New Living Translation

Darby Bible Translation

  • Live to Please God

    Finally, dear brothers and sisters,a we urge you in the name of the Lord Jesus to live in a way that pleases God, as we have taught you. You live this way already, and we encourage you to do so even more.
  • Live to Please God

    For the rest, then, brethren, we beg you and exhort you in [the] Lord Jesus, even as ye have received from us how ye ought to walk and please God, even as ye also do walk, that ye would abound still more.
  • For you remember what we taught you by the authority of the Lord Jesus.
  • For ye know what charges we gave you through the Lord Jesus.
  • God’s will is for you to be holy, so stay away from all sexual sin.
  • For this is [the] will of God, [even] your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication;
  • Then each of you will control his own bodyb and live in holiness and honor —
  • that each of you know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honour,
  • not in lustful passion like the pagans who do not know God and his ways.
  • (not in passionate desire, even as the nations who know not God,)
  • Never harm or cheat a fellow believer in this matter by violating his wife,c for the Lord avenges all such sins, as we have solemnly warned you before.
  • not overstepping the rights of and wronging his brother in the matter, because the Lord [is] the avenger of all these things, even as we also told you before, and have fully testified.
  • God has called us to live holy lives, not impure lives.
  • For God has not called us to uncleanness, but in sanctification.
  • Therefore, anyone who refuses to live by these rules is not disobeying human teaching but is rejecting God, who gives his Holy Spirit to you.
  • He therefore that [in this] disregards [his brother], disregards, not man, but God, who has given also his Holy Spirit to you.
  • But we don’t need to write to you about the importance of loving each other,d for God himself has taught you to love one another.
  • Now concerning brotherly love ye have no need that we should write to you, for ye yourselves are taught of God to love one another.
  • Indeed, you already show your love for all the believerse throughout Macedonia. Even so, dear brothers and sisters, we urge you to love them even more.
  • For also ye do this towards all the brethren in the whole of Macedonia; but we exhort you, brethren, to abound still more,
  • Make it your goal to live a quiet life, minding your own business and working with your hands, just as we instructed you before.
  • and to seek earnestly to be quiet and mind your own affairs, and work with your [own] hands, even as we charged you,
  • Then people who are not believers will respect the way you live, and you will not need to depend on others.
  • that ye may walk reputably towards those without, and may have need of no one.

  • The Hope of the Resurrection

    And now, dear brothers and sisters, we want you to know what will happen to the believers who have diedf so you will not grieve like people who have no hope.
  • The Return of the Lord

    But we do not wish you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them that are fallen asleep, to the end that ye be not grieved even as also the rest who have no hope.
  • For since we believe that Jesus died and was raised to life again, we also believe that when Jesus returns, God will bring back with him the believers who have died.
  • For if we believe that Jesus has died and has risen again, so also God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep through Jesus.
  • We tell you this directly from the Lord: We who are still living when the Lord returns will not meet him ahead of those who have died.g
  • (For this we say to you in [the] word of [the] Lord, that *we*, the living, who remain to the coming of the Lord, are in no way to anticipate those who have fallen asleep;
  • For the Lord himself will come down from heaven with a commanding shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet call of God. First, the believers who have diedh will rise from their graves.
  • for the Lord himself, with an assembling shout, with archangel's voice and with trump of God, shall descend from heaven; and the dead in Christ shall rise first;
  • Then, together with them, we who are still alive and remain on the earth will be caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. Then we will be with the Lord forever.
  • then *we*, the living who remain, shall be caught up together with them in [the] clouds, to meet the Lord in [the] air; and thus we shall be always with [the] Lord.
  • So encourage each other with these words.
  • So encourage one another with these words.)
