Jesus Sends Out the Twelve Apostles

Jesus called his twelve disciples together and gave them authority to cast out evila spirits and to heal every kind of disease and illness.

The Twelve Apostles

And when He had called His twelve disciples to Him, He gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease.

Here are the names of the twelve apostles:
first, Simon (also called Peter),
then Andrew (Peter’s brother),
James (son of Zebedee),
John (James’s brother),

Now the names of the twelve apostles are these: first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother;

Philip,
Bartholomew,
Thomas,
Matthew (the tax collector),
James (son of Alphaeus),
Thaddaeus,b

Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and [a]Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus;

Simon (the zealotc),
Judas Iscariot (who later betrayed him).

Simon the [b]Cananite, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed Him.

Jesus sent out the twelve apostles with these instructions: “Don’t go to the Gentiles or the Samaritans,

Sending Out the Twelve

These twelve Jesus sent out and commanded them, saying: “Do not go into the way of the Gentiles, and do not enter a city of the Samaritans.

6

but only to the people of Israel — God’s lost sheep.

But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

7

Go and announce to them that the Kingdom of Heaven is near.d

7

And as you go, preach, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven [c]is at hand.’

8

Heal the sick, raise the dead, cure those with leprosy, and cast out demons. Give as freely as you have received!

Heal the sick, [d]cleanse the lepers, [e]raise the dead, cast out demons. Freely you have received, freely give.

9

“Don’t take any money in your money belts — no gold, silver, or even copper coins.

Provide neither gold nor silver nor copper in your money belts,

10

Don’t carry a traveler’s bag with a change of clothes and sandals or even a walking stick. Don’t hesitate to accept hospitality, because those who work deserve to be fed.

nor bag for your journey, nor two tunics, nor sandals, nor staffs; for a worker is worthy of his food.

11

“Whenever you enter a city or village, search for a worthy person and stay in his home until you leave town.

“Now whatever city or town you enter, inquire who in it is worthy, and stay there till you go out.

12

When you enter the home, give it your blessing.

12

And when you go into a household, greet it.

13

If it turns out to be a worthy home, let your blessing stand; if it is not, take back the blessing.

13

If the household is worthy, let your peace come upon it. But if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you.

14

If any household or town refuses to welcome you or listen to your message, shake its dust from your feet as you leave.

14

And whoever will not receive you nor hear your words, when you depart from that house or city, shake off the dust from your feet.

15

I tell you the truth, the wicked cities of Sodom and Gomorrah will be better off than such a town on the judgment day.

15

Assuredly, I say to you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city!

16

“Look, I am sending you out as sheep among wolves. So be as shrewd as snakes and harmless as doves.

Persecutions Are Coming

“Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents and harmless[f] as doves.

17

But beware! For you will be handed over to the courts and will be flogged with whips in the synagogues.

But beware of men, for they will deliver you up to councils and scourge you in their synagogues.

18

You will stand trial before governors and kings because you are my followers. But this will be your opportunity to tell the rulers and other unbelievers about me.e

18

You will be brought before governors and kings for My sake, as a testimony to them and to the Gentiles.

19

When you are arrested, don’t worry about how to respond or what to say. God will give you the right words at the right time.

19

But when they deliver you up, do not worry about how or what you should speak. For it will be given to you in that hour what you should speak;

20

For it is not you who will be speaking — it will be the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.

20

for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you.

21

“A brother will betray his brother to death, a father will betray his own child, and children will rebel against their parents and cause them to be killed.

21

“Now brother will deliver up brother to death, and a father his child; and children will rise up against parents and cause them to be put to death.

22

And all nations will hate you because you are my followers.f But everyone who endures to the end will be saved.

22

And you will be hated by all for My name’s sake. But he who endures to the end will be saved.

23

When you are persecuted in one town, flee to the next. I tell you the truth, the Son of Mang will return before you have reached all the towns of Israel.

23

When they persecute you in this city, flee to another. For assuredly, I say to you, you will not have gone through the cities of Israel before the Son of Man comes.

24

“Studentsh are not greater than their teacher, and slaves are not greater than their master.

24

“A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master.

25

Students are to be like their teacher, and slaves are to be like their master. And since I, the master of the household, have been called the prince of demons,i the members of my household will be called by even worse names!

25

It is enough for a disciple that he be like his teacher, and a servant like his master. If they have called the master of the house [g]Beelzebub, how much more will they call those of his household!

26

“But don’t be afraid of those who threaten you. For the time is coming when everything that is covered will be revealed, and all that is secret will be made known to all.

26

Therefore do not fear them. For there is nothing covered that will not be revealed, and hidden that will not be known.

27

What I tell you now in the darkness, shout abroad when daybreak comes. What I whisper in your ear, shout from the housetops for all to hear!

Jesus Teaches the Fear of God

“Whatever I tell you in the dark, speak in the light; and what you hear in the ear, preach on the housetops.

28

“Don’t be afraid of those who want to kill your body; they cannot touch your soul. Fear only God, who can destroy both soul and body in hell.j

28

And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in [h]hell.

29

What is the price of two sparrows — one copper coink? But not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it.

29

Are not two sparrows sold for a [i]copper coin? And not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father’s will.

30

And the very hairs on your head are all numbered.

30

But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.

31

So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows.

31

Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.

32

“Everyone who acknowledges me publicly here on earth, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven.

Confess Christ Before Men

“Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven.

33

But everyone who denies me here on earth, I will also deny before my Father in heaven.

33

But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven.

34

“Don’t imagine that I came to bring peace to the earth! I came not to bring peace, but a sword.

Christ Brings Division

“Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword.

35

‘I have come to set a man against his father,
a daughter against her mother,
and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.

35

For I have come to ‘set[j] a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law’;

36

Your enemies will be right in your own household!’l

36

and ‘a man’s enemies will be those of his own household.’

37

“If you love your father or mother more than you love me, you are not worthy of being mine; or if you love your son or daughter more than me, you are not worthy of being mine.

37

He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me.

38

If you refuse to take up your cross and follow me, you are not worthy of being mine.

38

And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me.

39

If you cling to your life, you will lose it; but if you give up your life for me, you will find it.

39

He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for My sake will find it.

40

“Anyone who receives you receives me, and anyone who receives me receives the Father who sent me.

40

A Cup of Cold Water

“He who receives you receives Me, and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me.

41

If you receive a prophet as one who speaks for God,m you will be given the same reward as a prophet. And if you receive righteous people because of their righteousness, you will be given a reward like theirs.

41

He who receives a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward. And he who receives a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man’s reward.

42

And if you give even a cup of cold water to one of the least of my followers, you will surely be rewarded.”

42

And whoever gives one of these little ones only a cup of cold water in the name of a disciple, assuredly, I say to you, he shall by no means lose his reward.”
