  • The Temptation of Jesus

Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led around by the Spirit in the wilderness
  • where he was tempted by the devil for forty days. Jesus ate nothing all that time and became very hungry.
  • for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And He ate nothing during those days, and when they had ended, He became hungry.
  • Then the devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become a loaf of bread.”
  • And the devil said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.”
  • But Jesus told him, “No! The Scriptures say, ‘People do not live by bread alone.’b
  • And Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘MAN SHALL NOT LIVE ON BREAD ALONE.’”
  • Then the devil took him up and revealed to him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.
  • And he led Him up and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.
  • “I will give you the glory of these kingdoms and authority over them,” the devil said, “because they are mine to give to anyone I please.
  • And the devil said to Him, “I will give You all this domain and its glory; for it has been handed over to me, and I give it to whomever I wish.
  • I will give it all to you if you will worship me.”
  • “Therefore if You worship before me, it shall all be Yours.”
  • Jesus replied, “The Scriptures say,
‘You must worship the Lord your God
    and serve only him.’c
  • Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘YOU SHALL WORSHIP THE LORD YOUR GOD AND SERVE HIM ONLY.’”
  • Then the devil took him to Jerusalem, to the highest point of the Temple, and said, “If you are the Son of God, jump off!
  • And he led Him to Jerusalem and had Him stand on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here;
  • For the Scriptures say,
‘He will order his angels to protect and guard you.
  • for it is written,
‘HE WILL COMMAND HIS ANGELS CONCERNING YOU TO GUARD YOU,’
  • And they will hold you up with their hands
so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone.’d
  • and,
‘ON their HANDS THEY WILL BEAR YOU UP,
SO THAT YOU WILL NOT STRIKE YOUR FOOT AGAINST A STONE.’”
  • Jesus responded, “The Scriptures also say, ‘You must not test the Lord your God.’e
  • And Jesus answered and said to him, “It is said, ‘YOU SHALL NOT PUT THE LORD YOUR GOD TO THE TEST.’”
  • When the devil had finished tempting Jesus, he left him until the next opportunity came.
  • When the devil had finished every temptation, he left Him until an opportune time.

  • Jesus Rejected at Nazareth

Then Jesus returned to Galilee, filled with the Holy Spirit’s power. Reports about him spread quickly through the whole region.

  • Jesus’ Public Ministry

And Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about Him spread through all the surrounding district.
  • He taught regularly in their synagogues and was praised by everyone.
  • And He began teaching in their synagogues and was praised by all.
  • When he came to the village of Nazareth, his boyhood home, he went as usual to the synagogue on the Sabbath and stood up to read the Scriptures.
  • And He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up; and as was His custom, He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath, and stood up to read.
  • The scroll of Isaiah the prophet was handed to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where this was written:
  • And the book of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him. And He opened the book and found the place where it was written,
  • “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released,
    that the blind will see,
that the oppressed will be set free,
  • “THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD IS UPON ME,
BECAUSE HE ANOINTED ME TO PREACH THE GOSPEL TO THE POOR.
HE HAS SENT ME TO PROCLAIM RELEASE TO THE CAPTIVES,
AND RECOVERY OF SIGHT TO THE BLIND,
TO SET FREE THOSE WHO ARE OPPRESSED,
  • and that the time of the Lord’s favor has come.f
  • TO PROCLAIM THE FAVORABLE YEAR OF THE LORD.”
  • He rolled up the scroll, handed it back to the attendant, and sat down. All eyes in the synagogue looked at him intently.
  • And He closed the book, gave it back to the attendant and sat down; and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on Him.
  • Then he began to speak to them. “The Scripture you’ve just heard has been fulfilled this very day!”
  • And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”
  • Everyone spoke well of him and was amazed by the gracious words that came from his lips. “How can this be?” they asked. “Isn’t this Joseph’s son?”
  • And all were speaking well of Him, and wondering at the gracious words which were falling from His lips; and they were saying, “Is this not Joseph’s son?”
  • Then he said, “You will undoubtedly quote me this proverb: ‘Physician, heal yourself’ — meaning, ‘Do miracles here in your hometown like those you did in Capernaum.’
  • And He said to them, “No doubt you will quote this proverb to Me, ‘Physician, heal yourself! Whatever we heard was done at Capernaum, do here in your hometown as well.’”
  • But I tell you the truth, no prophet is accepted in his own hometown.
  • And He said, “Truly I say to you, no prophet is welcome in his hometown.
  • “Certainly there were many needy widows in Israel in Elijah’s time, when the heavens were closed for three and a half years, and a severe famine devastated the land.
  • “But I say to you in truth, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the sky was shut up for three years and six months, when a great famine came over all the land;
  • Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them. He was sent instead to a foreigner — a widow of Zarephath in the land of Sidon.
  • and yet Elijah was sent to none of them, but only to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow.
  • And many in Israel had leprosy in the time of the prophet Elisha, but the only one healed was Naaman, a Syrian.”
  • “And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet; and none of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian.”
  • When they heard this, the people in the synagogue were furious.
  • And all the people in the synagogue were filled with rage as they heard these things;
  • Jumping up, they mobbed him and forced him to the edge of the hill on which the town was built. They intended to push him over the cliff,
  • and they got up and drove Him out of the city, and led Him to the brow of the hill on which their city had been built, in order to throw Him down the cliff.
  • but he passed right through the crowd and went on his way.
  • But passing through their midst, He went His way.

  • Jesus Casts Out a Demon

Then Jesus went to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and taught there in the synagogue every Sabbath day.
  • And He came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and He was teaching them on the Sabbath;
  • There, too, the people were amazed at his teaching, for he spoke with authority.
  • and they were amazed at His teaching, for His message was with authority.
  • Once when he was in the synagogue, a man possessed by a demon — an evilg spirit — cried out, shouting,
  • In the synagogue there was a man possessed by the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out with a loud voice,
  • “Go away! Why are you interfering with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are — the Holy One of God!”
  • “Let us alone! What business do we have with each other, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are — the Holy One of God!”
  • But Jesus reprimanded him. “Be quiet! Come out of the man,” he ordered. At that, the demon threw the man to the floor as the crowd watched; then it came out of him without hurting him further.
  • But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be quiet and come out of him!” And when the demon had thrown him down in the midst of the people, he came out of him without doing him any harm.
  • Amazed, the people exclaimed, “What authority and power this man’s words possess! Even evil spirits obey him, and they flee at his command!”
  • And amazement came upon them all, and they began talking with one another saying, “What is this message? For with authority and power He commands the unclean spirits and they come out.”
  • The news about Jesus spread through every village in the entire region.
  • And the report about Him was spreading into every locality in the surrounding district.

  • Jesus Heals Many People

After leaving the synagogue that day, Jesus went to Simon’s home, where he found Simon’s mother-in-law very sick with a high fever. “Please heal her,” everyone begged.

  • Many Are Healed

Then He got up and left the synagogue, and entered Simon’s home. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Him to help her.
  • Standing at her bedside, he rebuked the fever, and it left her. And she got up at once and prepared a meal for them.
  • And standing over her, He rebuked the fever, and it left her; and she immediately got up and waited on them.
  • As the sun went down that evening, people throughout the village brought sick family members to Jesus. No matter what their diseases were, the touch of his hand healed every one.
  • While the sun was setting, all those who had any who were sick with various diseases brought them to Him; and laying His hands on each one of them, He was healing them.
  • Many were possessed by demons; and the demons came out at his command, shouting, “You are the Son of God!” But because they knew he was the Messiah, he rebuked them and refused to let them speak.
  • Demons also were coming out of many, shouting, “You are the Son of God!” But rebuking them, He would not allow them to speak, because they knew Him to be the Christ.

  • Jesus Continues to Preach

Early the next morning Jesus went out to an isolated place. The crowds searched everywhere for him, and when they finally found him, they begged him not to leave them.
  • When day came, Jesus left and went to a secluded place; and the crowds were searching for Him, and came to Him and tried to keep Him from going away from them.
  • But he replied, “I must preach the Good News of the Kingdom of God in other towns, too, because that is why I was sent.”
  • But He said to them, “I must preach the kingdom of God to the other cities also, for I was sent for this purpose.”
  • So he continued to travel around, preaching in synagogues throughout Judea.h
  • So He kept on preaching in the synagogues of Judea.
