New Living Translation

New King James Version

  • The Resurrection

But very early on Sunday morninga the women went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared.
  • He Is Risen

Now on the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they, [a]and certain other women with them, came to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared.
  • They found that the stone had been rolled away from the entrance.
  • But they found the stone rolled away from the tomb.
  • So they went in, but they didn’t find the body of the Lord Jesus.
  • Then they went in and did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.
  • As they stood there puzzled, two men suddenly appeared to them, clothed in dazzling robes.
  • And it happened, as they were [b]greatly perplexed about this, that behold, two men stood by them in shining garments.
  • The women were terrified and bowed with their faces to the ground. Then the men asked, “Why are you looking among the dead for someone who is alive?
  • Then, as they were afraid and bowed their faces to the earth, they said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead?
  • He isn’t here! He is risen from the dead! Remember what he told you back in Galilee,
  • He is not here, but is risen! Remember how He spoke to you when He was still in Galilee,
  • that the Son of Manb must be betrayed into the hands of sinful men and be crucified, and that he would rise again on the third day.”
  • saying, ‘The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.’ ”
  • Then they remembered that he had said this.
  • And they remembered His words.
  • So they rushed back from the tomb to tell his eleven disciples — and everyone else — what had happened.
  • Then they returned from the tomb and told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest.
  • It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and several other women who told the apostles what had happened.
  • It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them, who told these things to the apostles.
  • But the story sounded like nonsense to the men, so they didn’t believe it.
  • And their words seemed to them like [c]idle tales, and they did not believe them.
  • However, Peter jumped up and ran to the tomb to look. Stooping, he peered in and saw the empty linen wrappings; then he went home again, wondering what had happened.
  • But Peter arose and ran to the tomb; and stooping down, he saw the linen cloths [d]lying by themselves; and he departed, marveling to himself at what had happened.

  • The Walk to Emmaus

That same day two of Jesus’ followers were walking to the village of Emmaus, seven milesc from Jerusalem.
  • The Road to Emmaus

Now behold, two of them were traveling that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was [e]seven miles from Jerusalem.
  • As they walked along they were talking about everything that had happened.
  • And they talked together of all these things which had happened.
  • As they talked and discussed these things, Jesus himself suddenly came and began walking with them.
  • So it was, while they conversed and reasoned, that Jesus Himself drew near and went with them.
  • But God kept them from recognizing him.
  • But their eyes were restrained, so that they did not know Him.
  • He asked them, “What are you discussing so intently as you walk along?”
They stopped short, sadness written across their faces.
  • And He said to them, “What kind of conversation is this that you have with one another as you [f]walk and are sad?”
  • Then one of them, Cleopas, replied, “You must be the only person in Jerusalem who hasn’t heard about all the things that have happened there the last few days.”
  • Then the one whose name was Cleopas answered and said to Him, “Are You the only stranger in Jerusalem, and have You not known the things which happened there in these days?”
  • “What things?” Jesus asked.
“The things that happened to Jesus, the man from Nazareth,” they said. “He was a prophet who did powerful miracles, and he was a mighty teacher in the eyes of God and all the people.
  • And He said to them, “What things?”
So they said to Him, “The things concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a Prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people,
  • But our leading priests and other religious leaders handed him over to be condemned to death, and they crucified him.
  • and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered Him to be condemned to death, and crucified Him.
  • We had hoped he was the Messiah who had come to rescue Israel. This all happened three days ago.
  • But we were hoping that it was He who was going to redeem Israel. Indeed, besides all this, today is the third day since these things happened.
  • “Then some women from our group of his followers were at his tomb early this morning, and they came back with an amazing report.
  • Yes, and certain women of our company, who arrived at the tomb early, astonished us.
  • They said his body was missing, and they had seen angels who told them Jesus is alive!
  • When they did not find His body, they came saying that they had also seen a vision of angels who said He was alive.
  • Some of our men ran out to see, and sure enough, his body was gone, just as the women had said.”
  • And certain of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said; but Him they did not see.”
  • Then Jesus said to them, “You foolish people! You find it so hard to believe all that the prophets wrote in the Scriptures.
  • Then He said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken!
  • Wasn’t it clearly predicted that the Messiah would have to suffer all these things before entering his glory?”
  • Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His glory?”
  • Then Jesus took them through the writings of Moses and all the prophets, explaining from all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.
  • And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He [g]expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.
  • By this time they were nearing Emmaus and the end of their journey. Jesus acted as if he were going on,
  • The Disciples’ Eyes Opened

Then they drew near to the village where they were going, and He [h]indicated that He would have gone farther.
  • but they begged him, “Stay the night with us, since it is getting late.” So he went home with them.
  • But they constrained Him, saying, “Abide with us, for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent.” And He went in to stay with them.
  • As they sat down to eat,d he took the bread and blessed it. Then he broke it and gave it to them.
  • Now it came to pass, as He sat at the table with them, that He took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them.
  • Suddenly, their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And at that moment he disappeared!
  • Then their eyes were opened and they knew Him; and He vanished from their sight.
  • They said to each other, “Didn’t our hearts burn within us as he talked with us on the road and explained the Scriptures to us?”
  • And they said to one another, “Did not our heart burn within us while He talked with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?”
  • And within the hour they were on their way back to Jerusalem. There they found the eleven disciples and the others who had gathered with them,
  • So they rose up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven and those who were with them gathered together,
  • who said, “The Lord has really risen! He appeared to Peter.e
  • saying, “The Lord is risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!”

  • Jesus Appears to the Disciples

Then the two from Emmaus told their story of how Jesus had appeared to them as they were walking along the road, and how they had recognized him as he was breaking the bread.
  • And they told about the things that had happened on the road, and how He was [i]known to them in the breaking of bread.
  • And just as they were telling about it, Jesus himself was suddenly standing there among them. “Peace be with you,” he said.
  • Jesus Appears to His Disciples

Now as they said these things, Jesus Himself stood in the midst of them, and said to them, “Peace to you.”
  • But the whole group was startled and frightened, thinking they were seeing a ghost!
  • But they were terrified and frightened, and supposed they had seen a spirit.
  • “Why are you frightened?” he asked. “Why are your hearts filled with doubt?
  • And He said to them, “Why are you troubled? And why do doubts arise in your hearts?
  • Look at my hands. Look at my feet. You can see that it’s really me. Touch me and make sure that I am not a ghost, because ghosts don’t have bodies, as you see that I do.”
  • Behold My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself. Handle Me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see I have.”
  • As he spoke, he showed them his hands and his feet.
  • [j]When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His feet.
  • Still they stood there in disbelief, filled with joy and wonder. Then he asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?”
  • But while they still did not believe for joy, and marveled, He said to them, “Have you any food here?”
  • They gave him a piece of broiled fish,
  • So they gave Him a piece of a broiled fish [k]and some honeycomb.
  • and he ate it as they watched.
  • And He took it and ate in their presence.
  • Then he said, “When I was with you before, I told you that everything written about me in the law of Moses and the prophets and in the Psalms must be fulfilled.”
  • The Scriptures Opened

Then He said to them, “These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me.”
  • Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures.
  • And He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures.
  • And he said, “Yes, it was written long ago that the Messiah would suffer and die and rise from the dead on the third day.
  • Then He said to them, “Thus it is written, [l]and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day,
  • It was also written that this message would be proclaimed in the authority of his name to all the nations,f beginning in Jerusalem: ‘There is forgiveness of sins for all who repent.’
  • and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
  • You are witnesses of all these things.
  • And you are witnesses of these things.
  • “And now I will send the Holy Spirit, just as my Father promised. But stay here in the city until the Holy Spirit comes and fills you with power from heaven.”
  • Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city [m]of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.”

  • The Ascension

Then Jesus led them to Bethany, and lifting his hands to heaven, he blessed them.
  • The Ascension

And He led them out as far as Bethany, and He lifted up His hands and blessed them.
  • While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up to heaven.
  • Now it came to pass, while He blessed them, that He was parted from them and carried up into heaven.
  • So they worshiped him and then returned to Jerusalem filled with great joy.
  • And they worshiped Him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy,
  • And they spent all of their time in the Temple, praising God.
  • and were continually in the temple [n]praising and blessing God. [o]Amen.
