Dann redete Gott. Er sprach:
“I am the LORD your God, who rescued you from the land of Egypt, the place of your slavery.
»Ich bin der HERR, dein Gott; ich habe dich aus der Sklaverei in Ägypten befreit.
“You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind or an image of anything in the heavens or on the earth or in the sea.
Fertige dir keine Götzenstatue an, auch kein Abbild von irgendetwas am Himmel, auf der Erde oder im Meer.
You must not bow down to them or worship them, for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for any other gods. I lay the sins of the parents upon their children; the entire family is affected — even children in the third and fourth generations of those who reject me.
Wirf dich nicht vor solchen Götterfiguren nieder, bring ihnen keine Opfer dar! Denn ich bin der HERR, dein Gott. Ich dulde keinen neben mir! Wer mich verachtet, den werde ich bestrafen. Sogar seine Kinder, Enkel und Urenkel werden die Folgen spüren!
Doch denen, die mich lieben und sich an meine Gebote halten, bin ich gnädig. Sie und ihre Nachkommen werden meine Liebe über Tausende von Generationen erfahren.
“You must not misuse the name of the LORD your God. The LORD will not let you go unpunished if you misuse his name.
Du sollst meinen Namen nicht missbrauchen, denn ich bin der HERR, dein Gott! Ich lasse keinen ungestraft, der das tut!
“Remember to observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.
Denke an den Sabbat als einen Tag, der mir allein geweiht ist!
You have six days each week for your ordinary work,
Sechs Tage sollst du deine Arbeit verrichten,
but the seventh day is a Sabbath day of rest dedicated to the LORD your God. On that day no one in your household may do any work. This includes you, your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, your livestock, and any foreigners living among you.
aber der siebte Tag ist ein Ruhetag, der mir, dem HERRN, deinem Gott, gehört. An diesem Tag sollst du nicht arbeiten, weder du noch deine Kinder, weder dein Knecht noch deine Magd, auch nicht deine Tiere oder der Fremde, der bei dir lebt.
For in six days the LORD made the heavens, the earth, the sea, and everything in them; but on the seventh day he rested. That is why the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and set it apart as holy.
Denn in sechs Tagen habe ich, der HERR, den Himmel, die Erde und das Meer geschaffen und alles, was lebt. Aber am siebten Tag ruhte ich. Darum habe ich den Sabbat gesegnet und für heilig erklärt.
“Honor your father and mother. Then you will live a long, full life in the land the LORD your God is giving you.
Ehre deinen Vater und deine Mutter, dann wirst du lange in dem Land leben, das ich, der HERR, dein Gott, dir gebe.
“You must not testify falsely against your neighbor.
Sag nichts Unwahres über deinen Mitmenschen!
“You must not covet your neighbor’s house. You must not covet your neighbor’s wife, male or female servant, ox or donkey, or anything else that belongs to your neighbor.”
Du sollst nicht begehren, was deinem Mitmenschen gehört: weder sein Haus noch seine Frau, seinen Knecht oder seine Magd, Rinder oder Esel oder irgendetwas anderes, was ihm gehört.«
When the people heard the thunder and the loud blast of the ram’s horn, and when they saw the flashes of lightning and the smoke billowing from the mountain, they stood at a distance, trembling with fear.
Als die Israeliten den Donner und den Klang des Horns hörten, als sie die Blitze und den rauchenden Berg sahen, zitterten sie vor Angst und zogen sich vom Fuß des Berges zurück.
And they said to Moses, “You speak to us, and we will listen. But don’t let God speak directly to us, or we will die!”
Sie sagten zu Mose: »Rede nur du mit uns, wir wollen auf dich hören! Gott selbst aber soll nicht mehr zu uns sprechen, sonst sterben wir noch!«
“Don’t be afraid,” Moses answered them, “for God has come in this way to test you, and so that your fear of him will keep you from sinning!”
Doch Mose beruhigte sie: »Habt keine Angst! Gott ist gekommen, um euch auf die Probe zu stellen. Er will, dass ihr Ehrfurcht vor ihm habt und keine Schuld auf euch ladet.«
As the people stood in the distance, Moses approached the dark cloud where God was.
Das Volk blieb in einiger Entfernung vom Berg stehen. Nur Mose näherte sich der dunklen Wolke, in der Gott war.
Proper Use of Altars
And the LORD said to Moses, “Say this to the people of Israel: You saw for yourselves that I spoke to you from heaven.
Der HERR sprach zu Mose: »Sag den Israeliten: Ihr habt selbst gesehen, wie ich vom Himmel her zu euch geredet habe.
Remember, you must not make any idols of silver or gold to rival me.
Macht euch keine Götterfiguren aus Silber oder Gold, die ihr außer mir noch verehrt!
“Build for me an altar made of earth, and offer your sacrifices to me — your burnt offerings and peace offerings, your sheep and goats, and your cattle. Build my altar wherever I cause my name to be remembered, and I will come to you and bless you.
Errichtet stattdessen für mich einen Altar aus Erde und bringt auf ihm Schafe, Ziegen oder Rinder als Brand- und Friedensopfer dar! Ich selbst werde euch zeigen, wo ihr dies tun und mich anbeten sollt. Dann will ich zu euch kommen und euch segnen.
If you use stones to build my altar, use only natural, uncut stones. Do not shape the stones with a tool, for that would make the altar unfit for holy use.
Wenn ihr mir einen Altar aus Steinen errichtet, so verwendet dazu nur unbehauene Feldsteine. Denn ihr würdet den Altar entweihen, sobald ihr ihn mit dem Meißel bearbeitet.
