  • This is the account of the families of Shem, Ham, and Japheth, the three sons of Noah. Many children were born to them after the great flood.
    Descendants of Japheth

  • Nations Descended from Noah

    Now this is the genealogy of the sons of Noah: Shem, Ham, and Japheth. And sons were born to them after the flood.
  • The descendants of Japheth were Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech, and Tiras.
  • The sons of Japheth were Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech, and Tiras.
  • The descendants of Gomer were Ashkenaz, Riphath, and Togarmah.
  • The sons of Gomer were Ashkenaz, [a]Riphath, and Togarmah.
  • The descendants of Javan were Elishah, Tarshish, Kittim, and Rodanim.a
  • The sons of Javan were Elishah, Tarshish, Kittim, and [b]Dodanim.
  • Their descendants became the seafaring peoples that spread out to various lands, each identified by its own language, clan, and national identity.
    Descendants of Ham

  • From these the coastland peoples of the Gentiles were separated into their lands, everyone according to his language, according to their families, into their nations.
  • The descendants of Ham were Cush, Mizraim, Put, and Canaan.
  • The sons of Ham were Cush, Mizraim, [c]Put, and Canaan.
  • The descendants of Cush were Seba, Havilah, Sabtah, Raamah, and Sabteca. The descendants of Raamah were Sheba and Dedan.
  • The sons of Cush were Seba, Havilah, Sabtah, Raamah, and Sabtechah; and the sons of Raamah were Sheba and Dedan.
  • Cush was also the ancestor of Nimrod, who was the first heroic warrior on earth.
  • Cush begot Nimrod; he began to be a mighty one on the earth.
  • Since he was the greatest hunter in the world,b his name became proverbial. People would say, “This man is like Nimrod, the greatest hunter in the world.”
  • He was a mighty hunter before the Lord; therefore it is said, “Like Nimrod the mighty hunter before the Lord.”
  • He built his kingdom in the land of Babylonia,c with the cities of Babylon, Erech, Akkad, and Calneh.
  • And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, Erech, Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar.
  • From there he expanded his territory to Assyria,d building the cities of Nineveh, Rehoboth-ir, Calah,
  • From that land he went to Assyria and built Nineveh, Rehoboth Ir, Calah,
  • and Resen (the great city located between Nineveh and Calah).
  • and Resen between Nineveh and Calah (that is the principal city).
  • Mizraim was the ancestor of the Ludites, Anamites, Lehabites, Naphtuhites,
  • Mizraim begot Ludim, Anamim, Lehabim, Naphtuhim,
  • Pathrusites, Casluhites, and the Caphtorites, from whom the Philistines came.e
  • Pathrusim, and Casluhim (from whom came the Philistines and Caphtorim).
  • Canaan’s oldest son was Sidon, the ancestor of the Sidonians. Canaan was also the ancestor of the Hittites,f
  • Canaan begot Sidon his firstborn, and Heth;
  • Jebusites, Amorites, Girgashites,
  • the Jebusite, the Amorite, and the Girgashite;
  • Hivites, Arkites, Sinites,
  • the Hivite, the Arkite, and the Sinite;
  • Arvadites, Zemarites, and Hamathites. The Canaanite clans eventually spread out,
  • the Arvadite, the Zemarite, and the Hamathite. Afterward the families of the Canaanites were dispersed.
  • and the territory of Canaan extended from Sidon in the north to Gerar and Gaza in the south, and east as far as Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim, near Lasha.
  • And the border of the Canaanites was from Sidon as you go toward Gerar, as far as Gaza; then as you go toward Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim, as far as Lasha.
  • These were the descendants of Ham, identified by clan, language, territory, and national identity.
    Descendants of Shem

  • These were the sons of Ham, according to their families, according to their languages, in their lands and in their nations.
  • Sons were also born to Shem, the older brother of Japheth.g Shem was the ancestor of all the descendants of Eber.
  • And children were born also to Shem, the father of all the children of Eber, [d]the brother of Japheth the elder.
  • The descendants of Shem were Elam, Asshur, Arphaxad, Lud, and Aram.
  • The sons of Shem were Elam, Asshur, Arphaxad, Lud, and Aram.
  • The descendants of Aram were Uz, Hul, Gether, and Mash.
  • The sons of Aram were Uz, Hul, Gether, and [e]Mash.
  • Arphaxad was the father of Shelah,h and Shelah was the father of Eber.
  • [f]Arphaxad begot Salah, and Salah begot Eber.
  • Eber had two sons. The first was named Peleg (which means “division”), for during his lifetime the people of the world were divided into different language groups. His brother’s name was Joktan.
  • To Eber were born two sons: the name of one was [g]Peleg, for in his days the earth was divided; and his brother’s name was Joktan.
  • Joktan was the ancestor of Almodad, Sheleph, Hazarmaveth, Jerah,
  • Joktan begot Almodad, Sheleph, Hazarmaveth, Jerah,
  • Hadoram, Uzal, Diklah,
  • Hadoram, Uzal, Diklah,
  • Obal, Abimael, Sheba,
  • [h]Obal, Abimael, Sheba,
  • Ophir, Havilah, and Jobab. All these were descendants of Joktan.
  • Ophir, Havilah, and Jobab. All these were the sons of Joktan.
  • The territory they occupied extended from Mesha all the way to Sephar in the eastern mountains.
  • And their dwelling place was from Mesha as you go toward Sephar, the mountain of the east.
  • These were the descendants of Shem, identified by clan, language, territory, and national identity.
  • These were the sons of Shem, according to their families, according to their languages, in their lands, according to their nations.

  • Conclusion

    These are the clans that descended from Noah’s sons, arranged by nation according to their lines of descent. All the nations of the earth descended from these clans after the great flood.
  • These were the families of the sons of Noah, according to their generations, in their nations; and from these the nations were divided on the earth after the flood.
