Queen Athaliah Rules in Judah
When Athaliah, the mother of King Ahaziah of Judah, learned that her son was dead, she began to destroy the rest of the royal family.

Athalja aber, Ahasjas Mutter, da sie sah, daß ihr Sohn tot war, machte sie sich auf und brachte um alle aus dem königlichen Geschlecht.
Aber Joseba, die Tochter des Königs Joram, Ahasjas Schwester, nahm Joas, den Sohn Ahasjas, und stahl ihn aus des Königs Kinder, die getötet wurden, und tat ihn mit seiner Amme in die Bettkammer; und sie verbargen ihn vor Athalja, daß er nicht getötet ward.
Joash remained hidden in the Temple of the LORD for six years while Athaliah ruled over the land.
Und er war mit ihr versteckt im Hause des HERRN sechs Jahre. Athalja aber war Königin im Lande.
Revolt against Athaliah
In the seventh year of Athaliah’s reign, Jehoiada the priest summoned the commanders, the Carite mercenaries, and the palace guards to come to the Temple of the LORD. He made a solemn pact with them and made them swear an oath of loyalty there in the LORD’s Temple; then he showed them the king’s son.
Im siebenten Jahr aber sandte hin Jojada und nahm die Obersten über 100 von den Leibwächtern und den Trabanten und ließ sie zu sich ins Haus des HERRN kommen und machte einen Bund mit ihnen und nahm einen Eid von ihnen im Hause des HERRN und zeigte ihnen des Königs Sohn
Jehoiada told them, “This is what you must do. A third of you who are on duty on the Sabbath are to guard the royal palace itself.
und gebot ihnen und sprach: Das ist’s, was ihr tun sollt: Ein dritter Teil von euch, die ihr des Sabbats antretet, soll der Hut warten im Hause des Königs,
Another third of you are to stand guard at the Sur Gate. And the final third must stand guard behind the palace guard. These three groups will all guard the palace.
und ein dritter Teil soll sein am Tor Sur, und ein dritter Teil am Tor das hinter den Trabanten ist, und soll der Hut warten am Hause Massah.
The other two units who are off duty on the Sabbath must stand guard for the king at the LORD’s Temple.
Aber die zwei Teile euer aller, die des Sabbats abtreten, sollen der Hut warten im Hause des HERRN um den König.
Form a bodyguard around the king and keep your weapons in hand. Kill anyone who tries to break through. Stay with the king wherever he goes.”
Und sollt rings um den König euch machen, ein jeglicher mit seiner Wehre in der Hand, und wer herein zwischen die Reihen kommt, der sterbe, und sollt bei dem König sein, wenn er aus und ein geht.
So the commanders did everything as Jehoiada the priest ordered. The commanders took charge of the men reporting for duty that Sabbath, as well as those who were going off duty. They brought them all to Jehoiada the priest,
Und die Obersten über 100 taten alles, was ihnen Jojada, der Priester, geboten hatte, und nahmen zu sich ihre Männer, die des Sabbats antraten, mit denen, die des Sabbats abtraten, und kamen zu dem Priester Jojada.
and he supplied them with the spears and small shields that had once belonged to King David and were stored in the Temple of the LORD.
Und der Priester gab den Hauptleuten Spieße und Schilde, die dem König David gehört hatten und in dem Hause des HERRN waren.
The palace guards stationed themselves around the king, with their weapons ready. They formed a line from the south side of the Temple around to the north side and all around the altar.
Und die Trabanten standen um den König her, ein jeglicher mit seiner Wehre in der Hand, von dem Winkel des Hauses zur Rechten bis zum Winkel zur Linken, zum Altar zu und zum Hause.
Und er ließ des Königs Sohn hervorkommen und setzte ihm eine Krone auf und gab ihm das Zeugnis, und sie machten ihn zum König und salbten ihn und schlugen die Hände zusammen und sprachen: Glück zu dem König!
The Death of Athaliah
When Athaliah heard the noise made by the palace guards and the people, she hurried to the LORD’s Temple to see what was happening.
Und da Athalja hörte das Geschrei des Volks, das zulief, kam sie zum Volk in das Haus des HERRN
When she arrived, she saw the newly crowned king standing in his place of authority by the pillar, as was the custom at times of coronation. The commanders and trumpeters were surrounding him, and people from all over the land were rejoicing and blowing trumpets. When Athaliah saw all this, she tore her clothes in despair and shouted, “Treason! Treason!”
und sah. Siehe, da stand der König an der Säule, wie es Gewohnheit war, und die Obersten und die Drommeter bei dem König; und alles Volk des Landes war fröhlich, und man blies mit Drommeten. Athalja aber zerriß ihre Kleider und rief: Aufruhr, Aufruhr!
Aber der Priester Jojada gebot den Obersten über 100, die über das Heer gesetzt waren, und sprach zu ihnen: Führet sie zwischen den Reihen hinaus; und wer ihr folgt, der sterbe des Schwerts! Denn der Priester hatte gesagt, sie sollte nicht im Hause des HERRN sterben.
So they seized her and led her out to the gate where horses enter the palace grounds, and she was killed there.
Und sie machten ihr Raum zu beiden Seiten; und sie ging hinein des Weges, da die Rosse zum Hause des Königs gehen, und ward daselbst getötet.
Jehoiada’s Religious Reforms
Then Jehoiada made a covenant between the LORD and the king and the people that they would be the LORD’s people. He also made a covenant between the king and the people.
Da machte Jojada einen Bund zwischen dem HERRN und dem König und dem Volk, daß sie des HERRN Volk sein sollten; also auch zwischen dem König und dem Volk.
And all the people of the land went over to the temple of Baal and tore it down. They demolished the altars and smashed the idols to pieces, and they killed Mattan the priest of Baal in front of the altars.

Da ging alles Volk des Landes in das Haus Baals und brachen seine Altäre ab und zerbrachen seine Bildnisse gründlich, und Matthan, den Priester Baals, erwürgten sie vor den Altären. Der Priester aber bestellte die Ämter im Hause des HERRN
Then the commanders, the Carite mercenaries, the palace guards, and all the people of the land escorted the king from the Temple of the LORD. They went through the gate of the guards and into the palace, and the king took his seat on the royal throne.
und nahm die Obersten über 100 und die Leibwächter und die Trabanten und alles Volk des Landes, und sie führten den König hinab vom Hause des HERRN und kamen durchs Tor der Trabanten zum Königshause; und er setzte sich auf der Könige Stuhl.
