Jonathan’s Loyalty to David
Then David fled from Naioth in Ramah, and went and said to Jonathan, “What have I done? What is my iniquity, and what is my sin before your father, that he seeks my life?”

David floh aus dem Prophetenhaus in Rama, ging zu Jonatan und hielt ihm vor: Was habe ich denn getan? Was ist meine Schuld? Was habe ich gegen deinen Vater verbrochen, dass er mir nach dem Leben trachtet?
So Jonathan said to him, “By no means! You shall not die! Indeed, my father will do nothing either great or small without first telling me. And why should my father hide this thing from me? It is not so!”
Jonatan antwortete ihm: Das ist undenkbar. Du wirst nicht sterben. Du weißt doch: Mein Vater tut nichts Wichtiges oder Unwichtiges, ohne es mir zu offenbaren. Warum sollte mein Vater gerade das vor mir verheimlichen? Nein, das kann nicht sein.
Then David took an oath again, and said, “Your father certainly knows that I have found favor in your eyes, and he has said, ‘Do not let Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved.’ But truly, as the Lord lives and as your soul lives, there is but a step between me and death.”
David aber beteuerte nochmals: Dein Vater weiß genau, dass ich dein Wohlwollen gefunden habe, und sagt sich: Jonatan soll das nicht wissen, sonst wird er betrübt. Aber, so wahr der HERR lebt und so wahr du selbst lebst: Zwischen mir und dem Tod liegt nur ein Schritt.
So Jonathan said to David, “Whatever you yourself desire, I will do it for you.”
Jonatan fragte David: Was meinst du? Was könnte ich für dich tun?
And David said to Jonathan, “Indeed tomorrow is the New Moon, and I should not fail to sit with the king to eat. But let me go, that I may hide in the field until the third day at evening.
David antwortete Jonatan: Du weißt doch, morgen ist Neumond. Da müsste ich unbedingt am Mahl des Königs teilnehmen. Lass mich fortgehen, damit ich mich bis übermorgen Abend auf dem Feld versteckt halte!
If your father misses me at all, then say, ‘David earnestly asked permission of me that he might run over to Bethlehem, his city, for there is a yearly sacrifice there for all the family.’
Wenn dein Vater mich vermisst, dann sag: David hat mich dringend gebeten, in seine Heimatstadt Betlehem gehen zu dürfen, weil dort das jährliche Opfer für die ganze Sippe stattfindet.
If he says thus: ‘It is well,’ your servant will be safe. But if he is very angry, be sure that evil is determined by him.
Wenn er dann sagt: Gut!, dann steht es günstig für deinen Knecht. Wenn er aber in heftigen Zorn gerät, dann kannst du daran erkennen, dass das Unheil von ihm beschlossen ist.
Therefore you shall deal kindly with your servant, for you have brought your servant into a covenant of the Lord with you. Nevertheless, if there is iniquity in me, kill me yourself, for why should you bring me to your father?”
Zeig deinem Knecht also deine Freundschaft; denn du hast mit deinem Knecht einen Bund vor dem HERRN geschlossen. Wenn ich Schuld auf mich geladen habe, dann töte mich gleich! Warum willst du mich erst zu deinem Vater bringen?
But Jonathan said, “Far be it from you! For if I knew certainly that evil was determined by my father to come upon you, then would I not tell you?”
Jonatan antwortete: Das darf nicht mit dir geschehen. Sobald ich sicher weiß, dass mein Vater beschlossen hat, Unheil über dich zu bringen, werde ich es dir auf jeden Fall mitteilen.
Then David said to Jonathan, “Who will tell me, or what if your father answers you roughly?”
David aber fragte Jonatan: Wer wird mir die Nachricht bringen, wenn dir dein Vater etwa eine schroffe Antwort gibt?
And Jonathan said to David, “Come, let us go out into the field.” So both of them went out into the field.
Jonatan sagte zu David: Komm, wir wollen aufs Feld hinausgehen. Beide gingen aufs Feld hinaus.
Und Jonatan sagte zu David: Beim HERRN, dem Gott Israels: Wenn ich morgen oder übermorgen um diese Zeit bei meinem Vater in Erfahrung bringe, dass es gut für David steht, dann werde ich jemand schicken und es dir sagen lassen.
may the Lord do so and much more to Jonathan. But if it pleases my father to do you evil, then I will report it to you and send you away, that you may go in safety. And the Lord be with you as He has been with my father.
Der HERR möge Jonatan dies und das antun: Wenn mein Vater Böses gegen dich im Sinn hat, werde ich es dir sagen und werde dich in Frieden gehen lassen. Der HERR möge mit dir sein, wie er mit meinem Vater gewesen ist.
And you shall not only show me the kindness of the Lord while I still live, that I may not die;
Nicht wahr, wenn ich dann noch am Leben bin, wirst du entsprechend der Huld des HERRN an mir handeln. Wenn ich aber umkomme,
dann entzieh meinem Haus niemals deine Gunst, selbst wenn der HERR jeden der Feinde Davids auf dem Erdboden ausrottet.
So schloss Jonatan einen Bund mit dem Haus David. — Der HERR wird es aus der Hand von Davids Feinden einfordern.
Now Jonathan again caused David to vow, because he loved him; for he loved him as he loved his own soul.
Und Jonatan ließ auch David bei seiner Liebe zu ihm schwören; denn er liebte ihn wie sein eigenes Leben.
Then Jonathan said to David, “Tomorrow is the New Moon; and you will be missed, because your seat will be empty.
Dann sagte Jonatan zu ihm: Morgen ist Neumond. Du wirst vermisst werden, wenn dein Platz leer sein wird.
And when you have stayed three days, go down quickly and come to the place where you hid on the day of the deed; and remain by the stone Ezel.
Übermorgen aber geh weit hinab, an den Ort, wo du dich am Tag der Tat versteckt hattest, und setz dich neben den Stein dort!
Then I will shoot three arrows to the side, as though I shot at a target;
Ich werde dann drei Pfeile in seine Nähe schießen, als ob ich ein Ziel treffen wollte.
and there I will send a lad, saying, ‘Go, find the arrows.’ If I expressly say to the lad, ‘Look, the arrows are on this side of you; get them and come’ — then, as the Lord lives, there is safety for you and no harm.
Siehe, ich schicke meinen Diener und sage: Geh, such nach den Pfeilen! Wenn ich dem Diener ausdrücklich sage: Pass auf, die Pfeile liegen von dir aus herwärts, hol sie!, dann komm, denn es steht günstig für dich und es liegt nichts vor, so wahr der HERR lebt.
But if I say thus to the young man, ‘Look, the arrows are beyond you’ — go your way, for the Lord has sent you away.
Wenn ich aber zu dem jungen Mann sage: Pass auf, die Pfeile liegen von dir aus weiter draußen!, dann geh weg, denn der HERR schickt dich fort.
And as for the matter which you and I have spoken of, indeed the Lord be between you and me forever.”
Für diese Vereinbarung, die wir, ich und du, getroffen haben, soll der HERR auf ewig zwischen mir und dir sein.
Then David hid in the field. And when the New Moon had come, the king sat down to eat the feast.
Daraufhin versteckte sich David auf dem Feld. So kam der Neumond und der König setzte sich zu Tisch, um das Mahl zu halten.
Er setzte sich wie jedes Mal auf seinen gewohnten Platz an der Wand; Jonatan saß ihm gegenüber und Abner saß an Sauls Seite. Davids Platz aber blieb leer.
Nevertheless Saul did not say anything that day, for he thought, “Something has happened to him; he is unclean, surely he is unclean.”
Saul sagte an diesem Tag nichts, denn er dachte: Es ist ihm etwas zugestoßen, was ihn unrein sein lässt; sicher ist er nicht rein.
And it happened the next day, the second day of the month, that David’s place was empty. And Saul said to Jonathan his son, “Why has the son of Jesse not come to eat, either yesterday or today?”
Als aber am zweiten Tag, dem Tag nach dem Neumond, der Platz Davids wieder leer blieb, sagte Saul zu seinem Sohn Jonatan: Warum ist der Sohn Isais gestern und heute nicht zum Essen gekommen?
So Jonathan answered Saul, “David earnestly asked permission of me to go to Bethlehem.
Jonatan antwortete Saul: David hat mich dringend gebeten, nach Betlehem gehen zu dürfen.
And he said, ‘Please let me go, for our family has a sacrifice in the city, and my brother has commanded me to be there. And now, if I have found favor in your eyes, please let me get away and see my brothers.’ Therefore he has not come to the king’s table.”
Er sagte: Lass mich gehen; denn in der Stadt findet ein Opfer unserer Sippe statt. Mein Bruder selbst hat mich aufgefordert. Wenn ich dein Wohlwollen gefunden habe, dann möchte ich jetzt fortgehen dürfen und meine Brüder wiedersehen. Deswegen ist David nicht an den Tisch des Königs gekommen.
Then Saul’s anger was aroused against Jonathan, and he said to him, “You son of a perverse, rebellious woman! Do I not know that you have chosen the son of Jesse to your own shame and to the shame of your mother’s nakedness?
Da wurde Saul zornig über Jonatan und sagte: Du Sohn eines entarteten und aufsässigen Weibes! Ich weiß sehr gut, dass du dich zu deiner eigenen Schande und zur Schande des Schoßes deiner Mutter für den Sohn Isais entschieden hast.
Doch solange der Sohn Isais auf Erden lebt, wirst weder du noch dein Königtum Bestand haben. Schick also sofort jemand hin und lass ihn holen; denn er ist ein Kind des Todes.
And Jonathan answered Saul his father, and said to him, “Why should he be killed? What has he done?”
Jonatan antwortete seinem Vater Saul: Warum soll er umgebracht werden? Was hat er getan?
Da schleuderte Saul den Speer gegen ihn, um ihn zu töten. Nun wusste Jonatan, dass sein Vater beschlossen hatte, David umzubringen.
So Jonathan arose from the table in fierce anger, and ate no food the second day of the month, for he was grieved for David, because his father had treated him shamefully.
Voll Zorn stand er vom Tisch auf und aß an diesem zweiten Neumondtag nichts; denn er war bekümmert wegen David, weil sein Vater ihn beschimpft hatte.
And so it was, in the morning, that Jonathan went out into the field at the time appointed with David, and a little lad was with him.
Am nächsten Morgen ging Jonatan, wie er mit David verabredet hatte, aufs Feld hinaus und ein junger Diener war bei ihm.
Then he said to his lad, “Now run, find the arrows which I shoot.” As the lad ran, he shot an arrow beyond him.
Er sagte zu dem Diener: Lauf, such die Pfeile, die ich abschieße. Der Diener lief und er schoss einen Pfeil über ihn hinaus.
When the lad had come to the place where the arrow was which Jonathan had shot, Jonathan cried out after the lad and said, “Is not the arrow beyond you?”
Als der Diener an die Stelle kam, wohin Jonatan den Pfeil geschossen hatte, rief Jonatan dem Diener nach: Liegt der Pfeil von dir aus nicht noch weiter draußen?
And Jonathan cried out after the lad, “Make haste, hurry, do not delay!” So Jonathan’s lad gathered up the arrows and came back to his master.
Und er rief dem Diener nach: Beeil dich, schnell, bleib nicht stehen! Der Diener Jonatans hob den Pfeil auf und kam zu seinem Herrn zurück.
But the lad did not know anything. Only Jonathan and David knew of the matter.
Der Diener aber ahnte nichts; nur Jonatan und David wussten von der Vereinbarung.
Jonatan gab dem Diener, den er bei sich hatte, seine Waffen und sagte zu ihm: Geh, bring sie in die Stadt!
As soon as the lad had gone, David arose from a place toward the south, fell on his face to the ground, and bowed down three times. And they kissed one another; and they wept together, but David more so.
Als der Diener heimgegangen war, verließ David sein Versteck neben dem Stein, warf sich mit dem Gesicht zur Erde nieder und verneigte sich dreimal. Dann küssten sie einander und beide weinten, am heftigsten aber David.
Then Jonathan said to David, “Go in peace, since we have both sworn in the name of the Lord, saying, ‘May the Lord be between you and me, and between your descendants and my descendants, forever.’ ” So he arose and departed, and Jonathan went into the city.
Jonatan sagte zu ihm: Geh in Frieden! Für das, was wir beide uns im Namen des HERRN geschworen haben, sei der HERR zwischen mir und dir, zwischen meinen und deinen Nachkommen auf ewig.
