So the men of Kiriath-jearim came to get the Ark of the LORD. They took it to the hillside home of Abinadab and ordained Eleazar, his son, to be in charge of it.
Da kamen die Männer von Kirjat-Jearim nach Bet-Schemesch und holten die Bundeslade. Sie stellten sie im Haus von Abinadab auf, das auf einem Hügel stand. Seinen Sohn Eleasar beauftragten sie, die Bundeslade zu bewachen. Sie weihten ihn feierlich für diesen besonderen Dienst.
The Ark remained in Kiriath-jearim for a long time — twenty years in all. During that time all Israel mourned because it seemed the LORD had abandoned them.
Zwanzig Jahre waren vergangen, seit die Bundeslade nach Kirjat-Jearim gebracht worden war. In dieser Zeit litten die Israeliten große Not und schrien zu Gott um Hilfe.
Samuel Leads Israel to Victory
Then Samuel said to all the people of Israel, “If you want to return to the LORD with all your hearts, get rid of your foreign gods and your images of Ashtoreth. Turn your hearts to the LORD and obey him alone; then he will rescue you from the Philistines.”
Da sagte Samuel zum Volk: »Wenn ihr euch wirklich von ganzem Herzen wieder dem HERRN zuwenden wollt, dann werft erst einmal die anderen Götter und Göttinnen weg. Richtet euer ganzes Leben nach dem HERRN aus und gehorcht ihm allein, so wird er euch von der Herrschaft der Philister befreien.«
So the Israelites got rid of their images of Baal and Ashtoreth and worshiped only the LORD.
Da warfen die Israeliten ihre Götterfiguren von Baal und Astarte weg und verehrten nur noch den HERRN.
Then Samuel told them, “Gather all of Israel to Mizpah, and I will pray to the LORD for you.”
Danach rief Samuel alle Israeliten nach Mizpa zu einer Volksversammlung zusammen und kündigte an: »Dort will ich für euch zum HERRN um Hilfe beten.«
So they gathered at Mizpah and, in a great ceremony, drew water from a well and poured it out before the LORD. They also went without food all day and confessed that they had sinned against the LORD. (It was at Mizpah that Samuel became Israel’s judge.)
Da kamen sie alle in Mizpa zusammen. Als Zeichen ihrer Reue schöpften sie Wasser aus einem Brunnen und schütteten es vor dem HERRN aus. Auch fasteten sie den ganzen Tag und bekannten: »Wir haben mit unserem Götzendienst gegen den HERRN gesündigt.« Dort in Mizpa stand Samuel den Israeliten als Richter vor.
When the Philistine rulers heard that Israel had gathered at Mizpah, they mobilized their army and advanced. The Israelites were badly frightened when they learned that the Philistines were approaching.
Die Philister erfuhren, dass sich die Israeliten in Mizpa versammelt hatten. Ihre fünf Fürsten riefen schnell das ganze Heer zusammen und rückten gegen Israel aus. Als die Israeliten in Mizpa davon hörten, packte sie die Angst.
“Don’t stop pleading with the LORD our God to save us from the Philistines!” they begged Samuel.
»Bete doch, Samuel!«, baten sie eindringlich. »Hör nicht auf, den HERRN, unseren Gott, anzuflehen und ihn zu bitten, dass er uns vor den Philistern rettet!«
So Samuel took a young lamb and offered it to the LORD as a whole burnt offering. He pleaded with the LORD to help Israel, and the LORD answered him.
Da nahm Samuel ein Lamm und verbrannte es vollständig als Opfer für den HERRN. Dabei rief er zu ihm um Hilfe für Israel, und der HERR erhörte sein Gebet.
Just as Samuel was sacrificing the burnt offering, the Philistines arrived to attack Israel. But the LORD spoke with a mighty voice of thunder from heaven that day, and the Philistines were thrown into such confusion that the Israelites defeated them.
Während Samuel das Opfer darbrachte, waren die Philister schon nahe an Israel herangerückt und wollten den Kampf beginnen. Doch plötzlich versetzte der HERR die Philister mit einem lauten Donner in Angst und Schrecken. Und so schlugen die Israeliten sie in die Flucht
The men of Israel chased them from Mizpah to a place below Beth-car, slaughtering them all along the way.
und verfolgten sie von Mizpa bis hinter Bet-Kar. Die Philister erlitten eine große Niederlage.
Nach diesem Sieg stellte Samuel zwischen Mizpa und Schen einen großen Stein als Denkmal auf. »Bis hierher hat der HERR geholfen!«, sagte er und nannte den Stein Eben-Eser (»Stein der Hilfe«).
So the Philistines were subdued and didn’t invade Israel again for some time. And throughout Samuel’s lifetime, the LORD’s powerful hand was raised against the Philistines.
Nachdem die Philister so gedemütigt worden waren, fielen sie nicht mehr ins Gebiet der Israeliten ein. Der HERR hielt sie davon ab, solange Samuel lebte.
The Israelite villages near Ekron and Gath that the Philistines had captured were restored to Israel, along with the rest of the territory that the Philistines had taken. And there was peace between Israel and the Amorites in those days.
Die Israeliten eroberten alle Städte zurück, die die Philister ihnen abgenommen hatten, von Ekron bis Gat samt den umliegenden Gebieten. Auch mit den Amoritern lebte Israel zu dieser Zeit in Frieden.
Samuel continued as Israel’s judge for the rest of his life.
Samuel war sein ganzes Leben lang Israels Führer und Richter.
Each year he traveled around, setting up his court first at Bethel, then at Gilgal, and then at Mizpah. He judged the people of Israel at each of these places.
Jedes Jahr besuchte er der Reihe nach die Orte Bethel, Gilgal und Mizpa und kümmerte sich dort um die Angelegenheiten der Israeliten.
Then he would return to his home at Ramah, and he would hear cases there, too. And Samuel built an altar to the LORD at Ramah.
Dann kehrte er wieder in seine Heimatstadt Rama zurück, von wo aus er sonst sein Richteramt ausübte. Dort hatte er auch einen Altar gebaut, um dem HERRN Opfer darzubringen.
