New Living Translation

King James Bible

  • For the choir director: A psalm of David.

O God, listen to my complaint.
Protect my life from my enemies’ threats.
  • The Hurtful Tongue

{To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.} Hear my voice, O God, in my prayer: preserve my life from fear of the enemy.
  • Hide me from the plots of this evil mob,
    from this gang of wrongdoers.
  • Hide me from the secret counsel of the wicked; from the insurrection of the workers of iniquity:
  • They sharpen their tongues like swords
and aim their bitter words like arrows.
  • Who whet their tongue like a sword, and bend their bows to shoot their arrows, even bitter words:
  • They shoot from ambush at the innocent,
    attacking suddenly and fearlessly.
  • That they may shoot in secret at the perfect: suddenly do they shoot at him, and fear not.
  • They encourage each other to do evil
and plan how to set their traps in secret.
“Who will ever notice?” they ask.
  • They encourage themselves in an evil matter: they commune of laying snares privily; they say, Who shall see them?
  • As they plot their crimes, they say,
“We have devised the perfect plan!”
Yes, the human heart and mind are cunning.
  • They search out iniquities; they accomplish a diligent search: both the inward thought of every one of them, and the heart, is deep.
  • But God himself will shoot them with his arrows,
    suddenly striking them down.
  • But God shall shoot at them with an arrow; suddenly shall they be wounded.
  • Their own tongues will ruin them,
and all who see them will shake their heads in scorn.
  • So they shall make their own tongue to fall upon themselves: all that see them shall flee away.
  • Then everyone will be afraid;
they will proclaim the mighty acts of God
and realize all the amazing things he does.
  • And all men shall fear, and shall declare the work of God; for they shall wisely consider of his doing.
  • The godly will rejoice in the LORD
    and find shelter in him.
And those who do what is right
    will praise him.
  • The righteous shall be glad in the LORD, and shall trust in him; and all the upright in heart shall glory.
