Darby Bible Translation

  • Peter and John before the Council

    While Peter and John were speaking to the people, they were confronted by the priests, the captain of the Temple guard, and some of the Sadducees.
  • Peter and John Before the Council

    And as they were speaking to the people, the priests and captain of the temple and the Sadducees came upon them,
  • These leaders were very disturbed that Peter and John were teaching the people that through Jesus there is a resurrection of the dead.
  • being distressed on account of their teaching the people and preaching by Jesus the resurrection from among [the] dead;
  • They arrested them and, since it was already evening, put them in jail until morning.
  • and they laid hands on them, and put them in ward till the morrow; for it was already evening.
  • But many of the people who heard their message believed it, so the number of men who believed now totaled about 5,000.
  • But many of those who had heard the word believed; and the number of the men had become [about] five thousand.
  • The next day the council of all the rulers and elders and teachers of religious law met in Jerusalem.
  • And it came to pass on the morrow that their rulers and elders and scribes were gathered together at Jerusalem,
  • Annas the high priest was there, along with Caiaphas, John, Alexander, and other relatives of the high priest.
  • and Annas the high priest, and Caiaphas, and John, and Alexander, and as many as were of [the] high priestly family;
  • They brought in the two disciples and demanded, “By what power, or in whose name, have you done this?”
  • and having placed them in the midst they inquired, In what power or in what name have *ye* done this?
  • Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers and elders of our people,
  • Then Peter, filled with [the] Holy Spirit, said to them, Rulers of the people and elders [of Israel],
  • are we being questioned today because we’ve done a good deed for a crippled man? Do you want to know how he was healed?
  • if *we* this day are called upon to answer as to the good deed [done] to the infirm man, how *he* has been healed,
  • Let me clearly state to all of you and to all the people of Israel that he was healed by the powerful name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene,a the man you crucified but whom God raised from the dead.
  • be it known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that in the name of Jesus Christ the Nazaraean, whom *ye* have crucified, whom God has raised from among [the] dead, by *him* this [man] stands here before you sound [in body].
  • For Jesus is the one referred to in the Scriptures, where it says,
    ‘The stone that you builders rejected
    has now become the cornerstone.’b
  • *He* is the stone which has been set at nought by you the builders, which is become the corner stone.
  • There is salvation in no one else! God has given no other name under heaven by which we must be saved.”
  • And salvation is in none other, for neither is there another name under heaven which is given among men by which we must be saved.
  • The members of the council were amazed when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, for they could see that they were ordinary men with no special training in the Scriptures. They also recognized them as men who had been with Jesus.
  • Peter and John Threatened, Released

    But seeing the boldness of Peter and John, and perceiving that they were unlettered and uninstructed men, they wondered; and they recognised them that they were with Jesus.
  • But since they could see the man who had been healed standing right there among them, there was nothing the council could say.
  • And beholding the man who had been healed standing with them, they had nothing to reply;
  • So they ordered Peter and John out of the council chamberc and conferred among themselves.
  • but having commanded them to go out of the council they conferred with one another,
  • “What should we do with these men?” they asked each other. “We can’t deny that they have performed a miraculous sign, and everybody in Jerusalem knows about it.
  • saying, What shall we do to these men? for that indeed an evident sign has come to pass through their means is manifest to all that inhabit Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it.
  • But to keep them from spreading their propaganda any further, we must warn them not to speak to anyone in Jesus’ name again.”
  • But that it be not further spread among the people, let us threaten them severely no longer to speak to any man in this name.
  • So they called the apostles back in and commanded them never again to speak or teach in the name of Jesus.
  • And having called them, they charged [them] not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus.
  • But Peter and John replied, “Do you think God wants us to obey you rather than him?
  • But Peter and John answering said to them, If it be righteous before God to listen to you rather than to God, judge ye;
  • We cannot stop telling about everything we have seen and heard.”
  • for as for us *we* cannot refrain from speaking of the things which we have seen and heard.
  • The council then threatened them further, but they finally let them go because they didn’t know how to punish them without starting a riot. For everyone was praising God
  • But they, having further threatened them, let them go, finding no way how they might punish them, on account of the people, because all glorified God for what had taken place;
  • for this miraculous sign — the healing of a man who had been lame for more than forty years.
  • for the man on whom this sign of healing had taken place was above forty years old.

  • The Believers Pray for Courage

    As soon as they were freed, Peter and John returned to the other believers and told them what the leading priests and elders had said.
  • The Believers' Prayer for Boldness

    And having been let go, they came to their own [company], and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said to them.
  • When they heard the report, all the believers lifted their voices together in prayer to God: “O Sovereign Lord, Creator of heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them —
  • And they, having heard [it], lifted up [their] voice with one accord to God, and said, Lord, *thou* art the God who made the heaven and the earth and the sea, and all that is in them;
  • you spoke long ago by the Holy Spirit through our ancestor David, your servant, saying,
    ‘Why were the nations so angry?
    Why did they waste their time with futile plans?
  • who hast said by the mouth of thy servant David, Why have [the] nations raged haughtily and [the] peoples meditated vain things?
  • The kings of the earth prepared for battle;
    the rulers gathered together
    against the LORD
    and against his Messiah.’d
  • The kings of the earth were there, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord and against his Christ.
  • “In fact, this has happened here in this very city! For Herod Antipas, Pontius Pilate the governor, the Gentiles, and the people of Israel were all united against Jesus, your holy servant, whom you anointed.
  • For in truth against thy holy servant Jesus, whom thou hadst anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with [the] nations, and peoples of Israel, have been gathered together in this city
  • But everything they did was determined beforehand according to your will.
  • to do whatever thy hand and thy counsel had determined before should come to pass.
  • And now, O Lord, hear their threats, and give us, your servants, great boldness in preaching your word.
  • And now, Lord, look upon their threatenings, and give to thy bondmen with all boldness to speak thy word,
  • Stretch out your hand with healing power; may miraculous signs and wonders be done through the name of your holy servant Jesus.”
  • in that thou stretchest out thy hand to heal, and that signs and wonders take place through the name of thy holy servant Jesus.
  • After this prayer, the meeting place shook, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit. Then they preached the word of God with boldness.
  • And when they had prayed, the place in which they were assembled shook, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and spoke the word of God with boldness.

  • The Believers Share Their Possessions

    All the believers were united in heart and mind. And they felt that what they owned was not their own, so they shared everything they had.
  • Sharing among Believers

    And the heart and soul of the multitude of those that had believed were one, and not one said that anything of what he possessed was his own, but all things were common to them;
  • The apostles testified powerfully to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and God’s great blessing was upon them all.
  • and with great power did the apostles give witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all.
  • There were no needy people among them, because those who owned land or houses would sell them
  • For neither was there any one in want among them; for as many as were owners of lands or houses, selling them, brought the price of what was sold
  • and bring the money to the apostles to give to those in need.
  • and laid it at the feet of the apostles; and distribution was made to each according as any one might have need.
  • For instance, there was Joseph, the one the apostles nicknamed Barnabas (which means “Son of Encouragement”). He was from the tribe of Levi and came from the island of Cyprus.
  • And Joseph, who had been surnamed Barnabas by the apostles (which is, being interpreted, Son of consolation), a Levite, Cyprian by birth,
  • He sold a field he owned and brought the money to the apostles.
  • being possessed of land, having sold [it], brought the money and laid it at the feet of the apostles.
