New Living Translation

New King James Version

  • Sins Requiring a Guilt Offering

aThen the LORD said to Moses,
  • Laws About the Burnt Offering, the Grain Offering, and the Sin Offering

And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:
  • “Suppose one of you sins against your associate and is unfaithful to the LORD. Suppose you cheat in a deal involving a security deposit, or you steal or commit fraud,
  • “If a person sins and commits a trespass against the Lord by lying[a] to his neighbor about what was delivered to him for safekeeping, or about [b]a pledge, or about a robbery, or if he has extorted from his neighbor,
  • or you find lost property and lie about it, or you lie while swearing to tell the truth, or you commit any other such sin.
  • or if he has found what was lost and lies concerning it, and swears falsely — in any one of these things that a man may do in which he sins:
  • If you have sinned in any of these ways, you are guilty. You must give back whatever you stole, or the money you took by extortion, or the security deposit, or the lost property you found,
  • then it shall be, because he has sinned and is guilty, that he shall [c]restore what he has stolen, or the thing which he has extorted, or what was delivered to him for safekeeping, or the lost thing which he found,
  • or anything obtained by swearing falsely. You must make restitution by paying the full price plus an additional 20 percent to the person you have harmed. On the same day you must present a guilt offering.
  • or all that about which he has sworn falsely. He shall restore its full value, add one-fifth more to it, and give it to whomever it belongs, on the day of his trespass offering.
  • As a guilt offering to the LORD, you must bring to the priest your own ram with no defects, or you may buy one of equal value.
  • And he shall bring his trespass offering to the Lord, a ram without blemish from the flock, with your [d]valuation, as a trespass offering, to the priest.
  • Through this process, the priest will purify you before the LORD, making you right with him,b and you will be forgiven for any of these sins you have committed.”
  • So the priest shall make atonement for him before the Lord, and he shall be forgiven for any one of these things that he may have done in which he trespasses.”

  • Further Instructions for the Burnt Offering

cThen the LORD said to Moses,
  • The Law of the Burnt Offering

Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,
  • “Give Aaron and his sons the following instructions regarding the burnt offering. The burnt offering must be left on top of the altar until the next morning, and the fire on the altar must be kept burning all night.
  • “Command Aaron and his sons, saying, ‘This is the law of the burnt offering: The burnt offering shall be on the hearth upon the altar all night until morning, and the fire of the altar shall be kept burning on it.
  • In the morning, after the priest on duty has put on his official linen clothing and linen undergarments, he must clean out the ashes of the burnt offering and put them beside the altar.
  • And the priest shall put on his linen garment, and his linen trousers he shall put on his body, and take up the ashes of the burnt offering which the fire has consumed on the altar, and he shall put them beside the altar.
  • Then he must take off these garments, change back into his regular clothes, and carry the ashes outside the camp to a place that is ceremonially clean.
  • Then he shall take off his garments, put on other garments, and carry the ashes outside the camp to a clean place.
  • Meanwhile, the fire on the altar must be kept burning; it must never go out. Each morning the priest will add fresh wood to the fire and arrange the burnt offering on it. He will then burn the fat of the peace offerings on it.
  • And the fire on the altar shall be kept burning on it; it shall not be put out. And the priest shall burn wood on it every morning, and lay the burnt offering in order on it; and he shall burn on it the fat of the peace offerings.
  • Remember, the fire must be kept burning on the altar at all times. It must never go out.
  • A fire shall always be burning on the altar; it shall never go out.
