The Israelites in Egypt

Das sind die Namen der Söhne Israels, die nach Ägypten gekommen waren — mit Jakob waren sie gekommen, jeder mit seiner Familie:
Es waren siebzig Personen; sie alle stammten von Jakob ab. Josef aber war bereits in Ägypten.
In time, Joseph and all of his brothers died, ending that entire generation.
Josef, alle seine Brüder und seine Zeitgenossen waren gestorben.
But their descendants, the Israelites, had many children and grandchildren. In fact, they multiplied so greatly that they became extremely powerful and filled the land.
Aber die Söhne Israels waren fruchtbar, sodass das Land von ihnen wimmelte. Sie vermehrten sich und wurden überaus stark; sie bevölkerten das Land.
Eventually, a new king came to power in Egypt who knew nothing about Joseph or what he had done.
In Ägypten kam ein neuer König an die Macht, der Josef nicht gekannt hatte.
He said to his people, “Look, the people of Israel now outnumber us and are stronger than we are.
Er sagte zu seinem Volk: Seht nur, das Volk der Israeliten ist größer und stärker als wir.
Gebt Acht! Wir müssen überlegen, was wir gegen es tun können, damit es sich nicht weiter vermehrt. Wenn ein Krieg ausbricht, könnte es sich unseren Feinden anschließen, gegen uns kämpfen und aus dem Lande hinaufziehen.
So the Egyptians made the Israelites their slaves. They appointed brutal slave drivers over them, hoping to wear them down with crushing labor. They forced them to build the cities of Pithom and Rameses as supply centers for the king.
Da setzte man Fronvögte über es ein, um es durch schwere Arbeit unter Druck zu setzen. Es musste für den Pharao die Städte Pitom und Ramses als Vorratslager bauen.
But the more the Egyptians oppressed them, the more the Israelites multiplied and spread, and the more alarmed the Egyptians became.
Je mehr man es aber unter Druck hielt, umso stärker vermehrte es sich und breitete sich aus. Da packte sie das Grauen vor den Israeliten.
So the Egyptians worked the people of Israel without mercy.
Die Ägypter gingen hart gegen die Israeliten vor und machten sie zu Sklaven.
They made their lives bitter, forcing them to mix mortar and make bricks and do all the work in the fields. They were ruthless in all their demands.
Sie machten ihnen das Leben schwer durch harte Arbeit mit Lehm und Ziegeln und durch alle möglichen Arbeiten auf den Feldern. So wurden die Israeliten zu harter Sklavenarbeit gezwungen.
Then Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, gave this order to the Hebrew midwives, Shiphrah and Puah:

Wenn ihr den Hebräerinnen Geburtshilfe leistet, dann achtet auf das Geschlecht! Ist es ein Knabe, so lasst ihn sterben! Ist es ein Mädchen, dann kann es am Leben bleiben.
But because the midwives feared God, they refused to obey the king’s orders. They allowed the boys to live, too.
Die Hebammen aber fürchteten Gott und taten nicht, was ihnen der König von Ägypten gesagt hatte, sondern ließen die Kinder am Leben.
So the king of Egypt called for the midwives. “Why have you done this?” he demanded. “Why have you allowed the boys to live?”
Da rief der König von Ägypten die Hebammen zu sich und sagte zu ihnen: Warum tut ihr das und lasst die Kinder am Leben?
“The Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women,” the midwives replied. “They are more vigorous and have their babies so quickly that we cannot get there in time.”
Die Hebammen antworteten dem Pharao: Die hebräischen Frauen sind nicht wie die ägyptischen, denn sie sind voller Leben. Bevor die Hebamme zu ihnen kommt, haben sie schon geboren.
So God was good to the midwives, and the Israelites continued to multiply, growing more and more powerful.
Gott verhalf den Hebammen zu Glück; das Volk aber vermehrte sich und wurde sehr stark.
And because the midwives feared God, he gave them families of their own.
Weil die Hebammen Gott fürchteten, gab er ihnen Nachkommen.
