David’s Final Instructions to Solomon

“I am going where everyone on earth must someday go. Take courage and be a man.

Observe the requirements of the LORD your God, and follow all his ways. Keep the decrees, commands, regulations, and laws written in the Law of Moses so that you will be successful in all you do and wherever you go.
Erfüll deine Pflicht gegen den HERRN, deinen Gott: Geh auf seinen Wegen und bewahre alle seine Satzungen, Gebote, Rechtsentscheide und Bundeszeugnisse, die in der Weisung des Mose niedergeschrieben sind! Dann wirst du Erfolg haben bei allem, was du tust, und überall, wohin du dich wendest.
If you do this, then the LORD will keep the promise he made to me. He told me, ‘If your descendants live as they should and follow me faithfully with all their heart and soul, one of them will always sit on the throne of Israel.’
Und der HERR wird sein Wort wahr machen, das er mir gegeben hat, als er sagte: Wenn deine Söhne auf ihren Weg achten und aufrichtig mit ganzem Herzen und ganzer Seele vor mir leben, wird es dir nie an Nachkommen auf dem Thron Israels fehlen.

Lass dich von deiner Weisheit leiten und sorge dafür, dass sein graues Haupt nicht unbehelligt in die Unterwelt kommt!
“Be kind to the sons of Barzillai of Gilead. Make them permanent guests at your table, for they took care of me when I fled from your brother Absalom.
Doch die Söhne Barsillais aus Gilead sollst du freundlich behandeln. Sie sollen zu denen gehören, die von deinem Tisch essen; denn sie sind mir ebenso entgegengekommen, als ich vor deinem Bruder Abschalom fliehen musste.
“And remember Shimei son of Gera, the man from Bahurim in Benjamin. He cursed me with a terrible curse as I was fleeing to Mahanaim. When he came down to meet me at the Jordan River, I swore by the LORD that I would not kill him.
Da ist auch Schimi, der Sohn Geras, vom Stamm Benjamin, aus Bahurim. Er hat einen bösen Fluch gegen mich ausgesprochen, als ich nach Mahanajim ging. Doch ist er mir an den Jordan entgegengekommen und ich habe ihm beim HERRN geschworen: Ich werde dich nicht mit dem Schwert hinrichten.
Jetzt aber lass ihn nicht ungestraft! Du bist ein kluger Mann und weißt, was du mit ihm tun sollst. Schick sein graues Haupt blutig in die Unterwelt!
Then David died and was buried with his ancestors in the City of David.
David entschlief zu seinen Vätern und wurde in der Davidstadt begraben.
David had reigned over Israel for forty years, seven of them in Hebron and thirty-three in Jerusalem.
Die Zeit, in der David über Israel König war, betrug vierzig Jahre. In Hebron regierte er sieben und in Jerusalem dreiunddreißig Jahre.
Solomon became king and sat on the throne of David his father, and his kingdom was firmly established.
Salomo saß nun auf dem Thron seines Vaters David und seine Herrschaft festigte sich mehr und mehr.
Solomon Establishes His Rule
One day Adonijah, whose mother was Haggith, came to see Bathsheba, Solomon’s mother. “Have you come with peaceful intentions?” she asked him.
“Yes,” he said, “I come in peace.
Adonija, der Sohn der Haggit, begab sich zu Batseba, der Mutter Salomos. Sie fragte ihn: Kommst du in friedlicher Absicht? Er antwortete: Ja.
In fact, I have a favor to ask of you.”
“What is it?” she asked.
“What is it?” she asked.

He replied, “As you know, the kingdom was rightfully mine; all Israel wanted me to be the next king. But the tables were turned, and the kingdom went to my brother instead; for that is the way the LORD wanted it.
Da sagte er: Du weißt, dass mir das Königtum zustand und dass ganz Israel mich als König haben wollte. Doch ist mir die Königswürde entgangen; sie ist meinem Bruder zugefallen, weil sie ihm vom HERRN bestimmt war.
So now I have just one favor to ask of you. Please don’t turn me down.”
“What is it?” she asked.
“What is it?” she asked.
Jetzt aber möchte ich eine einzige Bitte an dich richten. Weise mich nicht ab! Sie antwortete: Sprich sie nur aus!
He replied, “Speak to King Solomon on my behalf, for I know he will do anything you request. Ask him to let me marry Abishag, the girl from Shunem.”
Da begann er: Rede doch mit König Salomo; dich wird er nicht abweisen. Bitte ihn, dass er mir Abischag aus Schunem zur Frau gibt.
“All right,” Bathsheba replied. “I will speak to the king for you.”
Batseba erwiderte: Gut, ich werde in deiner Angelegenheit mit dem König reden.
So Bathsheba went to King Solomon to speak on Adonijah’s behalf. The king rose from his throne to meet her, and he bowed down before her. When he sat down on his throne again, the king ordered that a throne be brought for his mother, and she sat at his right hand.
Als nun Batseba zu König Salomo kam, um mit ihm wegen Adonija zu sprechen, erhob sich der König, ging ihr entgegen und verneigte sich vor ihr. Dann setzte er sich auf seinen Thron und ließ auch für die Königinmutter einen Thron hinstellen. Sie setzte sich an seine rechte Seite
“I have one small request to make of you,” she said. “I hope you won’t turn me down.”
“What is it, my mother?” he asked. “You know I won’t refuse you.”
“What is it, my mother?” he asked. “You know I won’t refuse you.”
und begann: Eine einzige kleine Bitte hätte ich an dich. Weise mich nicht ab! Der König antwortete ihr: Sprich sie nur aus, Mutter! Ich werde dich nicht abweisen.
“Then let your brother Adonijah marry Abishag, the girl from Shunem,” she replied.
Da bat sie: Man gebe doch Abischag aus Schunem deinem Bruder Adonija zur Frau.
“How can you possibly ask me to give Abishag to Adonijah?” King Solomon demanded. “You might as well ask me to give him the kingdom! You know that he is my older brother, and that he has Abiathar the priest and Joab son of Zeruiah on his side.”
Der König Salomo entgegnete seiner Mutter: Warum bittest du für Adonija um Abischag aus Schunem? Fordere doch gleich das Königtum für ihn! Er ist ja mein älterer Bruder und auf seiner Seite stehen der Priester Abjatar und Joab, der Sohn der Zeruja.
Then King Solomon made a vow before the LORD: “May God strike me and even kill me if Adonijah has not sealed his fate with this request.
Und König Salomo schwor beim HERRN: Gott soll mir dies und das antun, wenn dieses Ansinnen Adonija nicht das Leben kostet.
The LORD has confirmed me and placed me on the throne of my father, David; he has established my dynasty as he promised. So as surely as the LORD lives, Adonijah will die this very day!”
So wahr der HERR lebt, der mich eingesetzt und auf den Thron meines Vaters David erhoben hat und der mir, wie er versprochen hat, ein Haus gebaut hat: Noch heute muss Adonija sterben.
So King Solomon ordered Benaiah son of Jehoiada to execute him, and Adonijah was put to death.
Darauf schickte König Salomo Benaja, den Sohn Jojadas, hinauf und dieser versetzte Adonija den Todesstoß.
Then the king said to Abiathar the priest, “Go back to your home in Anathoth. You deserve to die, but I will not kill you now, because you carried the Ark of the Sovereign LORD for David my father and you shared all his hardships.”
Zum Priester Abjatar sagte der König: Geh auf dein Landgut nach Anatot! Zwar hast du den Tod verdient; doch will ich dich heute nicht töten, weil du die Lade GOTTES, des Herrn, vor meinem Vater David getragen und alle Demütigungen mit meinem Vater geteilt hast.
So Solomon deposed Abiathar from his position as priest of the LORD, thereby fulfilling the prophecy the LORD had given at Shiloh concerning the descendants of Eli.
So vertrieb Salomo Abjatar, sodass er nicht mehr Priester des HERRN war, und erfüllte das Wort, das der HERR über das Haus Eli in Schilo gesprochen hatte.
Joab had not joined Absalom’s earlier rebellion, but he had joined Adonijah’s rebellion. So when Joab heard about Adonijah’s death, he ran to the sacred tent of the LORD and grabbed on to the horns of the altar.
Die Kunde davon erreichte Joab. Er hatte zu Adonija gehalten, sich aber nicht an Abschalom angeschlossen. Er floh in das Zelt des HERRN und ergriff die Hörner des Altars.
When this was reported to King Solomon, he sent Benaiah son of Jehoiada to execute him.
Man meldete dem König Salomo: Joab ist in das Zelt des HERRN geflohen und steht neben dem Altar. Salomo sandte Benaja, den Sohn Jojadas, mit dem Auftrag: Geh hin und stoß ihn nieder!
Benaiah went to the sacred tent of the LORD and said to Joab, “The king orders you to come out!”
But Joab answered, “No, I will die here.”
So Benaiah returned to the king and told him what Joab had said.

Benaja kam in das Zelt des HERRN und rief Joab zu: Der König befiehlt dir herauszukommen. Doch Joab antwortete: Nein, hier will ich sterben. Benaja berichtete dem König: Das hat Joab gesagt, so hat er mir geantwortet.
“Do as he said,” the king replied. “Kill him there beside the altar and bury him. This will remove the guilt of Joab’s senseless murders from me and from my father’s family.
Da gebot ihm der König: Tu, was er gesagt hat! Stoß ihn nieder und begrab ihn! Nimm so von mir und vom Haus meines Vaters das Blut, das Joab ohne Grund vergossen hat!
Der HERR lasse sein Blut auf sein Haupt kommen, weil er ohne Wissen meines Vaters zwei Männer, die gerechter und besser waren als er, niedergestoßen und mit dem Schwert getötet hat: Abner, den Sohn Ners, den Heerführer Israels, und Amasa, den Sohn Jeters, den Heerführer Judas.
May their blood be on Joab and his descendants forever, and may the LORD grant peace forever to David, his descendants, his dynasty, and his throne.”
Ihr Blut komme für immer auf das Haupt Joabs und seiner Nachkommen. David aber, seinen Nachkommen, seinem Haus und seinem Thron sei vom HERRN immerfort Heil beschieden.
So Benaiah son of Jehoiada returned to the sacred tent and killed Joab, and he was buried at his home in the wilderness.
Nun ging Benaja, der Sohn Jojadas, hinauf, stieß Joab nieder und tötete ihn. Er wurde auf seinem Besitz in der Steppe begraben.
Then the king appointed Benaiah to command the army in place of Joab, and he installed Zadok the priest to take the place of Abiathar.
Der König setzte dann Benaja, den Sohn Jojadas, an seiner Stelle über das Heer und dem Priester Zadok verlieh er die Stelle Abjatars.
The king then sent for Shimei and told him, “Build a house here in Jerusalem and live there. But don’t step outside the city to go anywhere else.
Hierauf ließ der König Schimi rufen und befahl ihm: Bau dir ein Haus in Jerusalem, bleib hier und geh nicht weg, weder dahin noch dorthin!
On the day you so much as cross the Kidron Valley, you will surely die; and your blood will be on your own head.”
Du sollst wissen, dass du sterben musst, sobald du hinausgehst und das Kidrontal überschreitest. Dein Blut wird über dein Haupt kommen.
Shimei replied, “Your sentence is fair; I will do whatever my lord the king commands.” So Shimei lived in Jerusalem for a long time.
Schimi antwortete dem König: Gut, dein Knecht wird tun, was mein Herr, der König, bestimmt hat. So blieb Schimi viele Tage in Jerusalem.
But three years later two of Shimei’s slaves ran away to King Achish son of Maacah of Gath. When Shimei learned where they were,
Nach Verlauf von drei Jahren entflohen zwei Sklaven Schimis zu Achisch, dem Sohn Maachas, dem König von Gat. Man meldete Schimi: Deine Sklaven sind in Gat.
he saddled his donkey and went to Gath to search for them. When he found them, he brought them back to Jerusalem.
Da machte er sich auf, sattelte seinen Esel und begab sich zu Achisch nach Gat, um seine Sklaven zu suchen. Er ging hin und holte sie aus Gat zurück.
Solomon heard that Shimei had left Jerusalem and had gone to Gath and returned.
Es wurde aber Salomo hinterbracht, dass Schimi von Jerusalem nach Gat gegangen und wieder zurückgekehrt sei.
So the king sent for Shimei and demanded, “Didn’t I make you swear by the LORD and warn you not to go anywhere else or you would surely die? And you replied, ‘The sentence is fair; I will do as you say.’
Er ließ daher Schimi rufen und hielt ihm vor: Habe ich dich nicht beim HERRN schwören lassen und dich gewarnt: Sobald du weggehst und dich dahin oder dorthin begibst, so weißt du, dass du sterben musst? Und du hast geantwortet: Gut, ich habe es gehört.
Then why haven’t you kept your oath to the LORD and obeyed my command?”
Warum hast du den Eid beim HERRN und das Gebot, das ich dir gegeben habe, nicht beachtet?
The king also said to Shimei, “You certainly remember all the wicked things you did to my father, David. May the LORD now bring that evil on your own head.
Und weiter sagte der König zu Schimi: Du kennst all das Böse, dein Herz kennt es, das du meinem Vater David angetan hast; jetzt lässt es der HERR auf dein Haupt zurückfallen.
But may I, King Solomon, receive the LORD’s blessings, and may one of David’s descendants always sit on this throne in the presence of the LORD.”
Der König Salomo aber sei gesegnet und der Thron Davids stehe fest vor dem HERRN in Ewigkeit.
Then, at the king’s command, Benaiah son of Jehoiada took Shimei outside and killed him.
So the kingdom was now firmly in Solomon’s grip.

Hierauf erteilte der König dem Benaja, dem Sohn Jojadas, Befehl und dieser ging hinaus und versetzte Schimi den Todesstoß. Die Herrschaft war nun fest in der Hand Salomos.
