Job’s Final Speech

Job continued speaking:

Dann setzte Ijob seine Rede fort und sprach:

“I vow by the living God, who has taken away my rights,
by the Almighty who has embittered my soul —

So wahr Gott lebt, der mir mein Recht entzog, der Allmächtige, der meine Seele quälte:

As long as I live,
while I have breath from God,

Solange noch Atem in mir ist und Gottes Hauch in meiner Nase,

my lips will speak no evil,
and my tongue will speak no lies.

soll Unrecht nicht von meinen Lippen kommen noch meine Zunge Falsches reden.

I will never concede that you are right;
I will defend my integrity until I die.

Fern sei es mir, euch Recht zu geben, ich gebe, bis ich sterbe, meine Unschuld nicht preis.

I will maintain my innocence without wavering.
My conscience is clear for as long as I live.

An meinem Rechtsein halte ich fest und lasse es nicht; mein Herz schilt keinen meiner Tage.

“May my enemy be punished like the wicked,
my adversary like those who do evil.

Mein Feind sei wie ein Frevler, mein Gegner wie ein Bösewicht.

For what hope do the godless have when God cuts them off
and takes away their life?

Denn was ist des Ruchlosen Hoffen, wenn er dahingeht, wenn Gott das Leben von ihm nimmt?

Will God listen to their cry
when trouble comes upon them?

Wird Gott sein Schreien hören, wenn über ihn die Drangsal kommt?

Can they take delight in the Almighty?
Can they call to God at any time?

Kann er sich des Allmächtigen erfreuen und Gott anrufen zu jeder Zeit?

I will teach you about God’s power.
I will not conceal anything concerning the Almighty.

Ich will euch belehren über Gottes Tun, nicht verhehlen, was der Allmächtige plant.

But you have seen all this,
yet you say all these useless things to me.

Seht, ihr habt es alle selbst gesehen. Warum führt ihr nichtige Reden?

“This is what the wicked will receive from God;
this is their inheritance from the Almighty.

Das ist des Frevlers Anteil bei Gott, der Gewalttätigen Erbe, das sie vom Allmächtigen empfangen:

They may have many children,
but the children will die in war or starve to death.

Werden zahlreich seine Söhne, fürs Schwert sind sie bestimmt; nie werden seine Kinder satt an Brot.

Those who survive will die of a plague,
and not even their widows will mourn them.

Was übrig bleibt, wird durch den Tod begraben und seine Witwen weinen nicht.

“Evil people may have piles of money
and may store away mounds of clothing.

Häuft er auch Silber auf wie Staub und beschafft er sich Kleider wie Lehm:

But the righteous will wear that clothing,
and the innocent will divide that money.

Er schafft sie zwar an, doch anziehen wird sie der Gerechte, das Silber wird der Schuldlose erben.

The wicked build houses as fragile as a spider’s web,a
as flimsy as a shelter made of branches.

Er baut wie die Motte sein Haus und wie die Hütte, die der Wächter aufstellt.

The wicked go to bed rich
but wake to find that all their wealth is gone.

Reich legt er sich schlafen, nichts ist ihm genommen. Macht er die Augen auf, ist nichts mehr da.

Terror overwhelms them like a flood,
and they are blown away in the storms of the night.

Schrecken holt ihn ein wie eine Wasserflut, der Sturmwind trägt ihn fort bei Nacht.

The east wind carries them away, and they are gone.
It sweeps them away.

Der Ostwind hebt ihn hoch, er muss dahin, er weht ihn weg von seinem Ort.

It whirls down on them without mercy.
They struggle to flee from its power.

Er stürzt sich auf ihn schonungslos, seiner Gewalt will er entfliehen.

But everyone jeers at them
and mocks them.

Man klatscht über ihn in die Hände und pfeift ihn aus an seinem Ort.
