David said, “I am going to show loyalty to Hanun because his father, Nahash, was always loyal to me.” So David sent messengers to express sympathy to Hanun about his father’s death.

the Ammonite commanders said to Hanun, “Do you really think these men are coming here to honor your father? No! David has sent them to spy out the land so they can come in and conquer it!”
sagten die Fürsten der Ammoniter zu Hanun: Will David wirklich deinen Vater vor deinen Augen ehren, weil er Leute schickt, die dir sein Beileid aussprechen sollen? Sind seine Diener nicht viel eher zu dir gekommen, um das Land auszukundschaften, in Aufruhr zu versetzen und auszuspionieren?
So Hanun seized David’s ambassadors and shaved them, cut off their robes at the buttocks, and sent them back to David in shame.
Darauf ließ Hanun die Diener Davids festnehmen, scheren und ihnen die Kleider zur Hälfte abschneiden, bis zum Gesäß herauf. So schickte er sie weg.
When David heard what had happened to the men, he sent messengers to tell them, “Stay at Jericho until your beards grow out, and then come back.” For they felt deep shame because of their appearance.
Sie zogen fort, und als man David meldete, was mit den Männern geschehen war, schickte er ihnen jemand entgegen und ließ ihnen, weil sie so schwer geschändet waren, sagen: Bleibt in Jericho und kehrt erst zurück, wenn euer Bart wieder gewachsen ist!
Als die Ammoniter merkten, dass sie sich bei David verhasst gemacht hatten, schickten Hanun und die Ammoniter tausend Talente Silber, um in Mesopotamien, Aram-Maacha und Zoba Wagenkämpfer samt Wagen anzuwerben.
They also hired 32,000 chariots and secured the support of the king of Maacah and his army. These forces camped at Medeba, where they were joined by the Ammonite troops that Hanun had recruited from his own towns.
Sie warben zweiunddreißigtausend Kriegswagen an und gewannen den König von Maacha mit seinen Kriegsleuten. Diese zogen heran und lagerten vor Medeba. Auch die Ammoniter sammelten sich aus ihren Städten und zogen in den Kampf.
When David heard about this, he sent Joab and all his warriors to fight them.
David erfuhr davon und schickte Joab mit dem ganzen Heer, allen kriegstüchtigen Männern, hin.
The Ammonite troops came out and drew up their battle lines at the entrance of the city, while the other kings positioned themselves to fight in the open fields.
Die Ammoniter rückten aus und stellten sich vor der Stadt zum Kampf auf, während die Könige, die gekommen waren, jeweils für sich draußen auf dem freien Feld standen.
When Joab saw that he would have to fight on both the front and the rear, he chose some of Israel’s elite troops and placed them under his personal command to fight the Arameans in the fields.
Als Joab sah, dass ihm ein Angriff von vorn und von hinten drohte, traf er eine Auswahl aus der Kerntruppe Israels und stellte sie gegen die Aramäer auf.
He left the rest of the army under the command of his brother Abishai, who was to attack the Ammonites.
Den Rest des Heeres unterstellte er seinem Bruder Abischai, damit sie sich den Ammonitern gegenüber aufstellten.
“If the Arameans are too strong for me, then come over and help me,” Joab told his brother. “And if the Ammonites are too strong for you, I will help you.
Joab sagte: Wenn die Aramäer stärker sind als ich, dann komm du mir zu Hilfe! Wenn die Ammoniter stärker sind als du, dann werde ich dir zu Hilfe kommen.
Be courageous! Let us fight bravely for our people and the cities of our God. May the LORD’s will be done.”
Sei tapfer! Wir wollen mutig für unser Volk und für die Städte unseres Gottes kämpfen. Der HERR aber möge tun, was er für recht hält.
When Joab and his troops attacked, the Arameans began to run away.
Dann griff Joab mit seinen Leuten die Aramäer an und diese ergriffen die Flucht vor ihm.
And when the Ammonites saw the Arameans running, they also ran from Abishai and retreated into the city. Then Joab returned to Jerusalem.
Als die Ammoniter sahen, dass die Aramäer flohen, ergriffen sie ebenfalls die Flucht vor seinem Bruder Abischai und zogen sich in die Stadt zurück. Joab kehrte heim nach Jerusalem.
Die Aramäer sahen, dass sie von Israel geschlagen waren. Sie schickten Boten und ließen die Aramäer, die diesseits des Stromes wohnten, ausrücken; an ihrer Spitze stand Schobach, der Oberbefehlshaber Hadad-Esers.
When David heard what was happening, he mobilized all Israel, crossed the Jordan River, and positioned his troops in battle formation. Then David engaged the Arameans in battle, and they fought against him.
Als man das David meldete, versammelte er ganz Israel, überschritt den Jordan, zog gegen sie und nahm ihnen gegenüber Aufstellung. Während er sich den Aramäern gegenüber zum Kampf aufstellte, eröffneten sie den Kampf.
But again the Arameans fled from the Israelites. This time David’s forces killed 7,000 charioteers and 40,000 foot soldiers, including Shobach, the commander of their army.
Doch sie mussten vor den Israeliten fliehen. David vernichtete siebentausend aramäische Kriegswagen und tötete vierzigtausend Mann von ihren Fußtruppen. Auch Schobach, den Oberbefehlshaber des Heeres, tötete er.
When Hadadezer’s allies saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they surrendered to David and became his subjects. After that, the Arameans were no longer willing to help the Ammonites.
Die Vasallen Hadad-Esers sahen nun ein, dass sie von den Israeliten besiegt waren. Sie schlossen Frieden mit David und unterwarfen sich ihm. Von da an hatten die Aramäer kein Verlangen mehr, den Ammonitern zu helfen.
