The Floating Ax Head
One day the group of prophets came to Elisha and told him, “As you can see, this place where we meet with you is too small.

Wir wollen an den Jordan gehen und dort soll jeder von uns einen Balken holen, damit wir uns hier einen Raum errichten, in dem wir wohnen können. Er antwortete: Geht!
“Please come with us,” someone suggested.
“I will,” he said.
“I will,” he said.
Einer aber bat ihn: Erweis uns den Gefallen und geh mit deinen Knechten! Er erwiderte: Ich gehe mit.
So he went with them.

But as one of them was cutting a tree, his ax head fell into the river. “Oh, sir!” he cried. “It was a borrowed ax!”
Einem aber fiel beim Fällen seines Stammes die eiserne Klinge des Beils in das Wasser. Er rief laut: Wehe, mein Herr, das Beil ist auch noch geliehen!
“Where did it fall?” the man of God asked. When he showed him the place, Elisha cut a stick and threw it into the water at that spot. Then the ax head floated to the surface.
Der Gottesmann fragte: Wohin ist es gefallen? Er zeigte ihm die Stelle; Elischa schnitt ein Stück Holz ab, warf es dorthin und brachte das Eisen zum Schwimmen.
“Grab it,” Elisha said. And the man reached out and grabbed it.
Dann befahl er: Hol es herauf! Der Mann streckte die Hand aus und ergriff es.
Elisha Traps the Arameans
When the king of Aram was at war with Israel, he would confer with his officers and say, “We will mobilize our forces at such and such a place.”
Der König von Aram führte Krieg mit Israel. Er verabredete mit seinen Untergebenen: An dem und dem Ort soll mein Lager sein.
But immediately Elisha, the man of God, would warn the king of Israel, “Do not go near that place, for the Arameans are planning to mobilize their troops there.”
Aber der Gottesmann ließ dem König von Israel sagen: Hüte dich, an jener Stelle vorbeizugehen; denn die Aramäer kommen dort herab.
So the king of Israel would send word to the place indicated by the man of God. Time and again Elisha warned the king, so that he would be on the alert there.
Der König von Israel schickte nun Späher an die Stelle, die ihm der Gottesmann genannt und vor der er ihn gewarnt hatte, und nahm sich dort in Acht. Als das nicht nur einmal oder zweimal geschah,
The king of Aram became very upset over this. He called his officers together and demanded, “Which of you is the traitor? Who has been informing the king of Israel of my plans?”
wurde der König von Aram beunruhigt. Er rief seine Untergebenen und fragte sie: Könnt ihr mir nicht angeben, wer von den Unsrigen zum König von Israel hält?
“It’s not us, my lord the king,” one of the officers replied. “Elisha, the prophet in Israel, tells the king of Israel even the words you speak in the privacy of your bedroom!”
Da sagte einer von seinen Leuten: Niemand, mein Herr und König, sondern Elischa, der Prophet in Israel, verrät dem König von Israel, was du in deinem Schlafzimmer sprichst.
“Go and find out where he is,” the king commanded, “so I can send troops to seize him.”
And the report came back: “Elisha is at Dothan.”
And the report came back: “Elisha is at Dothan.”
Da befahl er: Geht und erkundet, wo er sich aufhält, damit ich ihn festnehmen lasse. Man meldete ihm: Er ist in Dotan.
So one night the king of Aram sent a great army with many chariots and horses to surround the city.
Er schickte also Pferde und Wagen und eine starke Truppe dorthin. Sie erreichten die Stadt in der Nacht und umstellten sie.
When the servant of the man of God got up early the next morning and went outside, there were troops, horses, and chariots everywhere. “Oh, sir, what will we do now?” the young man cried to Elisha.
Als der Diener des Gottesmannes am nächsten Morgen aufstand und hinaustrat, hatte die Truppe die Stadt mit Pferden und Wagen umstellt. Da sagte der Diener zu seinem Herrn: Wehe, mein Herr, was sollen wir tun?
“Don’t be afraid!” Elisha told him. “For there are more on our side than on theirs!”
Doch dieser sagte: Fürchte dich nicht! Bei uns sind mehr als bei ihnen.
Then Elisha prayed, “O LORD, open his eyes and let him see!” The LORD opened the young man’s eyes, and when he looked up, he saw that the hillside around Elisha was filled with horses and chariots of fire.
Dann betete Elischa: HERR, öffne ihm die Augen, damit er sieht! Und der HERR öffnete dem Diener die Augen: Er sah den Berg rings um Elischa voll von feurigen Pferden und Wagen.
As the Aramean army advanced toward him, Elisha prayed, “O LORD, please make them blind.” So the LORD struck them with blindness as Elisha had asked.
Als dann die Aramäer zu ihm herabstiegen, betete Elischa zum HERRN und rief: Schlag doch diese Leute mit Verblendung! Und der HERR schlug sie auf das Wort Elischas hin mit Verblendung.
Then Elisha went out and told them, “You have come the wrong way! This isn’t the right city! Follow me, and I will take you to the man you are looking for.” And he led them to the city of Samaria.
Daraufhin sagte Elischa zu ihnen: Das ist nicht der richtige Weg und nicht die richtige Stadt. Folgt mir! Ich werde euch zu dem Mann führen, den ihr sucht. Er führte sie aber nach Samaria.
As soon as they had entered Samaria, Elisha prayed, “O LORD, now open their eyes and let them see.” So the LORD opened their eyes, and they discovered that they were in the middle of Samaria.
Als sie dort angekommen waren, betete Elischa: HERR, öffne ihnen die Augen, damit sie sehen! Der HERR öffnete ihnen die Augen und sie sahen, dass sie mitten in Samaria waren.
When the king of Israel saw them, he shouted to Elisha, “My father, should I kill them? Should I kill them?”
Sobald nun der König von Israel sie erblickte, rief er Elischa zu: Soll ich sie totschlagen, mein Vater?
“Of course not!” Elisha replied. “Do we kill prisoners of war? Give them food and drink and send them home again to their master.”
Doch dieser erwiderte: Töte sie nicht! Erschlägst du denn jene, die du mit deinem Schwert und Bogen gefangen nimmst? Setz ihnen Brot und Wasser vor, damit sie essen und trinken und dann zu ihrem Herrn zurückkehren!
So the king made a great feast for them and then sent them home to their master. After that, the Aramean raiders stayed away from the land of Israel.
Der König gab ihnen reichlich zu essen und zu trinken und entließ sie zu ihrem Herrn. Seitdem kamen keine aramäischen Streifscharen mehr in das Land Israel.
Ben-Hadad Besieges Samaria
Some time later, however, King Ben-hadad of Aram mustered his entire army and besieged Samaria.
Danach sammelte Ben-Hadad, der König von Aram, seine ganze Streitmacht, zog gegen Samaria und belagerte es.
In der eingeschlossenen Stadt entstand eine große Hungersnot, sodass der Kopf eines Esels achtzig Silberschekel kostete und ein Viertel Kab Taubenmist fünf Silberschekel.
One day as the king of Israel was walking along the wall of the city, a woman called to him, “Please help me, my lord the king!”
Als der König von Israel einmal auf der Mauer vorbeischritt, rief ihm eine Frau zu: Hilf mir, mein Herr und König!
He answered, “If the LORD doesn’t help you, what can I do? I have neither food from the threshing floor nor wine from the press to give you.”
Er antwortete: Wenn dir der HERR nicht hilft, wie soll ich dir helfen? Soll es etwas von der Tenne oder von der Kelter sein?
But then the king asked, “What is the matter?”
She replied, “This woman said to me: ‘Come on, let’s eat your son today, then we will eat my son tomorrow.’
She replied, “This woman said to me: ‘Come on, let’s eat your son today, then we will eat my son tomorrow.’
Dann fragte er sie: Was fehlt dir? Sie sagte: Diese Frau hat von mir verlangt: Gib deinen Sohn her, damit wir ihn heute aufessen! Meinen Sohn werden wir dann morgen verzehren.
So we cooked my son and ate him. Then the next day I said to her, ‘Kill your son so we can eat him,’ but she has hidden her son.”
So haben wir meinen Sohn gekocht und aufgegessen. Als ich aber am nächsten Tag zu ihr sagte: Gib jetzt deinen Sohn her, damit wir ihn verzehren, hatte sie ihren Sohn versteckt.
When the king heard this, he tore his clothes in despair. And as the king walked along the wall, the people could see that he was wearing burlap under his robe next to his skin.
Als der König die Worte der Frau hörte, zerriss er seine Kleider, und da er auf der Mauer entlangging, sah das Volk, dass er ein Bußgewand auf dem bloßen Leib trug.
“May God strike me and even kill me if I don’t separate Elisha’s head from his shoulders this very day,” the king vowed.
Er rief: Gott soll mir dies und das antun, wenn Elischa, der Sohn Schafats, bis heute Abend seinen Kopf behält.
Elisha was sitting in his house with the elders of Israel when the king sent a messenger to summon him. But before the messenger arrived, Elisha said to the elders, “A murderer has sent a man to cut off my head. When he arrives, shut the door and keep him out. We will soon hear his master’s steps following him.”
Elischa hielt sich in seinem Haus auf und die Ältesten saßen bei ihm. Der König hatte einen Mann vor sich her gesandt; aber noch vor der Ankunft des Boten sagte Elischa zu den Ältesten: Merkt ihr, dass dieser Sohn eines Mörders jemanden schickt, der mir den Kopf abschlagen soll? Gebt nun Acht! Wenn der Bote kommt, verschließt die Tür und haltet ihn an der Tür zurück! Sind nicht schon die Schritte seines Herrn hinter ihm zu hören?
