Ai Defeats the Israelites
But Israel violated the instructions about the things set apart for the LORD.a A man named Achan had stolen some of these dedicated things, so the LORD was very angry with the Israelites. Achan was the son of Carmi, a descendant of Zimrib son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah.

Die Israeliten aber veruntreuten etwas von dem, was als Banngut geweiht war. Denn Achan, der Sohn Karmis, des Sohnes Sabdis, des Sohnes Serachs, vom Stamm Juda, nahm etwas von dem Banngut. Da entbrannte der Zorn des HERRN über die Israeliten.
Joshua sent some of his men from Jericho to spy out the town of Ai, east of Bethel, near Beth-aven.
Josua schickte von Jericho aus einige Männer nach Ai, das bei Bet-Awen, östlich von Bet-El liegt, und sagte zu ihnen: Geht hinauf und erkundet das Land! Die Männer gingen hinauf und erkundeten Ai.
When they returned, they told Joshua, “There’s no need for all of us to go up there; it won’t take more than two or three thousand men to attack Ai. Since there are so few of them, don’t make all our people struggle to go up there.”

Die Männer von Ai erschlugen etwa sechsunddreißig Mann; und sie verfolgten sie vom Stadttor bis zu den Steinbrüchen und schlugen sie an der Steige. Da zerschmolz das Herz des Volkes und wurde zu Wasser.
Joshua and the elders of Israel tore their clothing in dismay, threw dust on their heads, and bowed face down to the ground before the Ark of the LORD until evening.

Then Joshua cried out, “Oh, Sovereign LORD, why did you bring us across the Jordan River if you are going to let the Amorites kill us? If only we had been content to stay on the other side!

Lord, what can I say now that Israel has fled from its enemies?
Ach Herr, was soll ich sagen, nachdem Israel seinen Feinden den Rücken gezeigt hat?
For when the Canaanites and all the other people living in the land hear about it, they will surround us and wipe our name off the face of the earth. And then what will happen to the honor of your great name?”
Das werden die Kanaaniter und alle Bewohner des Landes hören und sie werden uns umzingeln und unseren Namen aus dem ganzen Land ausmerzen. Was willst du dann für deinen großen Namen tun?
But the LORD said to Joshua, “Get up! Why are you lying on your face like this?
Da sagte der HERR zu Josua: Steh auf! Warum fällst du auf dein Angesicht?
Israel has sinned and broken my covenant! They have stolen some of the things that I commanded must be set apart for me. And they have not only stolen them but have lied about it and hidden the things among their own belongings.
Israel hat gesündigt. Sogar meinen Bund, den ich ihnen geboten habe, haben sie übertreten. Weggenommen haben sie vom Banngut, gestohlen haben sie es, unterschlagen und zu ihren eigenen Sachen gelegt.
That is why the Israelites are running from their enemies in defeat. For now Israel itself has been set apart for destruction. I will not remain with you any longer unless you destroy the things among you that were set apart for destruction.
Deshalb können die Israeliten ihren Feinden nicht mehr standhalten und müssen ihren Feinden den Rücken zeigen; denn sie sind dem Bann verfallen. Ich werde nicht mehr mit euch sein, wenn ihr das Banngut nicht aus eurer Mitte beseitigt.
“Get up! Command the people to purify themselves in preparation for tomorrow. For this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: Hidden among you, O Israel, are things set apart for the LORD. You will never defeat your enemies until you remove these things from among you.
Auf! Heilige das Volk und sag: Heiligt euch für morgen! Denn so hat der HERR, der Gott Israels, gesprochen: Banngut ist in deiner Mitte, Israel. Du kannst deinen Feinden nicht standhalten, solange ihr das Banngut nicht aus eurer Mitte entfernt habt.
“In the morning you must present yourselves by tribes, and the LORD will point out the tribe to which the guilty man belongs. That tribe must come forward with its clans, and the LORD will point out the guilty clan. That clan will then come forward, and the LORD will point out the guilty family. Finally, each member of the guilty family must come forward one by one.
Morgen sollt ihr Stamm für Stamm antreten und der Stamm, den der HERR bezeichnet, soll Sippe für Sippe antreten und die Sippe, die der HERR dann bezeichnet, soll Großfamilie für Großfamilie antreten und die Großfamilie, die der HERR dann bezeichnet, soll Mann für Mann antreten.
The one who has stolen what was set apart for destruction will himself be burned with fire, along with everything he has, for he has broken the covenant of the LORD and has done a horrible thing in Israel.”
Wer mit dem Banngut aufgegriffen wird, der soll mit allem, was er hat, verbrannt werden, weil er den Bund des HERRN übertreten und in Israel eine Schandtat verübt hat.
Achan’s Sin
Early the next morning Joshua brought the tribes of Israel before the LORD, and the tribe of Judah was singled out.
Josua ließ früh am Morgen Israel Stamm für Stamm antreten; da wurde der Stamm Juda bezeichnet.
Then the clans of Judah came forward, and the clan of Zerah was singled out. Then the families of Zerah came forward, and the family of Zimri was singled out.
Dann ließ er die Sippen Judas antreten; da wurde die Sippe der Serachiter bezeichnet. Dann ließ er die Sippe der Serachiter nach Großfamilien antreten; da wurde Sabdi bezeichnet.
Every member of Zimri’s family was brought forward person by person, and Achan was singled out.
Dann ließ er dessen Familie Mann für Mann antreten; da wurde Achan, der Sohn Karmis, der Enkel Sabdis, des Sohnes Serachs, vom Stamm Juda bezeichnet.
Then Joshua said to Achan, “My son, give glory to the LORD, the God of Israel, by telling the truth. Make your confession and tell me what you have done. Don’t hide it from me.”
Josua sagte zu Achan: Mein Sohn, gib dem HERRN, dem Gott Israels, die Ehre und leg vor ihm ein Geständnis ab! Sag mir offen, was du getan hast, und verheimliche mir nichts!
Achan replied, “It is true! I have sinned against the LORD, the God of Israel.
Achan antwortete Josua: Es ist wahr, ich habe mich gegen den HERRN, den Gott Israels, versündigt. Das ist es, was ich getan habe:
Ich sah unter der Beute einen schönen Mantel aus Schinar, außerdem zweihundert Schekel Silber und einen Goldbarren, der fünfzig Schekel wog. Ich wollte es haben und nahm es an mich. Es ist in meinem Zelt im Boden vergraben, das Silber an unterster Stelle.
So Joshua sent some men to make a search. They ran to the tent and found the stolen goods hidden there, just as Achan had said, with the silver buried beneath the rest.
Josua schickte Boten und sie liefen zum Zelt, und wirklich: Die Sachen waren im Zelt Achans vergraben, das Silber an unterster Stelle.
They took the things from the tent and brought them to Joshua and all the Israelites. Then they laid them on the ground in the presence of the LORD.
Sie holten alles aus dem Zelt heraus, brachten es zu Josua und allen Israeliten und breiteten es vor dem HERRN aus.
Then Joshua and all the Israelites took Achan, the silver, the robe, the bar of gold, his sons, daughters, cattle, donkeys, sheep, goats, tent, and everything he had, and they brought them to the valley of Achor.
Da nahm Josua Achan, den Sohn Serachs, ebenso das Silber und den Mantel und den Goldbarren, seine Söhne und Töchter, sein Rind, seinen Esel und sein Schaf und seine Ziege, sein Zelt und seine ganze Habe. Er und ganz Israel brachten alles ins Tal Achor.
Then Joshua said to Achan, “Why have you brought trouble on us? The LORD will now bring trouble on you.” And all the Israelites stoned Achan and his family and burned their bodies.
Dann sagte Josua: Womit du uns ins Unglück gestürzt hast, damit stürzt dich der HERR heute ins Unglück. Und ganz Israel steinigte ihn. Sie verbrannten sie im Feuer und steinigten sie.
Man errichtete über ihm einen großen Steinhaufen, der bis zum heutigen Tag zu sehen ist, und der HERR ließ ab von seinem glühenden Zorn. Deshalb nennt man diesen Ort bis heute Tal Achor.
