.
  • the servant would stick the fork into the pot and demand that whatever it brought up be given to Eli’s sons. All the Israelites who came to worship at Shiloh were treated this way.
  • Also, before they burned the fat, the priest’s servant would come and say to the man who sacrificed, “Give meat for roasting to the priest, for he will not take boiled meat from you, but raw.”
  • Sometimes the servant would come even before the animal’s fat had been burned on the altar. He would demand raw meat before it had been boiled so that it could be used for roasting.
  • And if the man said to him, “They should really burn the fat first; then you may take as much as your heart desires,” he would then answer him, “No, but you must give it now; and if not, I will take it by force.”
  • The man offering the sacrifice might reply, “Take as much as you want, but the fat must be burned first.” Then the servant would demand, “No, give it to me now, or I’ll take it by force.”
  • Therefore the sin of the young men was very great before the Lord, for men abhorred[f] the offering of the Lord.
  • So the sin of these young men was very serious in the LORD’s sight, for they treated the LORD’s offerings with contempt.
  • Samuel’s Childhood Ministry

    But Samuel ministered before the Lord, even as a child, wearing a linen ephod.
  • But Samuel, though he was only a boy, served the LORD. He wore a linen garment like that of a priest.d
  • Moreover his mother used to make him a little robe, and bring it to him year by year when she came up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice.
  • Each year his mother made a small coat for him and brought it to him when she came with her husband for the sacrifice.
  • And Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife, and say, “The Lord give you descendants from this woman for the [g]loan that was given to the Lord.” Then they would go to their own home.
  • Before they returned home, Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife and say, “May the LORD give you other children to take the place of this one she gave to the LORD.e
  • And the Lord visited[h] Hannah, so that she conceived and bore three sons and two daughters. Meanwhile the child Samuel grew before the Lord.
  • And the LORD blessed Hannah, and she conceived and gave birth to three sons and two daughters. Meanwhile, Samuel grew up in the presence of the LORD.
  • Prophecy Against Eli’s Household

    Now Eli was very old; and he heard everything his sons did to all Israel, [i]and how they lay with the women who assembled at the door of the tabernacle of meeting.
  • Now Eli was very old, but he was aware of what his sons were doing to the people of Israel. He knew, for instance, that his sons were seducing the young women who assisted at the entrance of the Tabernacle.f
  • So he said to them, “Why do you do such things? For I hear of your evil dealings from all the people.
  • Eli said to them, “I have been hearing reports from all the people about the wicked things you are doing. Why do you keep sinning?
  • No, my sons! For it is not a good report that I hear. You make the Lord’s people transgress.
  • You must stop, my sons! The reports I hear among the LORD’s people are not good.
  • If one man sins against another, God[j] will judge him. But if a man sins against the Lord, who will intercede for him?” Nevertheless they did not heed the voice of their father, because the Lord desired to kill them.
  • If someone sins against another person, Godg can mediate for the guilty party. But if someone sins against the LORD, who can intercede?” But Eli’s sons wouldn’t listen to their father, for the LORD was already planning to put them to death.
  • And the child Samuel grew in stature, and in favor both with the Lord and men.
  • Meanwhile, the boy Samuel grew taller and grew in favor with the LORD and with the people.
  • Then a man of God came to Eli and said to him, “Thus says the Lord: ‘Did I not clearly reveal Myself to the house of your father when they were in Egypt in Pharaoh’s house?

  • A Warning for Eli’s Family

    One day a man of God came to Eli and gave him this message from the LORD: “I revealed myselfh to your ancestors when they were Pharaoh’s slaves in Egypt.
  • Did I not choose him out of all the tribes of Israel to be My priest, to offer upon My altar, to burn incense, and to wear an ephod before Me? And did I not give to the house of your father all the offerings of the children of Israel made by fire?
  • I chose your ancestor Aaroni from among all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to offer sacrifices on my altar, to burn incense, and to wear the priestly vestj as he served me. And I assigned the sacrificial offerings to you priests.
  • Why do you kick at My sacrifice and My offering which I have commanded in My dwelling place, and honor your sons more than Me, to make yourselves fat with the best of all the offerings of Israel My people?’
  • So why do you scorn my sacrifices and offerings? Why do you give your sons more honor than you give me — for you and they have become fat from the best offerings of my people Israel!
  • Therefore the Lord God of Israel says: ‘I said indeed that your house and the house of your father would walk before Me forever.’ But now the Lord says: ‘Far be it from Me; for those who honor Me I will honor, and those who despise Me shall be lightly esteemed.
  • “Therefore, the LORD, the God of Israel, says: I promised that your branch of the tribe of Levik would always be my priests. But I will honor those who honor me, and I will despise those who think lightly of me.
  • Behold, the days are coming that I will cut off your [k]arm and the arm of your father’s house, so that there will not be an old man in your house.
  • The time is coming when I will put an end to your family, so it will no longer serve as my priests. All the members of your family will die before their time. None will reach old age.
  • And you will see an enemy in My dwelling place, despite all the good which God does for Israel. And there shall not be an old man in your house forever.
  • You will watch with envy as I pour out prosperity on the people of Israel. But no members of your family will ever live out their days.
  • But any of your men whom I do not cut off from My altar shall consume your eyes and grieve your heart. And all the descendants of your house shall die in the flower of their age.
  • The few not cut off from serving at my altar will survive, but only so their eyes can go blind and their hearts break, and their children will die a violent death.l
  • Now this shall be a sign to you that will come upon your two sons, on Hophni and Phinehas: in one day they shall die, both of them.
  • And to prove that what I have said will come true, I will cause your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, to die on the same day!
  • Then I will raise up for Myself a faithful priest who shall do according to what is in My heart and in My mind. I will build him a sure house, and he shall walk before My anointed forever.
  • “Then I will raise up a faithful priest who will serve me and do what I desire. I will establish his family, and they will be priests to my anointed kings forever.
  • And it shall come to pass that everyone who is left in your house will come and bow down to him for a piece of silver and a morsel of bread, and say, “Please, [l]put me in one of the priestly positions, that I may eat a piece of bread.” ’ ”
  • Then all of your surviving family will bow before him, begging for money and food. ‘Please,’ they will say, ‘give us jobs among the priests so we will have enough to eat.’”
