Saul war 30 Jahre alt, als er König wurde. Nachdem er zwei Jahre lang über Israel regiert hatte,
Saul selected 3,000 special troops from the army of Israel and sent the rest of the men home. He took 2,000 of the chosen men with him to Micmash and the hill country of Bethel. The other 1,000 went with Saul’s son Jonathan to Gibeah in the land of Benjamin.

Soon after this, Jonathan attacked and defeated the garrison of Philistines at Geba. The news spread quickly among the Philistines. So Saul blew the ram’s horn throughout the land, saying, “Hebrews, hear this! Rise up in revolt!”
Eines Tages überfiel Jonatan die Wachposten der Philister in Geba und tötete sie. Rasch verbreitete sich diese Nachricht bei den Philistern. Auch Saul schickte Boten durch ganz Israel. Sie sollten die Hörner blasen und überall die Heldentat Jonatans verkünden.
All Israel heard the news that Saul had destroyed the Philistine garrison at Geba and that the Philistines now hated the Israelites more than ever. So the entire Israelite army was summoned to join Saul at Gilgal.

The men of Israel saw what a tight spot they were in; and because they were hard pressed by the enemy, they tried to hide in caves, thickets, rocks, holes, and cisterns.

Saul waited there seven days for Samuel, as Samuel had instructed him earlier, but Samuel still didn’t come. Saul realized that his troops were rapidly slipping away.

Doch Samuel stellte ihn sofort zur Rede: »Was hast du getan?« Saul versuchte sich zu rechtfertigen: »Die Soldaten begannen schon davonzulaufen, weil du nicht pünktlich zur abgemachten Zeit hier warst. Die Philister haben sich in Michmas zum Kampf aufgestellt,
So I said, ‘The Philistines are ready to march against us at Gilgal, and I haven’t even asked for the LORD’s help!’ So I felt compelled to offer the burnt offering myself before you came.”
und ich musste befürchten, dass sie uns jeden Moment in Gilgal angreifen. Ich wollte aber auf jeden Fall vorher noch den HERRN um seine Hilfe bitten. Deshalb habe ich es gewagt, selbst das Brandopfer darzubringen.«
“How foolish!” Samuel exclaimed. “You have not kept the command the LORD your God gave you. Had you kept it, the LORD would have established your kingdom over Israel forever.
»Das war sehr dumm von dir!«, erwiderte Samuel. »Du hast dem Befehl des HERRN, deines Gottes, nicht gehorcht. Er wollte dir und deinen Nachkommen für alle Zeiten die Königsherrschaft über Israel geben.
But now your kingdom must end, for the LORD has sought out a man after his own heart. The LORD has already appointed him to be the leader of his people, because you have not kept the LORD’s command.”
Du aber hast sie durch dein voreiliges Handeln verspielt. Der HERR hat schon einen Nachfolger ausgesucht und ihn dazu bestimmt, das Volk zu regieren. Es ist ein Mann, der ihm Freude macht. Du aber hast dem Befehl des HERRN nicht gehorcht.«
Dann verließ Samuel Gilgal. Die zurückgebliebenen Israeliten zogen hinter Saul her dem Feind entgegen. Sie kamen von Gilgal nach Gibea. Dort musterte Saul das restliche Heer: Es waren gerade einmal 600 Mann.

There were no blacksmiths in the land of Israel in those days. The Philistines wouldn’t allow them for fear they would make swords and spears for the Hebrews.
Damals gab es im ganzen Land Israel keinen einzigen Schmied. Die Philister wollten nämlich verhindern, dass sich die Israeliten Schwerter und Speere herstellten.
Wenn nun ein israelitischer Bauer seine Pflugschar, einen Spaten, eine Axt oder eine Hacke schärfen lassen wollte, musste er die Werkzeuge zu einem Schmied der Philister bringen.
Das Schärfen von Pflugscharen, Spaten, Gabeln und Äxten kostete zwei Drittel eines Silberstücks, ebenso das Einsetzen eines Ochsenstachels.
So on the day of the battle none of the people of Israel had a sword or spear, except for Saul and Jonathan.
Daher gab es in jenen Tagen in Sauls ganzem Heer keine Schwerter und Speere außer den Waffen, die ihm selbst und seinem Sohn Jonatan gehörten.
