Samuel Anoints David as King
Now the LORD said to Samuel, “You have mourned long enough for Saul. I have rejected him as king of Israel, so fill your flask with olive oil and go to Bethlehem. Find a man named Jesse who lives there, for I have selected one of his sons to be my king.”

But Samuel asked, “How can I do that? If Saul hears about it, he will kill me.”
“Take a heifer with you,” the LORD replied, “and say that you have come to make a sacrifice to the LORD.

Doch Samuel wandte ein: »Wie kann ich dorthin gehen und so etwas tun? Saul bringt mich um, wenn er davon erfährt!« Da antwortete der HERR: »Nimm eine junge Kuh mit und sag, du seist zum Opfern gekommen.
Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you which of his sons to anoint for me.”
Lade Isai zu dem Opferfest ein. Was du weiter tun sollst, lasse ich dich rechtzeitig wissen. Ich werde dir genau zeigen, welchen Sohn du zum König salben sollst.«
So Samuel did as the LORD instructed. When he arrived at Bethlehem, the elders of the town came trembling to meet him. “What’s wrong?” they asked. “Do you come in peace?”
Samuel gehorchte dem Befehl des HERRN. Seine Ankunft in Bethlehem erregte Aufsehen. Erschrocken kamen die führenden Männer ihm entgegen und fragten: »Dein Besuch bedeutet doch hoffentlich nichts Schlimmes?«
“Yes,” Samuel replied. “I have come to sacrifice to the LORD. Purify yourselves and come with me to the sacrifice.” Then Samuel performed the purification rite for Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice, too.
»Nein, nein«, beruhigte er sie, »es ist alles in Ordnung. Ich bin gekommen, um dem HERRN ein Opfer darzubringen. Reinigt euch, so wie es vorgeschrieben ist, und kommt dann mit mir zum Opferfest.« Isai und seine Söhne lud Samuel persönlich ein und weihte sie für das bevorstehende Opfer.
When they arrived, Samuel took one look at Eliab and thought, “Surely this is the LORD’s anointed!”
Als Isai und seine Söhne eintrafen, fiel Samuels Blick sofort auf Eliab, und er dachte: »Das ist bestimmt der, den der HERR als König auserwählt hat.«
But the LORD said to Samuel, “Don’t judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him. The LORD doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”
Doch der HERR sagte zu ihm: »Lass dich von seinem Aussehen und von seiner Größe nicht beeindrucken. Er ist es nicht. Denn ich urteile nach anderen Maßstäben als die Menschen. Für die Menschen ist wichtig, was sie mit den Augen wahrnehmen können; ich dagegen schaue jedem Menschen ins Herz.«
Then Jesse told his son Abinadab to step forward and walk in front of Samuel. But Samuel said, “This is not the one the LORD has chosen.”
Danach rief Isai seinen Sohn Abinadab und stellte ihn Samuel vor. Doch der Prophet musste sagen: »Auch diesen hat der HERR nicht ausgewählt.«
Als Nächstes ließ Isai Schamma vortreten, und wieder sagte Samuel: »Auch ihn hat der HERR nicht erwählt.«
In the same way all seven of Jesse’s sons were presented to Samuel. But Samuel said to Jesse, “The LORD has not chosen any of these.”
Und so ließ Isai seine sieben Söhne an Samuel vorbeigehen. Zuletzt sagte Samuel zu Isai: »Der HERR hat keinen von ihnen auserwählt.
Then Samuel asked, “Are these all the sons you have?”
“There is still the youngest,” Jesse replied. “But he’s out in the fields watching the sheep and goats.”
“Send for him at once,” Samuel said. “We will not sit down to eat until he arrives.”

So Jesse sent for him. He was dark and handsome, with beautiful eyes.
And the LORD said, “This is the one; anoint him.”
And the LORD said, “This is the one; anoint him.”
So ließ Isai David holen. Er war ein gut aussehender junger Mann, mit rötlichen Haaren und schönen Augen. »Das ist er«, sagte der HERR zu Samuel, »salbe ihn!«
So as David stood there among his brothers, Samuel took the flask of olive oil he had brought and anointed David with the oil. And the Spirit of the LORD came powerfully upon David from that day on. Then Samuel returned to Ramah.
Da nahm Samuel das Horn mit dem Öl und goss es vor den Augen seiner Brüder über Davids Kopf aus. Sogleich kam der Geist des HERRN über David und verließ ihn von da an nicht mehr. Samuel kehrte wieder nach Rama zurück.
Der Geist des HERRN hatte Saul verlassen. Stattdessen schickte Gott einen bösen Geist, der den König immer wieder überfiel und ihm Furcht und Schrecken einjagte.
Some of Saul’s servants said to him, “A tormenting spirit from God is troubling you.
Eines Tages kamen einige Diener Sauls mit einem Vorschlag zu ihm: »Du weißt selbst, dass ein böser Geist, den Gott geschickt hat, dich quält«, sagten sie.
Let us find a good musician to play the harp whenever the tormenting spirit troubles you. He will play soothing music, and you will soon be well again.”
»Lass uns jemanden suchen, der gut auf der Laute spielen kann! Jedes Mal wenn dieser böse Geist dich überfällt, wird der Mann seine Laute zur Hand nehmen und dir etwas vorspielen. Das wird dich beruhigen und aufmuntern. Du brauchst nur zu befehlen, dann handeln wir.«
“All right,” Saul said. “Find me someone who plays well, and bring him here.”
»Ja«, antwortete Saul. »Sucht mir einen guten Lautenspieler und holt ihn an den Hof.«
One of the servants said to Saul, “One of Jesse’s sons from Bethlehem is a talented harp player. Not only that — he is a brave warrior, a man of war, and has good judgment. He is also a fine-looking young man, and the LORD is with him.”
Einer der Männer sagte: »Ich denke da an einen jungen Mann, den ich einmal gesehen habe, einen Sohn von Isai aus Bethlehem. Er ist nicht nur ein ausgezeichneter Musiker, sondern auch mutig und kampferprobt. Er findet in jeder Situation das treffende Wort und sieht gut aus. Der HERR steht ihm bei.«
So Saul sent messengers to Jesse to say, “Send me your son David, the shepherd.”
Sofort sandte Saul Boten zu Isai und ließ ihm ausrichten: »Schick deinen Sohn David, den Schafhirten, zu mir an den Königshof!«
Jesse responded by sending David to Saul, along with a young goat, a donkey loaded with bread, and a wineskin full of wine.
Da schickte Isai seinen Sohn zu Saul und gab ihm Geschenke für den König mit: einen Esel, beladen mit Broten, einen Schlauch Wein und einen jungen Ziegenbock.
So David went to Saul and began serving him. Saul loved David very much, and David became his armor bearer.
So kam David an Sauls Hof. Der König mochte ihn bald sehr gern und machte ihn zu seinem Waffenträger.
Then Saul sent word to Jesse asking, “Please let David remain in my service, for I am very pleased with him.”
Darum bat er Isai: »Lass doch David endgültig in meinen Dienst treten, denn ich hätte ihn sehr gerne bei mir am Königshof!«
And whenever the tormenting spirit from God troubled Saul, David would play the harp. Then Saul would feel better, and the tormenting spirit would go away.
Immer wenn der böse Geist über Saul herfiel, griff David zur Laute und begann zu spielen. Und immer wieder brachte die Musik Saul Erleichterung. Er fühlte sich besser, und der böse Geist ließ ihn in Ruhe.
