The Fall of Babylon

After all this I saw another angel come down from heaven with great authority, and the earth grew bright with his splendor.

1

После этого я увидел еще одного ангела, сходящего с небес и обладающего великой властью; вся земля была озарена его славой.

He gave a mighty shout:
“Babylon is fallen — that great city is fallen!
She has become a home for demons.
She is a hideout for every foula spirit,
a hideout for every foul vulture
and every foul and dreadful animal.b

Он произнес могучим голосом:

— Пала, пала великая блудница Вавилон120
и стала жилищем демонов,
пристанищем для всякого нечистого духа
и всякой нечистой и мерзкой птицы.121
Все народы пили
доводящее до безумия вино ее разврата.

For all the nations have fallenc
because of the wine of her passionate immorality.
The kings of the world
have committed adultery with her.
Because of her desires for extravagant luxury,
the merchants of the world have grown rich.”

Цари земли развратничали с ней,
и купцы земли нажились на ее необузданной тяге к роскоши.

Then I heard another voice calling from heaven,
“Come away from her, my people.
Do not take part in her sins,
or you will be punished with her.

Затем я услышал с небес еще один голос. Он сказал:

— Выйди из нее, народ Мой,
чтобы тебе не участвовать в ее грехах
и не подвергнуться ее наказанию,

For her sins are piled as high as heaven,
and God remembers her evil deeds.

потому что ее грехи поднялись уже до небес,122
и Бог помнит ее преступления.

Do to her as she has done to others.
Double her penaltyd for all her evil deeds.
She brewed a cup of terror for others,
so brew twice as muche for her.

Сделайте ей то же, что она сделала другим,
и отплатите ей вдвойне за ее дела.
В той самой чаше, в которой она замешивала свое вино,
замешайте ей напиток двойной крепости.

She glorified herself and lived in luxury,
so match it now with torment and sorrow.
She boasted in her heart,
‘I am queen on my throne.
I am no helpless widow,
and I have no reason to mourn.’

Доставьте ей столько горя и страданий,
сколько она позволяла себе славы и роскоши,
потому что она хвалится в своем сердце:
«Я не какая-нибудь вдова! Я сижу как царица!
Я никогда не буду скорбеть!»

Therefore, these plagues will overtake her in a single day —
death and mourning and famine.
She will be completely consumed by fire,
for the Lord God who judges her is mighty.”

И поэтому настанет день, когда ее постигнут горести:
смерть, скорбь и голод.
Она будет сожжена огнем,
потому что могуч Господь Бог, осудивший ее.123

And the kings of the world who committed adultery with her and enjoyed her great luxury will mourn for her as they see the smoke rising from her charred remains.

Когда цари земли, которые развратничали с ней и наслаждались ее роскошью, увидят дым от ее пожарища, они будут рыдать по ней и бить себя в грудь.124

They will stand at a distance, terrified by her great torment. They will cry out,
“How terrible, how terrible for you,
O Babylon, you great city!
In a single moment
God’s judgment came on you.”

Стоя вдали в ужасе от ее мучений, они будут говорить:

— Горе! Горе! О великий город!
О Вавилон, могучий город!
В один час свершился над тобой суд!

The merchants of the world will weep and mourn for her, for there is no one left to buy their goods.

Купцы земли плачут и скорбят по ней, потому что никто уже не покупает их товаров:

She bought great quantities of gold, silver, jewels, and pearls; fine linen, purple, silk, and scarlet cloth; things made of fragrant thyine wood, ivory goods, and objects made of expensive wood; and bronze, iron, and marble.

товаров из золота, серебра, драгоценных камней и жемчуга; тончайших льняных тканей, пурпура, шелка и алых материй; ароматической древесины; изделий из слоновой кости, ценной древесины, бронзы, железа и мрамора;

She also bought cinnamon, spice, incense, myrrh, frankincense, wine, olive oil, fine flour, wheat, cattle, sheep, horses, wagons, and bodies — that is, human slaves.

корицы, пряностей, благовоний, ароматического масла и ладана,125 вина, оливкового масла, отборной муки и пшеницы, крупного скота и овец, коней и колесниц, тел и душ человеческих.126

“The fancy things you loved so much
are gone,” they cry.
“All your luxuries and splendor
are gone forever,
never to be yours again.”

Они будут говорить:
— Плодов, которых желала душа твоя, уже нет у тебя. Все твои богатства и слава покинули тебя, и уже никогда не вернутся.

15

The merchants who became wealthy by selling her these things will stand at a distance, terrified by her great torment. They will weep and cry out,

Торговавшие этими товарами купцы, нажившиеся на ней, будут стоять в стороне, перепуганные ее бедствиями. Они будут плакать и скорбеть,

16

“How terrible, how terrible for that great city!
She was clothed in finest purple and scarlet linens,
decked out with gold and precious stones and pearls!

говоря:

— Горе, горе, столица великая,
одетая в тончайшую льняную одежду, в пурпурное и алое,
украшенная золотом, драгоценными камнями и жемчугом!

17

In a single moment
all the wealth of the city is gone!”
And all the captains of the merchant ships and their passengers and sailors and crews will stand at a distance.

В один час было уничтожено такое огромное богатство!

Все капитаны кораблей, все их пассажиры и моряки, и все, чей промысел связан с мореплаванием, будут издали наблюдать

They will cry out as they watch the smoke ascend, and they will say, “Where is there another city as great as this?”

18

и, когда увидят дым, поднимающийся от нее, зарыдают:
— Разве был еще когда-либо город, подобный этому великому городу?127

And they will weep and throw dust on their heads to show their grief. And they will cry out,
“How terrible, how terrible for that great city!
The shipowners became wealthy
by transporting her great wealth on the seas.
In a single moment it is all gone.”

Они посыпали свои головы пылью128 и со слезами и скорбью причитали:

— Горе, горе, столица великая,
обогатившая всех судовладельцев своим богатством!
В один час она была уничтожена!

20

Rejoice over her fate, O heaven
and people of God and apostles and prophets!
For at last God has judged her
for your sakes.

Радуйтесь об этом, небеса!
Радуйтесь, святые, апостолы и пророки,
потому что Бог осудил ее за то, как она поступала с вами.

21

Then a mighty angel picked up a boulder the size of a huge millstone. He threw it into the ocean and shouted,
“Just like this, the great city Babylon
will be thrown down with violence
and will never be found again.

— Так будет брошена и великая столица Вавилон,
и никто уже ее не найдет.

22

The sound of harps, singers, flutes, and trumpets
will never be heard in you again.
No craftsmen and no trades
will ever be found in you again.
The sound of the mill
will never be heard in you again.

Никогда уже в тебе не будет слышно
голоса певцов, музыки арфистов, флейтистов и трубачей,
никогда уже в тебе не отыщутся
ремесленники, каким бы ремеслом они ни занимались,
никогда уже не будет слышно в тебе
шума мельничных жерновов.

The light of a lamp
will never shine in you again.
The happy voices of brides and grooms
will never be heard in you again.
For your merchants were the greatest in the world,
and you deceived the nations with your sorceries.

Никогда уже не будет гореть в тебе свет светильника,
не будет слышно голосов жениха и невесты.
Твои купцы были господами на земле,
и все народы были обмануты твоим колдовством.

24

In yourf streets flowed the blood of the prophets and of God’s holy people
and the blood of people slaughtered all over the world.”

Но в этом городе пролилась кровь пророков,
святых и всех убитых на земле.
