  • Book Four
    (Psalms 90–106)

    A prayer of Moses, the man of God.

    Lord, through all the generations
    you have been our home!
  • Lord, You have been our dwelling place in all generations.
  • Before the mountains were born,
    before you gave birth to the earth and the world,
    from beginning to end, you are God.
  • Before the mountains were born
    Or You gave birth to the earth and the world,
    Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.
  • You turn people back to dust, saying,
    “Return to dust, you mortals!”
  • You turn man back into dust
    And say, “Return, O children of men.”
  • For you, a thousand years are as a passing day,
    as brief as a few night hours.
  • For a thousand years in Your sight
    Are like yesterday when it passes by,
    Or as a watch in the night.
  • You sweep people away like dreams that disappear.
    They are like grass that springs up in the morning.
  • You have swept them away like a flood, they fall asleep;
    In the morning they are like grass which sprouts anew.
  • In the morning it blooms and flourishes,
    but by evening it is dry and withered.
  • In the morning it flourishes and sprouts anew;
    Toward evening it fades and withers away.
  • We wither beneath your anger;
    we are overwhelmed by your fury.
  • For we have been consumed by Your anger
    And by Your wrath we have been dismayed.
  • You spread out our sins before you —
    our secret sins — and you see them all.
  • You have placed our iniquities before You,
    Our secret sins in the light of Your presence.
  • We live our lives beneath your wrath,
    ending our years with a groan.
  • For all our days have declined in Your fury;
    We have finished our years like a sigh.
  • Seventy years are given to us!
    Some even live to eighty.
    But even the best years are filled with pain and trouble;
    soon they disappear, and we fly away.
  • As for the days of our life, they contain seventy years,
    Or if due to strength, eighty years,
    Yet their pride is but labor and sorrow;
    For soon it is gone and we fly away.
  • Who can comprehend the power of your anger?
    Your wrath is as awesome as the fear you deserve.
  • Who understands the power of Your anger
    And Your fury, according to the fear that is due You?
  • Teach us to realize the brevity of life,
    so that we may grow in wisdom.
  • So teach us to number our days,
    That we may present to You a heart of wisdom.
  • O LORD, come back to us!
    How long will you delay?
    Take pity on your servants!
  • Do return, O LORD; how long will it be?
    And be sorry for Your servants.
  • Satisfy us each morning with your unfailing love,
    so we may sing for joy to the end of our lives.
  • O satisfy us in the morning with Your lovingkindness,
    That we may sing for joy and be glad all our days.
  • Give us gladness in proportion to our former misery!
    Replace the evil years with good.
  • Make us glad according to the days You have afflicted us,
    And the years we have seen evil.
  • Let us, your servants, see you work again;
    let our children see your glory.
  • Let Your work appear to Your servants
    And Your majesty to their children.
  • And may the Lord our God show us his approval
    and make our efforts successful.
    Yes, make our efforts successful!
  • Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us;
    And confirm for us the work of our hands;
    Yes, confirm the work of our hands.
