New Living Translation

New King James Version

  • A psalma of Ethan the Ezrahite.

    I will sing of the LORD’s unfailing love forever!
    Young and old will hear of your faithfulness.
  • Remembering the Covenant with David, and Sorrow for Lost Blessings

    A [a]Contemplation of Ethan the Ezrahite.

    I will sing of the mercies of the Lord forever;
    With my mouth will I make known Your faithfulness to all generations.
  • Your unfailing love will last forever.
    Your faithfulness is as enduring as the heavens.
  • For I have said, “Mercy shall be built up forever;
    Your faithfulness You shall establish in the very heavens.”
  • The LORD said, “I have made a covenant with David, my chosen servant.
    I have sworn this oath to him:
  • “I have made a covenant with My chosen,
    I have sworn to My servant David:
  • ‘I will establish your descendants as kings forever;
    they will sit on your throne from now until eternity.’”
    Interlude
  • ‘Your seed I will establish forever,
    And build up your throne to all generations.’ ” Selah
  • All heaven will praise your great wonders, LORD;
    myriads of angels will praise you for your faithfulness.
  • And the heavens will praise Your wonders, O Lord;
    Your faithfulness also in the assembly of the saints.
  • For who in all of heaven can compare with the LORD?
    What mightiest angel is anything like the LORD?
  • For who in the heavens can be compared to the Lord?
    Who among the sons of the mighty can be likened to the Lord?
  • The highest angelic powers stand in awe of God.
    He is far more awesome than all who surround his throne.
  • God is greatly to be feared in the assembly of the saints,
    And to be held in reverence by all those around Him.
  • O LORD God of Heaven’s Armies!
    Where is there anyone as mighty as you, O LORD?
    You are entirely faithful.
  • O Lord God of hosts,
    Who is mighty like You, O Lord?
    Your faithfulness also surrounds You.
  • You rule the oceans.
    You subdue their storm-tossed waves.
  • You rule the raging of the sea;
    When its waves rise, You still them.
  • You crushed the great sea monster.b
    You scattered your enemies with your mighty arm.
  • You have broken [b]Rahab in pieces, as one who is slain;
    You have scattered Your enemies with Your mighty arm.
  • The heavens are yours, and the earth is yours;
    everything in the world is yours — you created it all.
  • The heavens are Yours, the earth also is Yours;
    The world and all its fullness, You have founded them.
  • You created north and south.
    Mount Tabor and Mount Hermon praise your name.
  • The north and the south, You have created them;
    Tabor and Hermon rejoice in Your name.
  • Powerful is your arm!
    Strong is your hand!
    Your right hand is lifted high in glorious strength.
  • You have a mighty arm;
    Strong is Your hand, and high is Your right hand.
  • Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne.
    Unfailing love and truth walk before you as attendants.
  • Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne;
    Mercy and truth go before Your face.
  • Happy are those who hear the joyful call to worship,
    for they will walk in the light of your presence, LORD.
  • Blessed are the people who know the joyful sound!
    They walk, O Lord, in the light of Your countenance.
  • They rejoice all day long in your wonderful reputation.
    They exult in your righteousness.
  • In Your name they rejoice all day long,
    And in Your righteousness they are exalted.
  • You are their glorious strength.
    It pleases you to make us strong.
  • For You are the glory of their strength,
    And in Your favor our [c]horn is exalted.
  • Yes, our protection comes from the LORD,
    and he, the Holy One of Israel, has given us our king.
  • For our shield belongs to the Lord,
    And our king to the Holy One of Israel.
  • Long ago you spoke in a vision to your faithful people.
    You said, “I have raised up a warrior.
    I have selected him from the common people to be king.
  • Then You spoke in a vision to Your [d]holy one,
    And said: “I have given help to one who is mighty;
    I have exalted one chosen from the people.
  • I have found my servant David.
    I have anointed him with my holy oil.
  • I have found My servant David;
    With My holy oil I have anointed him,
  • I will steady him with my hand;
    with my powerful arm I will make him strong.
  • With whom My hand shall be established;
    Also My arm shall strengthen him.
  • His enemies will not defeat him,
    nor will the wicked overpower him.
  • The enemy shall not [e]outwit him,
    Nor the son of wickedness afflict him.
  • I will beat down his adversaries before him
    and destroy those who hate him.
  • I will beat down his foes before his face,
    And plague those who hate him.
  • My faithfulness and unfailing love will be with him,
    and by my authority he will grow in power.
  • “But My faithfulness and My mercy shall be with him,
    And in My name his horn shall be exalted.
  • I will extend his rule over the sea,
    his dominion over the rivers.
  • Also I will set his hand over the sea,
    And his right hand over the rivers.
  • And he will call out to me, ‘You are my Father,
    my God, and the Rock of my salvation.’
  • He shall cry to Me, ‘You are my Father,
    My God, and the rock of my salvation.’
  • I will make him my firstborn son,
    the mightiest king on earth.
  • Also I will make him My firstborn,
    The highest of the kings of the earth.
  • I will love him and be kind to him forever;
    my covenant with him will never end.
  • My mercy I will keep for him forever,
    And My covenant shall stand firm with him.
  • I will preserve an heir for him;
    his throne will be as endless as the days of heaven.
  • His seed also I will make to endure forever,
    And his throne as the days of heaven.
  • But if his descendants forsake my instructions
    and fail to obey my regulations,
  • “If his sons forsake My law
    And do not walk in My judgments,
  • if they do not obey my decrees
    and fail to keep my commands,
  • If they [f]break My statutes
    And do not keep My commandments,
  • then I will punish their sin with the rod,
    and their disobedience with beating.
  • Then I will punish their transgression with the rod,
    And their iniquity with stripes.
  • But I will never stop loving him
    nor fail to keep my promise to him.
  • Nevertheless My lovingkindness I will not [g]utterly take from him,
    Nor [h]allow My faithfulness to fail.
  • No, I will not break my covenant;
    I will not take back a single word I said.
  • My covenant I will not break,
    Nor alter the word that has gone out of My lips.
  • I have sworn an oath to David,
    and in my holiness I cannot lie:
  • Once I have sworn by My holiness;
    I will not lie to David:
  • His dynasty will go on forever;
    his kingdom will endure as the sun.
  • His seed shall endure forever,
    And his throne as the sun before Me;
  • It will be as eternal as the moon,
    my faithful witness in the sky!”
    Interlude
  • It shall be established forever like the moon,
    Even like the faithful witness in the sky.” Selah
  • But now you have rejected him and cast him off.
    You are angry with your anointed king.
  • But You have cast off and abhorred,[i]
    You have been furious with Your [j]anointed.
  • You have renounced your covenant with him;
    you have thrown his crown in the dust.
  • You have renounced the covenant of Your servant;
    You have [k]profaned his crown by casting it to the ground.
  • You have broken down the walls protecting him
    and ruined every fort defending him.
  • You have broken down all his hedges;
    You have brought his [l]strongholds to ruin.
  • Everyone who comes along has robbed him,
    and he has become a joke to his neighbors.
  • All who pass by the way plunder him;
    He is a reproach to his neighbors.
  • You have strengthened his enemies
    and made them all rejoice.
  • You have exalted the right hand of his adversaries;
    You have made all his enemies rejoice.
  • You have made his sword useless
    and refused to help him in battle.
  • You have also turned back the edge of his sword,
    And have not sustained him in the battle.
  • You have ended his splendor
    and overturned his throne.
  • You have made his [m]glory cease,
    And cast his throne down to the ground.
  • You have made him old before his time
    and publicly disgraced him.
    Interlude
  • The days of his youth You have shortened;
    You have covered him with shame. Selah
  • O LORD, how long will this go on?
    Will you hide yourself forever?
    How long will your anger burn like fire?
  • How long, Lord?
    Will You hide Yourself forever?
    Will Your wrath burn like fire?
  • Remember how short my life is,
    how empty and futile this human existence!
  • Remember how short my time is;
    For what futility have You created all the children of men?
  • No one can live forever; all will die.
    No one can escape the power of the grave.c
    Interlude
  • What man can live and not [n]see death?
    Can he deliver his life from the power of [o]the grave? Selah
  • Lord, where is your unfailing love?
    You promised it to David with a faithful pledge.
  • Lord, where are Your former lovingkindnesses,
    Which You swore to David in Your truth?
  • Consider, Lord, how your servants are disgraced!
    I carry in my heart the insults of so many people.
  • Remember, Lord, the reproach of Your servants —
    How I bear in my bosom the reproach of all the many peoples,
  • Your enemies have mocked me, O LORD;
    they mock your anointed king wherever he goes.
  • With which Your enemies have reproached, O Lord,
    With which they have reproached the footsteps of Your [p]anointed.
  • Praise the LORD forever!
    Amen and amen!
  • Blessed be the Lord forevermore!
    Amen and Amen.
