  • Jacob’s Journey to Egypt

    So Jacoba set out for Egypt with all his possessions. And when he came to Beersheba, he offered sacrifices to the God of his father, Isaac.
  • Jacob's Journey to Egypt

    And Israel took his journey with all that he had, and came to Beersheba, and offered sacrifices unto the God of his father Isaac.
  • During the night God spoke to him in a vision. “Jacob! Jacob!” he called.
    “Here I am,” Jacob replied.
  • And God spake unto Israel in the visions of the night, and said, Jacob, Jacob. And he said, Here am I.
  • “I am God,b the God of your father,” the voice said. “Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for there I will make your family into a great nation.
  • And he said, I am God, the God of thy father: fear not to go down into Egypt; for I will there make of thee a great nation:
  • I will go with you down to Egypt, and I will bring you back again. You will die in Egypt, but Joseph will be with you to close your eyes.”
  • I will go down with thee into Egypt; and I will also surely bring thee up again: and Joseph shall put his hand upon thine eyes.
  • So Jacob left Beersheba, and his sons took him to Egypt. They carried him and their little ones and their wives in the wagons Pharaoh had provided for them.
  • And Jacob rose up from Beersheba: and the sons of Israel carried Jacob their father, and their little ones, and their wives, in the wagons which Pharaoh had sent to carry him.
  • They also took all their livestock and all the personal belongings they had acquired in the land of Canaan. So Jacob and his entire family went to Egypt —
  • And they took their cattle, and their goods, which they had gotten in the land of Canaan, and came into Egypt, Jacob, and all his seed with him:
  • sons and grandsons, daughters and granddaughters — all his descendants.
  • His sons, and his sons' sons with him, his daughters, and his sons' daughters, and all his seed brought he with him into Egypt.
  • These are the names of the descendants of Israel — the sons of Jacob — who went to Egypt:
    Reuben was Jacob’s oldest son.
  • Those who went to Egypt

    And these are the names of the children of Israel, which came into Egypt, Jacob and his sons: Reuben, Jacob's firstborn.
  • The sons of Reuben were Hanoch, Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi.
  • And the sons of Reuben; Hanoch, and Phallu, and Hezron, and Carmi.
  • The sons of Simeon were Jemuel, Jamin, Ohad, Jakin, Zohar, and Shaul. (Shaul’s mother was a Canaanite woman.)
  • And the sons of Simeon; Jemuel, and Jamin, and Ohad, and Jachin, and Zohar, and Shaul the son of a Canaanitish woman.
  • The sons of Levi were Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.
  • And the sons of Levi; Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.
  • The sons of Judah were Er, Onan, Shelah, Perez, and Zerah (though Er and Onan had died in the land of Canaan). The sons of Perez were Hezron and Hamul.
  • And the sons of Judah; Er, and Onan, and Shelah, and Pharez, and Zerah: but Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan. And the sons of Pharez were Hezron and Hamul.
  • The sons of Issachar were Tola, Puah,c Jashub,d and Shimron.
  • And the sons of Issachar; Tola, and Phuvah, and Job, and Shimron.
  • The sons of Zebulun were Sered, Elon, and Jahleel.
  • And the sons of Zebulun; Sered, and Elon, and Jahleel.
  • These were the sons of Leah and Jacob who were born in Paddan-aram, in addition to their daughter, Dinah. The number of Jacob’s descendants (male and female) through Leah was thirty-three.
  • These be the sons of Leah, which she bare unto Jacob in Padanaram, with his daughter Dinah: all the souls of his sons and his daughters were thirty and three.
  • The sons of Gad were Zephon,e Haggi, Shuni, Ezbon, Eri, Arodi, and Areli.
  • And the sons of Gad; Ziphion, and Haggi, Shuni, and Ezbon, Eri, and Arodi, and Areli.
  • The sons of Asher were Imnah, Ishvah, Ishvi, and Beriah. Their sister was Serah. Beriah’s sons were Heber and Malkiel.
  • And the sons of Asher; Jimnah, and Ishuah, and Isui, and Beriah, and Serah their sister: and the sons of Beriah; Heber, and Malchiel.
  • These were the sons of Zilpah, the servant given to Leah by her father, Laban. The number of Jacob’s descendants through Zilpah was sixteen.
  • These are the sons of Zilpah, whom Laban gave to Leah his daughter, and these she bare unto Jacob, even sixteen souls.
  • The sons of Jacob’s wife Rachel were Joseph and Benjamin.
  • The sons of Rachel Jacob's wife; Joseph, and Benjamin.
  • Joseph’s sons, born in the land of Egypt, were Manasseh and Ephraim. Their mother was Asenath, daughter of Potiphera, the priest of On.f
  • And unto Joseph in the land of Egypt were born Manasseh and Ephraim, which Asenath the daughter of Potipherah priest of On bare unto him.
  • Benjamin’s sons were Bela, Beker, Ashbel, Gera, Naaman, Ehi, Rosh, Muppim, Huppim, and Ard.
  • And the sons of Benjamin were Belah, and Becher, and Ashbel, Gera, and Naaman, Ehi, and Rosh, Muppim, and Huppim, and Ard.
  • These were the sons of Rachel and Jacob. The number of Jacob’s descendants through Rachel was fourteen.
  • These are the sons of Rachel, which were born to Jacob: all the souls were fourteen.
  • The son of Dan was Hushim.
  • And the sons of Dan; Hushim.
  • The sons of Naphtali were Jahzeel, Guni, Jezer, and Shillem.
  • And the sons of Naphtali; Jahzeel, and Guni, and Jezer, and Shillem.
  • These were the sons of Bilhah, the servant given to Rachel by her father, Laban. The number of Jacob’s descendants through Bilhah was seven.
  • These are the sons of Bilhah, which Laban gave unto Rachel his daughter, and she bare these unto Jacob: all the souls were seven.
  • The total number of Jacob’s direct descendants who went with him to Egypt, not counting his sons’ wives, was sixty-six.
  • All the souls that came with Jacob into Egypt, which came out of his loins, besides Jacob's sons' wives, all the souls were threescore and six;
  • In addition, Joseph had two sonsg who were born in Egypt. So altogether, there were seventyh members of Jacob’s family in the land of Egypt.
  • And the sons of Joseph, which were born him in Egypt, were two souls: all the souls of the house of Jacob, which came into Egypt, were threescore and ten.

  • Jacob’s Family Arrives in Goshen

    As they neared their destination, Jacob sent Judah ahead to meet Joseph and get directions to the region of Goshen. And when they finally arrived there,
  • Joseph Meets Jacob

    And he sent Judah before him unto Joseph, to direct his face unto Goshen; and they came into the land of Goshen.
  • Joseph prepared his chariot and traveled to Goshen to meet his father, Jacob. When Joseph arrived, he embraced his father and wept, holding him for a long time.
  • And Joseph made ready his chariot, and went up to meet Israel his father, to Goshen, and presented himself unto him; and he fell on his neck, and wept on his neck a good while.
  • Finally, Jacob said to Joseph, “Now I am ready to die, since I have seen your face again and know you are still alive.”
  • And Israel said unto Joseph, Now let me die, since I have seen thy face, because thou art yet alive.
  • And Joseph said to his brothers and to his father’s entire family, “I will go to Pharaoh and tell him, ‘My brothers and my father’s entire family have come to me from the land of Canaan.
  • And Joseph said unto his brethren, and unto his father's house, I will go up, and shew Pharaoh, and say unto him, My brethren, and my father's house, which were in the land of Canaan, are come unto me;
  • These men are shepherds, and they raise livestock. They have brought with them their flocks and herds and everything they own.’”
  • And the men are shepherds, for their trade hath been to feed cattle; and they have brought their flocks, and their herds, and all that they have.
  • Then he said, “When Pharaoh calls for you and asks you about your occupation,
  • And it shall come to pass, when Pharaoh shall call you, and shall say, What is your occupation?
  • you must tell him, ‘We, your servants, have raised livestock all our lives, as our ancestors have always done.’ When you tell him this, he will let you live here in the region of Goshen, for the Egyptians despise shepherds.”
  • That ye shall say, Thy servants' trade hath been about cattle from our youth even until now, both we, and also our fathers: that ye may dwell in the land of Goshen; for every shepherd is an abomination unto the Egyptians.
