This is my second letter to you, dear friends, and in both of them I have tried to stimulate your wholesome thinking and refresh your memory.

Das ist schon der zweite Brief, Geliebte, den ich euch schreibe. In beiden will ich eure klare Einsicht wachrufen und euch erinnern:
I want you to remember what the holy prophets said long ago and what our Lord and Savior commanded through your apostles.
Denkt an die Worte, die von den heiligen Propheten im Voraus gesprochen worden sind, und an das Gebot des Herrn und Retters, das eure Apostel euch überliefert haben!
Most importantly, I want to remind you that in the last days scoffers will come, mocking the truth and following their own desires.
Dies sollt ihr vor allem wissen: In den letzten Tagen werden Spötter kommen, die ihren Spott treiben, ihren eigenen Begierden nachgehen
They will say, “What happened to the promise that Jesus is coming again? From before the times of our ancestors, everything has remained the same since the world was first created.”
und sagen: Wo bleibt seine verheißene Ankunft? Denn seit die Väter entschlafen sind, bleibt alles wie von Anfang der Schöpfung an.
They deliberately forget that God made the heavens long ago by the word of his command, and he brought the earth out from the water and surrounded it with water.
Wer das behauptet, übersieht, dass es einst die Himmel gab und eine Erde, die aus dem Wasser entstand und durch das Wasser Bestand hatte auf das Wort Gottes hin.
Then he used the water to destroy the ancient world with a mighty flood.
Durch dieses wurde die damalige Welt vom Wasser überflutet und ging zugrunde.
And by the same word, the present heavens and earth have been stored up for fire. They are being kept for the day of judgment, when ungodly people will be destroyed.
Die jetzigen Himmel aber und die Erde sind durch dasselbe Wort für das Feuer aufgespart worden. Sie werden bewahrt für den Tag des Gerichts und des Verderbens der gottlosen Menschen.
But you must not forget this one thing, dear friends: A day is like a thousand years to the Lord, and a thousand years is like a day.
Dies eine aber, Geliebte, soll euch nicht verborgen bleiben, dass beim Herrn ein Tag wie tausend Jahre und tausend Jahre wie ein Tag sind.
The Lord isn’t really being slow about his promise, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent.
Der Herr der Verheißung zögert nicht, wie einige meinen, die von Verzögerung reden, sondern er ist geduldig mit euch, weil er nicht will, dass jemand zugrunde geht, sondern dass alle zur Umkehr gelangen.
Der Tag des Herrn wird aber kommen wie ein Dieb. Dann werden die Himmel mit Geprassel vergehen, die Elemente sich in Feuer auflösen und die Erde und die Werke auf ihr wird man nicht mehr finden.
Since everything around us is going to be destroyed like this, what holy and godly lives you should live,
Wenn sich das alles in dieser Weise auflöst: Wie heilig und fromm müsst ihr dann leben,
looking forward to the day of God and hurrying it along. On that day, he will set the heavens on fire, and the elements will melt away in the flames.
die Ankunft des Tages Gottes erwarten und beschleunigen! An jenem Tag werden die Himmel in Flammen aufgehen und die Elemente im Feuer zerschmelzen.
But we are looking forward to the new heavens and new earth he has promised, a world filled with God’s righteousness.
Wir erwarten gemäß seiner Verheißung einen neuen Himmel und eine neue Erde, in denen die Gerechtigkeit wohnt.
And so, dear friends, while you are waiting for these things to happen, make every effort to be found living peaceful lives that are pure and blameless in his sight.
Deswegen, Geliebte, die ihr dies erwartet, bemüht euch darum, von ihm ohne Makel und Fehler in Frieden angetroffen zu werden!
And remember, our Lord’s patience gives people time to be saved. This is what our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you with the wisdom God gave him —
Und die Geduld unseres Herrn betrachtet als eure Rettung. Das hat euch auch unser geliebter Bruder Paulus mit der ihm geschenkten Weisheit geschrieben;
speaking of these things in all of his letters. Some of his comments are hard to understand, and those who are ignorant and unstable have twisted his letters to mean something quite different, just as they do with other parts of Scripture. And this will result in their destruction.
es steht in allen seinen Briefen, in denen er davon spricht. In ihnen ist einiges schwer zu verstehen und die Unwissenden, die noch nicht gefestigt sind, werden diese Stellen ebenso verdrehen wie die übrigen Schriften zu ihrem eigenen Verderben.
Peter’s Final Words
You already know these things, dear friends. So be on guard; then you will not be carried away by the errors of these wicked people and lose your own secure footing.
Ihr aber, Geliebte, da ihr dies im Voraus wisst, gebt Acht, dass ihr nicht von dem Irrtum der Frevler mitgerissen werdet und eure eigene Standfestigkeit verliert!
