What do people really get for all their hard work?
Was also hat der Mensch davon, dass er sich abmüht?
I have seen the burden God has placed on us all.
Ich habe erkannt, was für eine schwere Last das ist, die Gott den Menschen auferlegt hat.
Yet God has made everything beautiful for its own time. He has planted eternity in the human heart, but even so, people cannot see the whole scope of God’s work from beginning to end.
Für alles auf der Welt hat Gott schon vorher die rechte Zeit bestimmt. In das Herz des Menschen hat er den Wunsch gelegt, nach dem zu fragen, was ewig ist. Aber der Mensch kann Gottes Werke nie voll und ganz begreifen.
So I concluded there is nothing better than to be happy and enjoy ourselves as long as we can.
So kam ich zu dem Schluss, dass es für den Menschen nichts Besseres gibt, als fröhlich zu sein und das Leben zu genießen.
And people should eat and drink and enjoy the fruits of their labor, for these are gifts from God.
Wenn er zu essen und zu trinken hat und sich über die Früchte seiner Arbeit freuen kann, ist das Gottes Geschenk.
And I know that whatever God does is final. Nothing can be added to it or taken from it. God’s purpose is that people should fear him.
Ich begriff, dass Gottes Werk für immer bestehen wird. Niemand kann etwas hinzufügen oder wegnehmen. So hat Gott es eingerichtet, damit die Menschen Ehrfurcht vor ihm haben.
What is happening now has happened before, and what will happen in the future has happened before, because God makes the same things happen over and over again.
Was immer sich auch ereignet oder noch ereignen wird — alles ist schon einmal da gewesen. Gott lässt von neuem geschehen, was in der Vergangenheit bereits geschah.
The Injustices of Life
I also noticed that under the sun there is evil in the courtroom. Yes, even the courts of law are corrupt!
Ich habe noch etwas auf dieser Welt beobachtet: Wo man eigentlich Recht sprechen und gerechte Urteile fällen sollte, herrscht schreiende Ungerechtigkeit.
I said to myself, “In due season God will judge everyone, both good and bad, for all their deeds.”
Doch dann dachte ich: Am Ende wird Gott den Schuldigen richten und dem Unschuldigen zum Recht verhelfen. Denn auch dafür hat er eine Zeit vorherbestimmt, so wie für alles auf der Welt.
I also thought about the human condition — how God proves to people that they are like animals.
Ich habe begriffen, dass Gott die Menschen prüft. Sie sollen erkennen: Nichts unterscheidet sie von den Tieren.
Denn auf Mensch und Tier wartet das gleiche Schicksal: Beiden gab Gott das Leben, und beide müssen sterben. Der Mensch hat dem Tier nichts voraus, denn auch er ist vergänglich.
Both go to the same place — they came from dust and they return to dust.
Sie alle gehen an denselben Ort — aus dem Staub der Erde sind sie entstanden, und zum Staub der Erde kehren sie zurück.
For who can prove that the human spirit goes up and the spirit of animals goes down into the earth?
Wer weiß schon, ob der Geist des Menschen wirklich nach oben steigt, der Geist des Tieres aber in die Erde hinabsinkt?
So I saw that there is nothing better for people than to be happy in their work. That is our lot in life. And no one can bring us back to see what happens after we die.
So erkannte ich: Ein Mensch kann nichts Besseres tun, als die Früchte seiner Arbeit zu genießen — das ist es, was Gott ihm zugeteilt hat. Denn niemand kann sagen, was nach dem Tod geschehen wird!
